Book excerpt: Equestrian trail riding as an American cultural heritage is rarely articulated by either equestrians or managers of lands in which horse trails are embedded. Protection of our natural and cultural heritages are legislatively mandated. One value of securing these heritages is remembrance of where we came from and how we got here. We came from the wilderness. Most of our journey into our cyberspace world was supported by horses. The mounted trail rider in a rural or wildlands setting is iconic Americana. But does the trail rider know it and behave in an appropriate manner? I have come to fear that our cultural heritage is at high risk. Riders commonly take their access to the public lands for granted. Managers of the public lands often view recreational horse use as an obstacle to natural resource protection mandates. As a professional ecologist and my last 40 years with trail horses and horse trails at the center of my being, I offer glimpses of my experiences and suggestions for preserving a cultural heritage in a natural heritage setting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authoritative guide to understanding and managing the ecological impacts of recreational activities in wildlands This third edition provides an updated and thorough examination of the ecological impacts of recreational use on wildlands and the best management practices to employ in places where recreation and preservation of natural conditions are both important - and often conflicting - objectives. Covering the latest research, this edition provides detailed information about the environmental changes that result from recreational use. It describes spatial patterns of impact and trends over time, then explores the factors that determine magnitude of impact, including amount of use, type and behavior of use, and environmental durability. Numerous examples, drawn from parks and recreation areas around the world, give readers insight into why certain areas are more heavily damaged than others, and demonstrate the techniques available to mitigate damage. The book incorporates both the first-hand experience of the authors and an exhaustive review of the world’s literature on the subject. Boxes provide quick access to important material, and further resources are referenced in an extensive bibliography. Essential reading for all park and protected area management professionals, this book is also a useful textbook for upper division undergraduate and graduate students on recreation ecology and recreation management courses.

The purpose of the work is to facilitate communication between professionals, not to provide them with exhaustive vocabularies of each other's specialties. Definitions are drawn from many sources, including public laws and government manuals, but are not intended to establish legally binding definitions. A list of terms and list of sources are included. Book excerpt: The growing demand for recreation at the wildland-urban interface throughout the United States poses new challenges for natural resource managers. To enable resource managers and researchers to exchange information and ideas, the first Symposium on Social Aspects and Recreation Research was held. The format of the symposium offered various opportunities for interactive communication among attendees. The proceedings contain a keynote address, abbreviated versions of 27 oral presentations, and summaries of sessions covering poster presentations, simulated field trips, and round table discussions. Issues addressed include these: access, land stewardship and ethics, cultural diversity of recreationists, service delivery strategies, agency-visitor interaction, conflict, partnerships, and data collection techniques.
