Book excerpt: Transcending alcohol doesn't have to be a gut-wrenching cycle of relapse and redemption, contrary to what Big Rehab would like you to believe. This book is the shortcut to filling in the missing pieces of your alcohol recovery forever. In less than 200 pages, you will learn how to move beyond alcohol - and beyond pseudo-religious "sobriety" bromides - and start building the life you were born to live.Drinking Sucks! is Chris Scott's self-improvement manifesto for heavy drinkers who simply want to dominate alcohol and rebuild their lives from scratch. After reading this book, you will understand the nature of alcohol addiction and the reasons why you drink the way you do. Everything you ever thought was impossible will become possible the second you take charge of your life.

Book excerpt: Being crowned homecoming queen fast-tracked me to an identity crisis that catalyzed my disclosure of ten years of sexual abuse at the hands of my stepfather. I dropped out of high school for the first half of my senior year while the disclosure was incinerated in my notorious stepfather's career-climbing kiln. I am recovering my authentic self from the rubble of losses amassed over years of enduring entirely narcissistic parents. I felt shame and disgrace about the unsavory and scandalous parts of my life. As a result, I kept quiet and kept my words to myself. I had every reason to die in a self-destructive implosion. Instead, I wrote this book. Recovery is a gritty and ceaseless process that has no finish line. My mother always told me I was going to "need a lot of therapy." She also told me to "never have kids because it will be the worst thing you ever do." My mother was right about the therapy, but she was wrong about the kids. Life is riddled with conflict. Conflict motivates my writing and passion for conflict resolution. Twenty years of therapy at two to three times per week helped me construct a useful and productive life, and it has allowed me to hone my native genius: being a mother. I've given myself a self-accredited PhD in life with a master's in conflict resolution and personality disorders. My greatest hope is that you are entertained and inspired by my life story. The self-discovery that occurred during the creation of this book holds some shocking conclusions. Is it possible that being sexually abused was my saving grace? Is it possible that my alcoholism is not destructive? This book is not a how-to about recovery. It is about self-discovery and where I am in the sucky recovery process.

Book excerpt: From the award-winning author of Break and Teeth comes a raw and honest exploration of complicated identities in a novel about a girl living on the fringe of every fringe group in her small town. Etta is tired of dealing with all of the labels and categories that seem so important to everyone else in her small Nebraska hometown. Everywhere she turns, someone feels she’s too fringe for the fringe. Not gay enough for the Dykes, her ex-clique, thanks to a recent relationship with a boy; not tiny and white enough for ballet, her first passion; not sick enough to look anorexic (partially thanks to recovery). Etta doesn’t fit anywhere—until she meets Bianca, the straight, white, Christian, and seriously sick girl in Etta’s therapy group. Both girls are auditioning for Brentwood, a prestigious New York theater academy that is so not Nebraska. Bianca might be Etta’s salvation…but can Etta be saved by a girl who needs saving herself?

Book excerpt: She's redefining her past, and he's fighting for his future. Can they find love along the way? Completing a demanding Physical Therapy program isn’t just a degree for Taos native Claudia Romero; it’s her declaration to the world that she’s more than her past, more than the girl whose impulsive lie years earlier almost sent her first love to jail. But when she runs into the man she once had a passionate one-night stand with years earlier, there’s no denying the attraction they felt that night is still there, stronger than ever. For Navy SEAL Trevor Hawthorne, it’s been a year and a half since a deadly ambush changed his life forever, the adrenaline rush that was the only life he knew now replaced with the need to constantly prove that he's as good as, if not better than the man he was before. As Claudia grapples with her past and Trevor with his new reality, can they embrace the changes within themselves and take a second chance on love? Or will the shadows of their pasts stand in the way of a happy-ever-after?

In this memoir Tamara goes deep into the world of madness and shares the experience of prolonged psychosis. Coupled with the artwork that she created, this story is a great read for people with schizophrenia, caregivers and mental health workers. Anyone who knows someone who has schizophrenia should read this book! While you travel into the depths of psychotic thinking to understand the delusional world of a person with schizophrenia, this book keeps you entertained and engaged. It is a detailed expression that tells the real-life story of slipping into and then out of madness. Tamara goes on to explain what it's like to live with schizophrenia and the prejudice that she faces on a day to day basis. The discrimination from even people who are close to her is evident, and goes to show that fighting stigma around schizophrenia is a never ending battle. Tamara is adamant that all people with schizophrenia can recover with the right medication and support. Her story is an example of how even in extreme cases schizophrenia can be managed with the right medications and doses. It took more than 5 years for Tamara to fully recover from this tragic illness, in the end she was in a better place than before the onset of psychosis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2003 the Bush Administration's New Freedom Commission asked mental health service providers to begin promoting "recovery" rather than churning out long-term, "chronic" mental health service users. Recovery's Edge sends us to urban America to view the inner workings of a mental health clinic run, in part, by people who are themselves "in recovery" from mental illness. In this provocative narrative, Neely Myers sweeps us up in her own journey through three years of ethnographic research at this unusual site, providing a nuanced account of different approaches to mental health care. Recovery's Edge critically examines the high bar we set for people in recovery through intimate stories of people struggling to find meaningful work, satisfying relationships, and independent living. This book is a recipient of the Norman L. and Roselea J. Goldberg Prize from Vanderbilt University Press for the best book in the area of medicine.
