Book excerpt: A response to increasingly stringent regulation of pollution and toxicity levels in industrial waste discharge, Micellar Enhanced Ultrafiltration: Fundamentals & Applications offers the most complete book available on the benefits and use of micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) to achieve continuous removal of organic and inorganic pollutants. An Unparalleled Book That Addresses Both Academic and Industrial Points of View Several membrane-based techniques, such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis, are currently used in a wide range of applications throughout the textile, pulp and paper, sugar, chemical, pharmaceutical, biomedical, biotechnological, and food industries. However, although reverse osmosis is an effective means of removing contaminants, this book explains why MEUF is a better substitute, as it less expensive, less energy-intensive, and more efficient and practical for a wider range of applications. Topics covered include: Effects of pollution in water and its consequences Various treatment processes and membrane technologies Fundamentals of ultrafiltration Outline of various membrane modules and modeling approaches Principles of colloid chemistry Theories of micelle formation Stability and dynamics of micelles Phenomena of counterion binding Solubilization of organic pollutants Selection criteria for surfactants Various flux enhancement techniques Recovery of precious metals This book conveys how, with proper selection of surfactant and membrane, MEUF can be used to efficiently remove almost all metal ions (heavy metals, lanthanides, radioactive materials, etc.) with reasonably high efficiency and throughput. It also details the MEUF process for removal of inorganic (cations, anions, and their mixture) and organic pollutants. The authors explain how the economy of the overall process makes recovery and reuse of surfactants essential, and they address various influencing factors on the increase in throughput and the resulting operating problems. Elaborating on technologies involving precipitation and other methods, they also illustrate additional potential applications for MEUF technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nanofiltration technique lies between ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis techniques, and it is considered a low-cost process and is capable of removing pesticides, organic matter, desalination of sea water, oil process and pollutants from industrial wastewater. However, the main challenge in implementation of nanofiltration membrane is its ability towards fouling and low performance at high temperature. The use of nanoparticles in the manufacturing of membranes allows for a high degree of control over membrane fouling. Nanoparticle-based membranes can be developed by assembling engineered nanoparticles into porous membranes or blending them with polymeric or inorganic membranes. This book covers topics from multiple ranges from manufacturing of nanofiltration membranes and their applications in wastewater treatment, drinking water treatment, and removal of pollutants, to addressing the fouling issues.

Book excerpt: Surfactant micelle-assisted removal of ions and organic solutes from aqueous media by micellar enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF), which is a membrane separation technique, is discussed in detail. Following general information about micellar structure, counterion binding, substrate solubilization, and medium effect functions of micelles which enable separation of cationic or anionic ions and organic molecules from aqueous media by MEUF are explained in a comprehensive manner. Some of the recent studies on removing pollutants from wastewater effluents of industrial plants by MEUF, and their results have been summarized to inform about the factors affecting the removal efficiency of this technique. Methods for recovery of surfactant and contaminants from retentate or permeate solutions are also given. Selective separation of metal ions of the same charge from multicomponent solutions is another topic of this chapter. In this context, the last part of the chapter provides an overview on every aspects of ligand modified MEUF (LM-MEUF) process. This report comprises a comprehensive review of MEUF and LM-MEUF studies in the literature.

Book excerpt: "Solubilization tests and MEUF experiments were performed with an aqueous feed solution of benzoic acid (molecular weight 122) and Rhodameen T12/90 (molecular weight 798), a twin-head, cationic tertiary amine surfactant. This surfactant has an 18 carbon hydrophobic tail and two hydrophilic polyoxyethylene heads. The equilibrium solubilization of benzoic acid by surfactant solutions was measured by semiquilibrium dialysis. The maximum solubilization was nearly one mole of benzoic acid per mole of Rhodameen." --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aimed to investigate two extraction techniques namely liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) and reverse micellar extraction coupled with ultrafiltration process for tetrachloroethylene (PCE) removal and surfactant recovery purposes. Using surfactant solution to remediate NAPLs gains more attractions. Nevertheless, prior reusing surfactant, a decontamination of surfactant solutions is recommended. In this study, we imitated the surfactant solution similar to one pumped out of the contaminated site, which contains 4%AMA (anionic surfactant), 3%NaCl and 10,000 ppm solubilized PCE. The conventional LLE using five extracting solvents varying the equivalent alkane carbon number (EACN) was investigated to determine the partitioning of PCE from surfactant solution into solvent phase and the %PCE removal. The reverse micellar extraction is another extraction technique based on Winsor type II microemulsion formation, where the micelles break up, migrate into the solvent phase and re-aggregate to form reverse micelles. The released PCE during the micelles break up also partitions into the solvent phase. The result showed that the EACN of extracting solvent and the surfactant solution:solvent volumetric ratio were crucial parameters governing the extraction efficiency of LLE. In addition, other parameters such as molecular structure and functional groups of solvent also have an influence on the PCE partitioning and PCE removal in LLE technique. For reverse micellar extraction, the surfactant solution:solvent volumetric ratio (ranged from 40:1 to 5:1) used in this study did not show significant effects on the surfactant removal (84.9-86.9%) and PCE removal (96.7-98.4%). Furthermore, an ultrafiltration process was used as an additional downstream process after reverse micellar extraction to concentrate the surfactant reverse micelles in the retentate, while passing PCE and solvent as the permeate stream.

Book excerpt: Energy Resources Company has developed a technology for use with enhanced oil recovery to achieve emulsion breaking and surfactant recovery. By using ultrafiltration membranes, the Energy Resources Company process can dewater an oil-in-water type emulsion expected from enhanced oil recovery projects to the point where the emulsion can be inverted and treated using conventional emulsion-treating equipment. By using a tight ultrafiltration membrane or a reverse osmosis membrane, the Energy Resources Company process is capable of recovering chemicals such as surfactants used in micellar polymer flooding.
