Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records and Reminiscences Personal and General I have been informed, and repeat the information, on the authority of an ancient mariner over eighty years of age, and of his corroborator, an old Deal pilot, that on November 29, 1836, there was experienced on the sea coast the greatest gale of the last century. Its effects were especially felt all along the south-eastern coast, and Ramsgate, which as a rule escapes the full force of the worst weather, was not on this occasion exceptionally favoured. If stars and planets give omens, then may the winds and waves be credited with forecasting events, and that the wind was raised to such an extent on the day of my birth may in some way account for the difficulty I have experienced in raising the wind ever since I arrived at such an age as compelled my recognition of necessity as the prolific mother of invention. I think that on Novem ber 29, 1836, all the wind that could be raised was raised, and, there being no storage of force in my special behoof, the supply was then and there, as far as concerned my cm'sse, exhausted. It was very flattering, but scarcely considerate, of the winds to honour my birth with a grand blow-out. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Surely an introduction argues both parties unknown to one another, which, as regards the public and this present scribe, is certainly not the case. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records and Reminiscences, Personal and General, Vol. 2 He had no idea, it seems, that Thackeray had made so much money as enabled him to keep his own carriage. Thackeray replied that he would let him know when the bill came in, and so the Professor, under the impression that Thackeray hired his carriage for occasional outings, consented to defer his contribution until the livery-stable keeper should send in his account. Charles Keene and the Professor were true, natural, Bohemians, and that any literary man, or artist, should possess a carriage, or a liveried servant, or a riding horse, seemed to both Of them quite contrary to all the best traditions and unwritten laws Of Bohemia. A stout stick, thick boots, overcoat, and wallet, these were all the outfit necessary in Charles Keene's or Percival Leigh's opinion for a brother brush or brother penman, with an occasional ride on a 'bus. Book excerpt: It was in 1868, when nine years old or thereabouts, that while looking at a map of Africa of the time and putting my finger on the blank space then representing the unsolved mystery of that continent, I said to myself, with absolute assurance and an amazing audacity which are no longer in my character now: "When I grow up I shall go there."-from A Personal RecordJ sef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski was born in the Ukraine, saw Europe as a child, and saw the world from the sea as a young man. An adventurer and a dreamer from the start, the restlessness of his youth would inform the keen insight he brought to the classic novels he would write, after settling in England, under the name JOSEPH CONRAD (1857-1924), including Lord Jim (1900) and Heart of Darkness (1902).Conrad fills this, his 1912 autobiography, with tales of his Russian childhood and his ocean voyages as a sailor on French and British merchant ships, all told with a deeply reflective spirit and a narrative imagination that elevates the genre of the life story to the level of grand literature. Ringing with the author's own appreciation of the unusual course of his life, this is powerful-and true-background material for a new enjoyment of his enduring works of fiction.

In Ulysses S. Grant: A Victor, Not a Butcher, historian Edward H. Bonekemper III proves that Grant’s casualty rates actually compared favorably with those of other Civil War generals. His perseverance, decisiveness, moral courage, and political acumen place him among the greatest generals of the Civil War—indeed, of all military history. Bonekemper proves that it was no historical accident that Grant accepted the surrender of three entire Confederate armies and won the Civil War. Bonekemper ably silences Grant’s critics and restores Grant to the heroic reputation he so richly deserves.

Butler: Butler's Book General butler has said in his introduction that every point is to be proven. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences, Vol. 1 of 2 Material of such a character makes my duty in one respect an easy one. I have not to relate Mr. Carlyle's history, or describe his character. He is his own biographer, and paints his own portrait. But another difficulty arises from the extent of the resources thrown open to me. His own letters are as full of matter as the richest of his published works. His friends were not common men, and in writing to him they wrote their best. Of the many thousand letters in my possession, there is hardly one which, either on its special merits or through its connec tion with something which concerned him, does not deserve to be printed. Selection is indispensable; a middle way must be struck between too much and too little. I have been guided largely, however, by Carlyle's personal directions to me, and such a way will, I trust, be discovered. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir William Schwenck Gilbert (1836-1911) was the most brilliant dramatist of Victorian England. A daring and cynical playwright, the forerunner of Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw, he was also a prolific journalist and humorous poet (his Bab Ballads are still widely read), and he achieved worldwide fame through his long collaboration with the composer Arthur Sullivan, a collaboration that created such classics as H. M. S. Pinafore, The Mikado, and all the other Savoy operas. Now the story of this remarkable writer's life - and of his stormy relationship with Sullivan - is here chronicled by a renowned authority on Gilbert and on the theatrical and literary scene in Victorian London. For this biography, Jane W. Stedman has returned to original sources, has interviewed survivors, and has scoured a whole variety of Victorian periodicals for reviews, and personal comment. Gilbert emerges as a much more complex and interesting figure than has previously been thought. The book is a worthy companion piece to Arthur Jacobs's recent biography Arthur Sullivan: A Victorian Musician.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lincoln and Grant is an intimate dual-portrait of President Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses S. Grant: their ordinary "Western" backgrounds, their early struggles to succeed, and their history-making relationship during the Civil War. Though generally remembered by history as two very different personalities, the soft-spoken Lincoln and often-crude Grant in fact shared a similar drive and determination, as this in-depth character study illustrates.
