This book was released on 2007 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: von Bomhard presents an edition of the stela found during underwater excavations in the Abukir Bay, at the site of ancient Thonis-Heracleion, and inscribed with the Decree of Sais. The text is a parallel to that inscribed on another stela found at Naucratis at the turn of last century. The author gives an introduction to the discovery of the two stelae, as well as a description of the monuments, including the scenes and captions found in the lunette (Part II). von Bomhard goes on to discuss the arrangement of the texts and figures depicted on the decree, and the possible symbolism behind them. The bulk of the text is occupied by a careful transliteration and translation of the text, followed by an exhaustive bibliography, an index of words discussed, a synoptic overview of orthographic and figurative variations, and an index of Egyptian words. This is an important work that contributes to the understanding of royal benefactions to temples and aspects of trade and taxation systems in force at the time of the decree.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Fields Medal does not have the same public recognition as the Nobel Prizes, they share a similar intellectual standing. It is restricted to one field - that of mathematics - and an age limit of 40 has become an accepted tradition. Mathematics has in the main been interpreted as pure mathematics, and this is not so unreasonable since major contributions in some applied areas can be (and have been) recognized with Nobel Prizes. The restriction to 40 years is of marginal significance, since most mathematicians have made their mark long before this age.A list of Fields Medallists and their contributions provides a bird's eye view of mathematics over the past 60 years. It highlights the areas in which, at various times, greatest progress has been made. This volume does not pretend to be comprehensive, nor is it a historical document. On the other hand, it presents contributions from 22 Fields Medallists and so provides a highly interesting and varied picture. The contributions themselves represent the choice of the individual Medallists. In some cases the articles relate directly to the work for which the Fields Medals were awarded. In other cases new articles have been produced which relate to more current interests of the Medallists. This indicates that while Fields Medallists must be under 40 at the time of the award, their mathematical development goes well past this age. In fact the age limit of 40 was chosen so that young mathematicians would be encouraged in their future work. The Fields Medallists' Lectures is now available on CD-ROM. Sections can be accessed at the touch of a button, and similar topics grouped together using advanced keyword searches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most elements are synthesized, or "cooked", by thermonuclear reactions in stars. The newly formed elements are released into the interstellar medium during a star's lifetime, and are subsequently incorporated into a new generation of stars, into the planets that form around the stars, and into the life forms that originate on the planets. Moreover, the energy we depend on for life originates from nuclear reactions that occur at the center of the Sun. Synthesis of the elements and nuclear energy production in stars are the topics of nuclear astrophysics, which is the subject of this book. It presents nuclear structure and reactions, thermonuclear reaction rates, experimental nuclear methods, and nucleosynthesis in detail. These topics are discussed in a coherent way, enabling the reader to grasp their interconnections intuitively. The book serves both as a textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, with worked examples and end-of-chapter excercises, but also as a reference book for use by researchers working in the field of nuclear astrophysics.

Book excerpt: This book deals with a wide class of novel and efficient adaptive signal processing techniques developed to restore signals from noisy and degraded observations. These signals include those acquired from still or video cameras, electron microscopes, radar, X-rays, or ultrasound devices, and are used for various purposes, including entertainment, medical, business, industrial, military, civil, security, and scientific. In many cases useful information and high quality must be extracted from the imaging. However, often raw signals are not directly suitable for this purpose and must be processed in some way. Such processing is called signal reconstruction. This book is devoted to a recent and original approach to signal reconstruction based on combining two independent ideas: local polynomial approximation and the intersection of confidence interval rule.

Book excerpt: Since the first edition of Contrast-Enhanced MRI of the Breast was published in 1990, further progress has been made in the field and interest in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as an additional tool in the diagnosis of breast disease has increased. However, further questions have arisen concerning the best choice of technique, the most appropriate way to interpret MR images, and the role which MRI might play in the work-up of breast disease. In this edition we give an overview of the latest technical possibilities and present knowledge, which today is based on a much greater range of experience gained by various excellent research groups. It is our aim to help the interested reader in choosing an appropriate technique and in finding those applications which promise the greatest benefit for the patient. The particular advantages and limitations of MRI have been pointed out and the currently known capabilities and still existing limitations of other imaging modalities, including transcutaneous biopsy, discussed. Finally, a chapter concerning the use of MRI in the diagnosis of implant failure, a new situation, has been added. Acknowledgements. Since the first edition was published, much further work and research has been necessary. This would not have been possible without the continuous support of many colleagues, coworkers, and advisors.

Book excerpt: The first edition of Perforator Flaps: Anatomy, Technique, & Clinical Applications was a bestseller that sold out of its initial printing. This new edition has been updated to include ten new chapters and extensive updates on all existing chapters. Many new developments have taken place in the field, including the use of local perforator flaps, including free-style propeller flaps as well as the distal-based sural flap, which is effective for the lower extremity especially when microsurgical skills are unavailable. The editors, leading reconstructive surgeons and pioneers in the field of perforator flap surgery, have assembled a group of world-renowned experts who discuss perforator anatomy and clinical indications for the use of these flaps. The book outlines techniques for flap harvest, from the most basic to the highly advanced. Accompanying the book are four supplemental DVDs that demonstrate actual operating procedures.
