Book Synopsis Reconnaissance Geology of the Precambrian Shield of Ellesmere, Devon and Coburg Islands, Canadian Arctic Archipelago by : Thomas Frisch
Download or read book Reconnaissance Geology of the Precambrian Shield of Ellesmere, Devon and Coburg Islands, Canadian Arctic Archipelago written by Thomas Frisch and published by Energy Mines and Resources Canada. This book was released on 1988 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The northernmost part of the Canadian Shield, which forms a rugged fringe to the eastern High Arctic, was the last large area of the Shield to be mapped at a reconnaissance scale. This report presents the result of that work, covering the Ellesmere-Devon terrane, accessible only by air and for part of the year by sea, and including one human settlement. An overview of the climate, physiography, and wildlife is given in addition to the detailed geology.

This book was released on 1983 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The northernmost part of the stable Canadian Shield constitutes extensive terrains in southeastern Ellesmere, eastern Devon and Coburg islands, District of Franklin. Systematic reconnaissance mapping of this area began in 1977 and, at the time of writing, only some nunataks in the interior of Devon Island remain to be investigated. A summary account is given of the Precambrian geology, based on field observations and petrographic study of several hundred thin sections.

The volume focuses on the Proterozoic to Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the circum-Arctic region with correlations to adjacent orogens"--
Book Synopsis Supercontinents, Orogenesis and Magmatism by : R.D. Nance
Download or read book Supercontinents, Orogenesis and Magmatism written by R.D. Nance and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2024-04-24 with total page 814 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a tribute to the career of J. Brendan Murphy and features papers by over 100 authors from countries all over the world: a testament to the high-profile and far-reaching influence of Brendan’s work. The topics covered fall into three broad categories that encompass Brendan’s main fields of influence: (1) supercontinents and the supercontinent cycle, including reconstructions and modelling; (2) orogenesis and terranes, with a focus on the Appalachian–Variscan and Central Asian orogenic belts and the oceans with which they are associated; and (2) magmatism and magmatic processes, centring on the geochemistry and isotopic compositions of magmas in arc and rift setting. Like Brendan’s own research, the scope of the papers spans the globe and ranges from strongly field-based studies to conceptual analyses. All of the articles, however, are focused on unravelling some critical aspect of geology or aimed at clarifying some crucial geological process. Hence, they also share a theme common to Brendan’s many contributions in emphasizing the importance of process-oriented research.

Book Synopsis Circum-Arctic Lithosphere Evolution by : V. Pease
Download or read book Circum-Arctic Lithosphere Evolution written by V. Pease and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 5-year Circum-Arctic Lithosphere Evolution (CALE) program developed new constraints on the tectonic history of the central Amerasia basin of the Arctic Ocean. This volume is the final synthesis of the CALE program, which brought together an international team of scientists to develop integrated, multi-disciplinary understanding of the region. This approach, based on the integration of much new geological and geophysical data from onshore and offshore , is necessary to advance our understanding of this basin. Regional onshore-to-offshore transects are central to the 18 papers in this volume. The diverse science supporting these crust-to-mantle regional transects includes structural, geochronological, isotopic, potential fields, and seismic reflection and refraction data. Four chapters present circum-Arctic investigations by the regional CALE teams. The final chapter addresses pan-Arctic themes. This unique collaboration, relying on new data and new syntheses of existing data sheds new light on the history of the Arctic Ocean.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dyke swarms are remnants of large igneous provinces, and are pointers of continental break-up events, as well as indicators for ancient continental reconstructions. These global geodynamic aspects are of crucial significance in tectonics, and with recent developments in high-precision age, dating it has become possible to enter these short-lived ma

Book Synopsis Earth Accretionary Systems in Space and Time by : Peter Anthony Cawood
Download or read book Earth Accretionary Systems in Space and Time written by Peter Anthony Cawood and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2009 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accretionary orogens form at convergent plate boundaries and include the supra-subduction zone forearc, magmatic arc and backarc components. They can be broken into retreating and advancing types, based on their kinematic framework and resulting geological character.Accretionary systems have been active throughout Earth history, extending back until at least 3.2 Ga, and provide an important constraint on the initiation of horizontal motion of lithospheric plates on Earth. Accretionary orogens have been responsible for major growth of the continental lithosphere, through the addition of juvenile magmatic products, but are also major sites of consumption and reworking of continental crust through time. The aim of this volume is to provide a better understanding of accretionary processes and their role in the formation and evolution of the continental crust. Fourteen papers deal with general aspects of accretion and metamorphism and discuss examples of accretionary orogens and crustal growth through Earth history, from the Archaean to the Cenozoic.
