This book was released on 2023-10-11 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides comprehensive knowledge, aimed at practicing integrated circuit design engineer or researcher, to learn and design a low noise amplifier (LNA) for single and multiband applications. The content is structured in a way so that even a beginner can follow the design method easily. This book features the following characteristics: different types of LNA designs (with key building blocks) are discussed, and detailed analysis is given for each LNA design, which covers from the fundamental and principal knowledge to the justification of the design approach. Detailed design approaches are using 180 nm and 130nm CMOS technologies, purposely presented in this manner to give exposure to the design of LNA under different technologies. The LNAs in this book are designed for GSM, WCDMA and WLAN standards, but the same method can be used for other frequencies of operation. Comprehensive analyses on the extreme or corner condition effects are highlighted. Besides, detailed derivation of equations relating to the parameters of the LNA’s performance metrics help LNA designers in understanding how the performance metrics of the LNA can be optimized to meet the desired specification. Electromagnetic analyses using Sonnet, an electromagnetic tool able to replace the conventional post-layout simulation with resistance and capacitance parasitic extraction for more accurate frequency performance prediction are presented. The electromagnetic method is proposed to be used in the LNA design as it can accurately predict the LNA’s performance before tape-out for first-pass fabrication. MATLAB codes are provided to generate important S-parameters and noise figure values.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Software defined radio (SDR) is a hot topic in the telecommunications field, with regard to wireless technology. It is one of the most important topics of research in the area of mobile and personal communications. SDR is viewed as the enabler of global roaming and a platform for the introduction of new technologies and services into existing live networks. It therefore gives networks a greater flexibility into mobile communications. It bridges the inter-disciplinary gap in the field as SDR covers two areas of development, namely software development and digital signal processing and the internet. It extends well beyond the simple re-configuration of air interface parameters to cover the whole system from the network to service creation and application development. Reconfigurability entails the pervasive use of software reconfiguration, empowering upgrades or patching of any element of the network and of the services and applications running on it. It cuts across the types of bearer radio systems (Paging to cellular, wireless local area network to microwave, terrestrial to satellite, personal communications to broadcasting) enable the integration of many of today's disparate systems in the same hardware platform. Also it cuts across generation (second to third to fourth). This volume complements the already published volumes 1 and 2 of the Wiley Series in Software Radio. The book discusses the requirements for reconfigurability and then introduces network architectures and functions for reconfigurable terminals. Finally it deals with reconfiguration in the network. The book also provides a comprehensive view on reconfigurability in three very active research projects as CAST, MOBIVAS and TRUST/SCOUT. Key features include: Presents new research in wireless communications Summarises the results of an extensive research program on software defined radios in Europe Provides a comprehensive view on reconfigurability in three very active research projects as CAST (Configurable radio with Advanced Sodftware Technology), MOBIVAS (Downloadable MOBIle Value Added Services through Software Radio and Switching Integrated Platforms), TRUST (Transparently Re-configurable Ubiquitous Terminal) and SCOUT (Smart User-Centric Communciation Environment).

Book excerpt: An Industry Perspective on Key Tunable Technologies and Applications Tunable RF Components and Circuits: Applications in Mobile Handsets provides a technical introduction to the state of the art in tunable radio frequency (RF) components, circuits, and applications and discusses the foundational work that has been done to date. Leading practitioners in the field share their expertise on tunable devices in mobile handset applications. Through these practical viewpoints, readers discover how to use tunable RF techniques and devices to develop successful product designs. A substantial portion of the book focuses on antennas and antenna tuning, reflecting the dominance of the antenna tuning application in today’s commercial market for tunable RF. The book explains how RF-microelectromechanical systems (RF-MEMS), barium strontium titinate (BST), silicon-on-insulator (SOI) field effect transistors (FETs), and high-performance complementary metal oxide semiconductors (CMOS) are used as enabling technologies for tunable functions in current and next-generation radio architectures. The book also describes power amplifier envelope tracking, an emerging and important technique for improving efficiency; presents a network operator’s perspective on the evolution of the handset front end; and explores emerging approaches to production testing of wireless devices.

In its content, the community of NEWCOM++ researchers, shaped under the common ground of a mainly academic network of excellence, have distilled their scientific wisdom in a number of areas characterized by the common denominator of wireless communications, by identifying the medium-long term research tendencies/problems, describing the tools to face them and providing a relatively large number of references for the interested reader. The identified areas and the researchers involved in their redaction reflect the intersection of the major topics in wireless communications with those that are deeply investigated in NEWCOM++; they are preceded by an original description of the main trends in user/society needs and the degree of fulfilment that ongoing and future wireless communications standards will more likely help achieving. The appendix of the Book contains a list of "Millenium Problems", seminal problems in the area of wireless communication networks, characterized by being crucial and still unsolved. The problems have been identified by NEWCOM++ researchers and filtered by the editors of the Vision Book.
