Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reconciliation of Religion and Science: Being Essays on Immortality Eeing that more than half the differences of opinion in philosophy and theology are due to the use of words in different senses, it may be well to define in what sense the words religion and science are used in this volume. It is, I may say, the popular, ordinary, and quite intelligible sense which they commonly bear - indeed, in my opinion, the general public has often a better reason for, and more method in, its use of language than the wise men who are for ever setting it to rights. Science is simply the process by which mankind derives knowledge from reason ing about facts. (occasionally I may have used the word in its more restricted sense of natural science - 21a, that department of knowledge which deals with physical facts.) Religion is the word that describes the relations of man with the power or being whom we call God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reconciliation of Science and Religion What are the natural relations between science and religion? This is a question in which the public has recently manifested a profound interest. On this question a layman and scientific teacher here ventures to offer some thoughts. The discussions in which they are embodied aim to reach some of the ground-principles on which the propositions of science and religion alike rest. They enunciate a substantial basis of harmony and mutual helpfulness, and disclose a promised synthesis of deepest scientific conviction and simplest religious faith. The author has written as he felt profoundly moved to write. He has made a record of honest and earnest convictions; and he flatters himself that his record nowhere betrays the spirit of a partisan. The thoughts here presented, though lying generally beyond the peculiar domain of natural science, have mingled themselves, by a spontaneous interplay of the psychic powers, with the dry details and lofty generalizations of strict science. They have been to the author a source of enjoyment, consolation, and assurance; and he hopes they may serve to ballast the faith of others who have less opportunity for reflection, but who must, nevertheless, if they think at all, grapple with the inevitable and irrepressible questions which arise concerning the validity of their religious beliefs. The author has always entertained an unshaken conviction of the unity of all truth; and the right of all our faculties to activity within limits prescribed or sanctioned by reason. The middle of the last century marks the beginning of present religious thinking. At that time there was a dis tinct uniformity in the presentation of what Christianity is and teaches. The main items were: Hell fire; eternal damnation; the inspiration of the Bible; no salvation for the heathen; salvation by faith; the grace of God; sin; baptism; and heaven for those who believed and were faithful. Salvation was individual and not social. To doubt was one of the greatest of sins. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reconciliation of Religion and Science: Being Essays on Immortality Seeing that more than half the differences of opinion in philosophy and theology are due to the use of words in different senses, it may be well to define in what sense the words "religion" and "science" are used in this volume. It is, I may say, the popular, ordinary, and quite intelligible sense which they commonly bear - indeed, in my opinion, the general public has often a better reason for, and more method in, its use of language than the wise men who are for ever setting it to rights. Science is simply the process by which mankind derives knowledge from reasoning about facts. (Occasionally I may have used the word in its more restricted sense of "natural" science - i.e., that department of knowledge which deals with physical facts.) Religion is the word that describes the relations of man with the power or being whom we call God. Now the quarrel between these two has hitherto consisted in this. Science affirms that nothing is to be regarded as true except that which can be proved by rational arguments addressed to reasonable beings, founded upon facts capable of analysis and verification. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science, religion, philosophy: these three categories of thought have organized humankind’s search for meaning from time immemorial. Reality’s Fugue presents a compelling case that these ways of understanding, often seen as competing, are part of a larger puzzle that cannot be rendered by one account of reality alone. This book begins with an overview of the concept of reality and the philosophical difficulties associated with attempts to account for it through any single worldview. By clarifying the differences among first-person, third-person, and dualist understandings of reality, F. Samuel Brainard repurposes the three predominant ways of making sense of those differences: exclusionist (only one worldview can be right), inclusivist (viewing other worldviews through the lens of one in order to incorporate them all, and thus distorting them), and pluralist or relativist (holding that there are no universals, and truth is relative). His alternative mode of understanding uses Douglas Hofstadter’s metaphor of a musical fugue that allows different “voices” and “melodies” of worldviews to coexist in counterpoint and conversation, while each remains distinct, with none privileged above the others. Approaching reality in this way, Brainard argues, opens up the possibility for a multivoiced perspective that can overcome the skeptical challenges that metaphysical positions face. Engagingly argued by a lifelong scholar of philosophy and global religions, this edifying and accessible exploration of the nature of reality addresses deeply meaningful questions about belief, reconciliation, and being.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion and Science: Their Relations to Each Other at the Present Day I publish the following Essays as an attempt to do something for an object which seems to me of the highest importance in these days, viz. The recon ciliation of religion and science. When I do so, I feel strongly that they fall much short of accomplish ing such a reconciliation. For even if their success in dealing with the questions of which they treat should be much greater than I have any right to believe that it is, still it would be true that they did nothing as to that class of difficulties which concerns the nature and extent of the inspiration of the Bible, and the alleged discrepancies between its statements and the results of modern science and criticism. But I still hope that what I now put forward may have some value. I have endeavoured. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science, Religion and Reality It must, Of course, be admitted that discussions may be Old and famous without on that account having more than a historic interest. The issues they deal with may be dead and buried. Only students who delight in contemplating the mutations of human beliefs may think it worth while to give them decent sepulture with all the honours of a learned epitaph the rest of the world forget that they have ever been. Such cases indeed are fewer than might have been supposed. Even where death seems to be complete, where no smallest trace of some once famous theory appears to survive, a fragment of it will reappear generations later as part of the living tissue of the most advanced speculation.l But in the case of science and religion the main theme has never wholly lost its interest, and each generation insists on resurveying the subject from its own particular point Of view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion and Science: From Galileo to Bergson Thus it is quite natural that only a few typical names should, find their places here: and often no sufficient reason may appear for one being included rather than another. For instance, in the tenth chapter, T. H. Green, F. H. Bradley, and A. J. Balfour are mentioned, While Martineau and the Cairds are passed over. Needless to say, there was no doctrinal prejudice here. Again, in the fourth chapter, Pascal is dealt with at some length, but Boehme, an equally important thinker, is ignored. And so on. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible, Science, and Faith Those who still view the Bible as a divinely inspired book, despite the repeated attacks made on its authenticity and inspiration, as well as those who yet hold to the teachings of their faith, notwithstanding the theories of a certain school of scientists, who relegate religion and belief in a personal God to the limbo of idle fancies, are frequently accused of forswearing their liberty of thought, and of voluntarily placing themselves in a condition of intellectual thraldom which incapacitates them from appreciating the true significance of the most important inductions and generalizations of modern science. Groundless as this charge is, there are not a few, even among intelligent people, who believe it to be substantially true. And yet nothing could be more false or absurd. As well say that the mariner forfeits his freedom of action because, forsooth, he gives heed to the buoys and lighthouses which are stationed along his course, and which signalize reefs and shoals and indicate places where the safety of his vessel would be imperilled or where navigation is impossible. What buoys and lighthouses are to the seafaring man, that expressions of revealed truth and principles of Christian philosophy are to the man of science.
