Book Synopsis Archaeology and the Capitalist World System by : Aron L. Crowell
Download or read book Archaeology and the Capitalist World System written by Aron L. Crowell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating monograph employs a world system model as the basis for archaeological investigation of Russian America that relates local findings to global patterns. Author Aron Crowell examines Russian, Spanish, and American historical sources along with the archaeological evidence to uncover a preliterate culture that left no written record of its contact with European colonial powers. Crowell's particular subject is the indigenous Qikertarmiut people of Kodiak Island off the coast of Alaska. The special case of this tribe serves as a microcosm of the history of colonialism, demonstrating how early European capitalism impacted and, in some cases, destroyed indigenous societies.

Book Synopsis Fort Reliance, Yukon by : Donald Woodforde Clark
Download or read book Fort Reliance, Yukon written by Donald Woodforde Clark and published by Hull, Quebec : Canadian Museum of Civilization. This book was released on 1995 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initially founded by Francois Mercier as a small, semi-independent fur-trading post, Fort Reliance is of particular interest and importance because of its role in opening the Yukon to prospecting and mining, which eventually led to the Klondike discovery. The trading post became the primary focal point for what one author has termed the "Prelude to Bonanza". The location was also a pre-Gold Rush Han Athapaskan settlement, with a unique and somewhat enigmatic set of semisubterranean houses. Traces survive of the original structures, and possibly of all structures ever built there. This study describes the history of Fort Reliance, assesses the nature and extent of archaeological remains, and examines the relationship between Native use of the site, previously known through the recovery of stone artifacts that relate to a precontact or prehistoric technology, and the trading post.
Book Synopsis Historical Archaeology of Marion Creek, Alaska by : James Warren Whitney
Download or read book Historical Archaeology of Marion Creek, Alaska written by James Warren Whitney and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Archaeological investigations of two placer gold mining sites on Marion Creek, Alaska, a tributary of the Koyukuk River, challenge the myth of the independent prospectors of the last frontier and reveal their dependence on the capitalist world-system. The Grassy Mound Cabin site (CHN-024) consists of a small cabin and trash scatter representing individual placer mining dated to the first decade of the 20th century. The Marion Creek Mining Complex site (WIS-286) is a multi-feature site reflecting capital and labor-intensive mining from multiple occupations during the first and second decades of the 20th century. The historical context of gold mining in the Koyukuk district is reconstructed from historical documents, exploring the process by which Alaska was incorporated into the capitalist world-system. Functional analysis of the assemblages and application of the Commodity Flow Model demonstrate how material culture and site economy changed as investments of capital and labor increased"--Leaf iii.

Download or read book Dry Creek written by W. Roger Powers and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With cultural remains dated unequivocally to 13,000 calendar years ago, Dry Creek assumed major importance upon its excavation and study by W. Roger Powers. The site was the first to conclusively demonstrate a human presence that could be dated to the same time as the Bering Land Bridge. As Powers and his team studied the site, their work verified initial expectations. Unfortunately, the research was never fully published. Dry Creek: The Archaeology and Paleoecology of a Late Pleistocene Alaskan Hunting Camp is ready to take its rightful place in the ongoing research into the peopling of the Americas. Containing the original research, this book also updates and reconsiders Dry Creek in light of more recent discoveries and analysis.
