Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of What I Saw, What I Lived Through, and What I Learned, During More Than Fifty Years of Social and Literary Experience I have written them for my own pleasure; be cause friends have seemed interested and amused by scraps Which I have told them; because I think some of my contemporaries may like to be reminded of ways of life and thought Which are passing into oblivion; because I have witnessed some beginnings which are ripening yet; and because I find the present abounds with those to whom some Of my memories have already a certain antiquarian avour. I must express my gratitude to the friends through whose instigation and sympathy I have been led to enjoy these pleasures of memory. I also offer my cordial thanks to the other friends who have given me ready furtherance in the matter of illustrations - viz., to Lord Guthrie. Book excerpt: How have ideas about white women figured in the history of racism? Vron Ware argues that they have been central, and that feminism has, in many ways, developed as a political movement within racist societies. Dissecting the different meanings of femininity and womanhood, Beyond the Pale examines the political connections between black and white women, both within contemporary racism and feminism, as well as in historical examples like the anti-slavery movement and the British campaign against lynching in the United States. Beyond the Pale is a major contribution to anti-racist work, confronting the historical meanings of whiteness as a way of overcoming the moralism that so often infuses anti-racist movements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first full-length study of one of the most widely read publications of Victorian Britain, the London Journal, inserting the story of this magazine into the wider context of the Victorian mass-market periodical. It draws on traditional modes of scholarship in history, art history, and literature as well as on developments in sociology, psychoanalysis, and cultural theory. However, the author ultimately relies on new and extensive primary research to ground the changing ways in which the reading public became consumers of literary commodities on a scale never before seen. Previous commentators have coded the mass market as somehow always 'feminine', and King offers a genealogy of how such a gender identity came about. Finally, King recontextualizes within the Victorian mass market three key nineteenth-century novels-Walter Scott's Ivanhoe, Mary Braddon's Lady Audley's Secret, and Émile Zola's The Ladies' Paradise-and in so doing suggests radically new and unexpected meanings.

Book excerpt: Since the late twentieth century, there has been a strategic campaign to recover the impact of Victorian women writers in the field of English literature. However, with the increased understanding of the importance of interdisciplinarity in the twenty-first century, there is a need to extend this campaign beyond literary studies in order to recognise the role of women writers across the nineteenth century, a time that was intrinsically interdisciplinary in approach to scholarly writing and public intellectual engagement.

Book excerpt: That the self is ‘performed’, created through action rather than having a prior existence, has been an important methodological intervention in our understanding of human experience. It has been particularly significant for studies of gender, helping to destabilise models of selfhood where women were usually defined in opposition to a male norm. In this multidisciplinary collection, scholars apply this approach to a wide array of historical sources, from literature to art to letters to museum exhibitions, which survive from the medieval to modern periods. In doing so, they explore the extent that using a model of performativity can open up our understanding of women’s lives and sense of self in the past. They highlight the way that this method provides a significant critique of power relationships within society that offers greater agency to women as historical actors and offers a challenge to traditional readings of women’s place in society. An innovative and wide-ranging compilation, this book provides a template for those wishing to apply performativity to women’s lives in historical context. This book was originally published as a special issue of Women’s History Review.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who was Mary De Morgan and why should she be dragged out of the shadows cast by her illustrious parents, her male siblings and the members of the Arts and Crafts circle in which she moved? Why should the academic spotlight be shone onto her life and works? De Morgan (1850–1907) was undoubtedly a woman of her time: she was unmarried and therefore one of the million or so “odd” women who had to earn their own living, which she did mainly by writing. She was one of the many who took part in the great effort to “improve” the lives of the poor in the East End of London; she was caught up in the spiritualist phenomena, not only because her mother was an ardent supporter and practitioner, but also because De Morgan herself was considered to be a “seer”; she, like many Victorians, suffered from the curse of tuberculosis but despite going to live in Egypt for health reasons, she then became the directress of a girls’ reformatory until her death. Through the analysis of her fairy tales, her sole novel, her non-fictional articles and her unpublished short stories, De Morgan is revealed to be an early feminist and “New Woman,” an advocate of William Morris’s philosophies and a social reformer, but also a rather disappointed and disillusioned woman. Letters to and from her family and friends paint a colourful picture of family life during the second half of the nineteenth century, and extracts from well-known people’s biographies, reminiscences and diaries flesh out De Morgan’s character and help explain why George Bernard Shaw considered her to be a “devil incarnate.”
