Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections and Opinions of an Old Pioneer Since November, 1860, I had not further prosecuted my design until the month of March, 1878. In the month of December, 1877, a learned and distinguished historian, then and now engaged in writing a general history of the Pacific coast, called upon me, and kindly requested me to furnish him with such historical data as I possessed. Having already reduced to writing a considerable portion of my recollections and Opinions, I determined to finish the work I had undertaken, and to permit him to take a copy of all, or such portions as he might desire, for his use in preparing his own history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Pioneer I was born in Bartow County, Georgia, on the 22md day of January, 1829. Sometime during my in fancy, and at a period too early to be remembered, my father and his family moved to East Tennessee, where we lived until I was ten years old. About this time re ports concerning the Platte Purchase and its splendid farming land began to reach us. I do not now recall the exact channel through which these reports came, but I think some of our relatives had gone there and had written back urging us to come. My father final ly yielded and in the spring of 1839 sold his Tennessee farm and prepared for the long journey overland. I was old enough at the time to take some note of what passed, and I remember that my father received four thousand dollars for his land in Indiana shin plas ters. I recall also the preparations that were made for the journey - the outfitting of the wagons, gathering the stock together, and most important of all, the part assigned to me. I was provided with a pony, saddle and bridle and given charge of a herd of loose cattle and horses. We had a rude camp outfit and car ried along with us all the household plunder with which we expected to start life in the new country. As may be well imagined, there was not a great deal of it, although the family was large. In those days the peo ple had to be satisfied with the barest necessities. Some idea of the extent of this part of my father's worldly property may be given by saying that the entire outfit, including camp equipment, was loaded into two wagons. I shall never forget the morning we started. Everything had been loaded the day before, ex cept the articles necessary to the sojourn over night. We were up bright and early, had breakfast in little better than camp style, and were off before sun up. My father, mother, and the younger children took the first wagon, and one of my brothers and my sisters the second. I was upon my pony and in my glory. The wagons moved forward and I rounded up the cattle and horses and forced them along after the wagons. I was too young to feel any tender sentiment toward the old home or to appreciate the fact that I was leav ing it forever, but I remember that my father and mother often looked back, and as we passed over the hill out of sight, I saw them turn and wave a long farewell. Many times since I have thought of that scene and have learned to know full well its meaning to my father and mother. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Pioneer It is with this end in view, to preserve the life of the old days in its many colors, that these recollections are penned. There was more to this life than has been touched by the parlor romancers or makers of moving-picture films. Per haps some day these memories may serve to illumine the historian delving in the human records of the past. And perhaps, also, and this is the author's dearest wish, they may inspire young readers to hold to the hardy traditions of the 'fifties and to keep this spirit alive in a country des tined soon to be densely peopled with newcomers from the long-settled parts of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a California Pioneer This book of Recollections was entirely written after I had passed my eighty-eighth birthday, the chief inducement to the undertaking being a desire on my part to leave to my children, my grandchildren, and their posterity a story of my long life. There will, therefore, be found in these pages some things that will prove of little or no interest to the average reader; but these purely personal passages are, I trust, few in number, and they may be readily skipped. That all my readers will give full credence to everything that is hereinafter related is more than I can reasonably expect; but this consideration does not militate against the truth of the statement I now make: that, however extravagant, however extraordinary, some of the incidents here referred to may appear, I have endeavored to give a truthful narrative, and that, while the lapse of years and the infirmities of age have doubtless caused my memory to fail in reference to exact dates, distances, directions, and such trifling matters, I have in all the substantials presented the truth. The tints of youth; the tumult of battle; the old and worn and tattered banners; the neighing horses; the broken caissons; the prisoners of war; the Mis sissippi flotilla; the defiant rebel yell on the midnight departure from Corinth; Bragg's broken columns on the shifting field of Mission Ridge; the bloody repulse of Kenesaw and Marietta; the discomfiture of Hood before Atlanta; the exultant March to the Sea; the advance in storm and flood through the Caro linas; the bloody hour before Bentonville; the Surrender of Johnson at Raleigh; and the pageant on Pennsylvania Avenue following the funeral car of President Lincoln. Gone are they all; and I too am soon gone! In the fleeting moment the aging veteran, hat in hand, waves a salute to the oncoming youth, bearing full high advanced the colors of his country to undreamed-oi triumphs: for this is our warfare; no battle; no crown of Victory! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of an Old Settler: Stories of Kent and Vicinity in Pioneer Times The question has often been asked, what this country looked like in early days. Inasmuch as I was one of the early settlers, I thought I would give you some idea of it. I came into this country, or into Hudson, township, the 10th day of May, 1804. At that time this country was an unbroken wilderness, filled up with wild men and wild animals. Probably forty Indians to one white man. They were very friendly and peaceable. There were three tribes that inhabited this section of country - the Senecas, the Taways, the Chippeways. They appeared to live very friendly with each other as tribes. They had their hunting grounds all bounded, so that each tribe know their bounds as well as you would know your farm. The Seneca Chief's name was John Bigson. He was, I should think, a little short of six feet tall, of a stout, muscular frame, and keen black eyes, and a well proportioned man; had a stern look, and what he said was law with his tribe. He scarcely ever smiled, and I think he was perfectly honest, and what he said he meant. If he promised you anything, you might be sure of it, and if any of the rest promised anything, they had to be as good as their word. And if you promised them anything, they looked for it with as much grace, and if you lied to them, they would never forget it. The Taway Chief's name was Stignish. He was a very pleasant looking man, and honor and honesty was his law, and he taught his people so. The Seneca Chief had his headquarters in Streetsboro, on land now owned by Samuel Olin, that was quarters on or near the Cuyahoga River. I have been there a great many times when they lived there, and if they had anything they could bestow upon you in the way of eatables, it was as free as the water. They thought it was a privilege to give, for they thought it was a token of friendship, and if they gave one, they gave all that were present. Their wigwam was about twenty-five feet long or more, and they had their fire through the middle, and had it so constructed as to leave room for a tier of them to lie down on each side of the fire, so as to have their feet to the fire, for they lay on their skins and furs, and covered over with their blankets. They had a space left open on the ridge of their camp to let the smoke pass out. They had their wigwam thatched with bark, so that it was tight and warm, and had a door in each end, so that they could haul in their wood without much chopping. They lay there as warm and comfortable as a man in his palace. The Seneca Chief used to gather in all his family connections and lay there through the winter. And they would kill their meat before the hardest weather commenced, so they would not be compelled to go out in bad weather to get their living. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Oregon: Jottings of Personal Recollections of a Pioneer of 1850 During the month of October, 1850, there were fitted out in San Francisco three brigs, suitable for carrying passengers, which were advertised for sailing during that month to the mouth of the Umpqua river. No American vessel had ever entered that port before. The mines had been discovered in northern California, and a company had been organized in San Francisco to locate townsites on the Umpqua river. The townsite at the mouth of the river was called Umpqua City. Up the river at the head of navigation was Scottsburg; farther up, near the site of the post of the Hudson Bay Company, was Elkton, and still farther up, on the trail from Oregon to California, was Winchester. This route was intended to reach the northern California mines. Flaming hand-bills were posted showing the advantages of the route and advertising the cities as before named. Plats of these new cities were made out, and lots were offered for sale at public auction at real estate offices in San Francisco. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of the Log School House Period: And Sketches of Life and Customs in Pioneer Days So far as the author's observation extends, our bibliography presents no one book wherein the subjects which furnish the headings for the several chapters in this little volume, are treated. Painfully aware of this fact, and of the hesitancy on the part of writers of known ability to attempt the work, he has devoted much of the time for the past year to the preparation of the matter, and in arranging for the proper illustrations of this book, in the hope that it may atone in some degree for this neglect. He makes no claim to literary excellence, but in his own plain way has treated the various subjects in language which, he trusts may at least be understood, and flatters himself that in so doing, he has rescued from an early oblivion some of the customs, practices, implements and utensils, prevalent in pioneer days, and, incidentally forestalled the work of the archaeologist in exploring old attics, and explaining to future generations the uses and purposes to which the strange things therein found were devoted. More than any one else possibly can, he regrets that he has been unable to bring to the work more ability, and a better style in composition: he hopes, however, that such lack will be considered by a charitable public, as fully compensated by the aptitude and ability displayed by Mr. R. J. Tucker, in the illustrations. It is rare indeed to find one in whom such artistic ability and great fondness for the things which were peculiar to the olden times, are so happily united. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bemocked of Destiny: The Actual Struggles and Experiences of a Canadian Pioneer, and the Recollections of a Lifetime I began to write these simple notes of my past life, not with any View to publication at all, but for a private, sacred purpose. My son and only living child was scarcely two years old when his mother died, and of course he would not remember anything about her. Then he has been brought up far away from me, and for over twenty years now we have seldom been together for any length of time. I, there fore, naturally wished to leave him a short memorial of her, and also a more detailed account of my own life.
