Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of a Cavalryman of the Civil War After Fifty Years: 1861-1865 Years ago at one of the reunions of the Ninth Ohio Cavalry it was voted that I should write a history of our regiment. I was so occupied in business then that I could not find time to comply with their wishes. Now that I have had sufficient time I have carried out their request. With the help of some of my old comrades, I have undertaken to dig through the accumulated memories of fifty years and record incidents, - many of them commonplace enough to us then, but to which time has added a charm which warms our hearts to each other and to this dear land of ours. As a regiment the Ninth Ohio Cavalry, which belonged to the Army of the West, operated most of the time under general orders on its own responsibility. Often stationed quite in advance of the infantry, we were thus brought into close touch with the Southern people, and as a result dislikes on both sides were very much modified. Professional historians have written of the campaigns and battles of the Civil War. The incidents here preserved are side-lights on its dark background but they helped in a small way to modify the bitterness of it all. Book excerpt: Fiercely loyal to his adopted South, young Isaac Hermann, at twenty-one, joined the Washington Rifles which rendezvoused with the First Georgia Regiment near Laurel Hill, Virginia in 1861. His accent drew considerable attention, whereupon he mounted a nearby stump and announced: "Gentlemen, it seems that I am eliciting a great deal of curiosity; now all of you will know me as Isaac Hermann, a native Frenchman, who came to assist you to fight the Yankees." Almost fifty years later Capt. Hermann was urged by his many friends to write his experiences while serving with three branches of the Confederate Army. He had seen action with the First Georgia Regiment in Virginia under Generals Henry R. Jackson and T. J. "Stonewall" Jackson.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peer through history at Confederate Lieutenant General James Longstreet, whose steady nature and dominating figure earned him the nicknames "War Horse," "Bulldog," and "Bull of the Woods." Years after the war, Longstreet's reputation swung between Confederate hero and brutish scoundrel. A dutiful soldier with a penchant for drink and gambling, Longstreet spoke little but inspired many, and he continues to fascinate Civil war historians. In his memoir From Manassas to Appomattox, Longstreet reveals his inner musings and insights regarding the War between the States. Ever the soldier, he skims over his personal life to focus on battle strategies, war accounts, and opinions regarding other officers who were as misunderstood as him. The principle subordinate under General Robert E. Lee, Longstreet provides several accounts of Lee's leadership and their strong partnership. An invaluable firsthand account of life during the Civil War, From Manassas to Appomattox not only illuminates the life and ambitions of Lieutenant General James Longstreet, but it also offers an in-depth view of army operations within the Confederacy. An introduction and notes by prominent historian James I. Robertson Jr. and a new foreword by Christian Keller offer insight into the impact of Longstreet's career on American history.

Book excerpt: Includes Civil War Map and Illustrations Pack – 224 battle plans, campaign maps and detailed analyses of actions spanning the entire period of hostilities. Born into a distinguished Virginian family, Randolph McKim left university to join the Confederate cause in 1861. Heavily engaged in the fighting in 1861 and 1862 at the first battle of Manassas and Stonewall Jackson’s Valley Campaign, even losing a horse shot under him at Cross Keys, his gallantry did not go unnoticed: he was mentioned in numerous dispatches for his heroic conduct, most significantly for volunteering to resupply Confederate troops under the withering fire of Federals at Culp’s Hill during the battle of Gettysburg. Despite all the signs of a career as an officer of great merit, a higher calling intervened and he resigned to join the clergy, remaining with the Confederate forces as a Chaplain until the end of the War. His memoirs are a testament to his honesty, straight-forwardness and his experiences of the war. Author — McKim, Randolph H. 1842-1920. Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in New York : Longman's, Green, 1911. Original Page Count – xvii, 362 pages. Illustrations – 6 and 224 illustrations
