Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the oldest scriptures of Theravada Buddhism much attention is given to the jhanas, high levels of meditative attainment distinguished by powerful concentration and purity of mind. Ven. Dr. Gunaratana examines these jhanas within the context of Buddhist teaching as a whole and particularly within the meditation disciplines taught by the Buddha. Beginning with the ethical foundation for meditation, the role of the teacher, the classical subjects of meditation, and the appropriateness of these subjects to individual practitioners, the author traces the practice of meditation to the higher reaches of realization. The eight stages of jhana are individually analyzed and explained in terms of their relation to one another and to the ultimate goal of the teaching. The author makes the critical distinction between the mundane jhanas and supermundane jhanas, pointing out that the lower four, while leading to various mental powers and psychic attainments, are not necessary to full enlightenment and may be developed or bypassed as the medita-tor wishes. The author goes on to explain the place of the jhanas among the accomplishments of an arahat and elucidate their usefulness for a dedicated meditator.

Book excerpt: My name is Bill H., and I'm, well...complicated! Clinically, I'm a recovering drug addicta "with Attention Deficit Disorder to boota "who, after twenty-two years of consuming a plethora of mind-bending toxins, is very much grateful to be alive. In 1996, Bill recognized a problem with drugs and alcohol, and subsequently checked himself into a treatment center. As a result, Bill, in a volunteer capacity, taught weekly classes on recovery for ten years at the rehab center that helped him to help himself. Having personally worked with approximately eight thousand patients in recovery, he provided Twelve-Step based support and teachings to those in need. One of the objectives of this book is to incorporate into the mainstream the author's understanding of the Twelve-Step Program of Recovery. Although this book was written from the perspective of a recovering addict, the reality is that you don't have to be a drug addict or alcoholic to benefit from a spiritual pilgrimage that has led millions to peace of minda "from desperation and despair, to hope and then Serenity. After all, the only difference between the people of 'mainstream America' and those with addiction(s) are the ways in which they handle their problems. Peace of mind resides within these pages. This book is Bill's effort to reach out and, through lessons learned from his own experiences, help those in need find their way to Sobriety, Sanity and Serenity. Through his teachings and stories (some funny, some not so funny), the author hopes to touch every emotion, and perhaps feelings you didn't know you had."

Book excerpt: Ina Ferris examines the way in which the problem of 'incomplete union' generated by the formation of the United Kingdom in 1800 destabilised British public discourse in the early decades of the nineteenth century. Ferris offers the first full-length study of the chief genre to emerge out of the political problem of Union: the national tale, an intercultural and mostly female-authored fictional mode that articulated Irish grievances to English readers. Ferris draws on current theory and archival research to show how the national tale crucially intersected with other public genres such as travel narratives, critical reviews and political discourse. In this fascinating study, Ferris shows how the national tales of Morgan, Edgeworth, Maturin, and the Banim brothers dislodged key British assumptions and foundational narratives of history, family and gender in the period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a background in business and a life-long interest in spirituality, Angus Jenkinson brings a rich blend of professional and practical know-how, contemporary experience and ancient wisdom to tackling the very modern problem of stress. The sense of being under stress, he suggests, is as much to do with our response to events as the events themselves. Symptoms of stress can be seen as a form of advice, helping us to grow as individuals and develop inner resources needed to meet the inevitable challenges of twenty-first century life. These resources include courage and compassion, freedom and self-determination, clear thinking, positivity and love. Thus equipped, we may approach the adventure of life with serenity, in turn creating less stress for other people. From Stress to Serenity collects advice, practical exercises and insights from many traditions and diverse sources, including Rudolf Steiner, Jung, Nelson Mandela, Julian of Norwich, Marshall Rosenberg and Buddha. The result is an enlightening workbook as well as a thought-provoking analysis of the roots of stress and its meaning for our personal and spiritual development.
