Download or read book Favorite Seafood Recipes from the Coast of Maine written by Gloria Daniels and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-02-24 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I started this seafood cookbook to bring some order to my recipe collection of 50 years. This collection consists of recipes I've collected from friends and family over the years. There are recipes I've developed myself over the many years of feeding a large family. Quite a few of these recipes were generously shared by local restaurants, clam shacks and even push carts from the local area and I've also added many I've collected from our travels around the state. Many of these establishments no longer exist but they live on in our memories because of the wonderful meals that are their legacy. Fresh seafood, excellently prepared is easy to find in Maine. Many people return year after year drawn here by the memories of our great treasure, Maine seafood. If you've visited Maine and would like to recreate some of these meals, you'll love this book.

Book excerpt: "The Texas Folklore Society has been alive and kicking for over one hundred years now, and I don't really think there's any mystery as to what keeps the organization going strong. The secret to our longevity is simply the constant replenishment of our body of contributors. We are especially fortunate in recent years to have had papers given at our annual meetings by new members--young members, many of whom are college or even high school students. "These presentations are oftentimes given during sessions right alongside some of our oldest members. We've also had long-time members who've been around for years but had never yet given papers; thankfully, they finally took the opportunity to present their research, fulfilling the mission of the TFS: to collect, preserve, and present the lore of Texas and the Southwest. "You'll find in this book some of the best articles from those presentations. The first fruits of our youngest or newest members include Acayla Haile on the folklore of plants. Familiar and well-respected names like J. Rhett Rushing and Kenneth W. Davis discuss folklore about monsters and the classic 'widow's revenge' tale. These works--and the people who produced them--represent the secret behind the history of the Texas Folklore Society, as well as its future."--Kenneth L. Untiedt
Book Synopsis When the Senate Worked for Us by : Michael Pertschuk
Download or read book When the Senate Worked for Us written by Michael Pertschuk and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-26 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every politically sentient American knows that Congress has been dominated by special interests, and many people do not remember a time when Congress legislated in the public interest. In the 1960s and '70s, however, lobbyists were aggressive but were countered by progressive senators and representatives, as several books have documented. What has remained untold is the major behind-the-scenes contribution of entrepreneurial Congressional staff, who planted the seeds of public interest bills in their bosses' minds and maneuvered to counteract the influence of lobbyists to pass laws in consumer protection, public health, and other policy arenas crying out for effective government regulation. They infuriated Nixon's advisor, John Ehrlichman, who called them "bumblebees," a name they wore as a badge of honor. For his insider account, Pertschuk draws on many interviews, as well as his fifteen years serving on the staff of the Senate Commerce Committee that Senator Warren Magnuson chaired and as the committee's Democratic Staff Director. That committee became, in Ralph Nader's words, "the Grand Central Station for consumer protection advocates."

You can also visit key places in Lincoln's life, like the home of merchant Colonel Jones, who allowed a young Abe to read all his books, or Ward's Academy, where Mary Todd Lincoln attended school.
