Book Synopsis Language and Mental Development by : Pierre Oléron
Download or read book Language and Mental Development written by Pierre Oléron and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-17 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1977, this book considers the role language plays in psychological development. It tries to avoid general discussions of "language and thought", an approach already sufficiently developed by philosophers and (although somewhat less) by psychologists. Instead it attempts to focus specifically upon what we can learn about the topic from available research findings at the time. Theoretical considerations are developed only when necessary to clarify an issue or to facilitate the integration of presented material. The aim of the work is simple – to share with the reader the author’s thoughts and understanding of available knowledge of the role of language in mental development.

Book excerpt: This volume is the result of a symposium titled "Constructivist Approaches to Atypical Development and Developmental Psychopathology." What emerges from the work included here is a record of innovative extensions, refinements, and applications of the concept of constructivism. The chapters not only demonstrate the compatibility of constructivism with investigations of atypicality, but also the generation of a constructivist perspective for a wide array of problems in developmental psychology.

Book Synopsis The Development of Meaning by : Joan Tough
Download or read book The Development of Meaning written by Joan Tough and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation This book sets out a clear and logical framework for the teaching of reading throughout different age groups, whereby systematic progression can be developed within a structured framework. A detailed set of recommendations are offered and are both illustrated and justified, for the teacher to examine and use. Much has been written about the importance of skilled and efficient reading and language usage in the early years of education, but all too few teachers are aware of the need for the development of reading skills in an ordered sequence with older children as well. Problems such as the motivation of the learner, the place of reading in a mass media age, the extent and classification of reading failure and the diagnosis of reading problems are examined, and the complexities of the linguistic background and of linguistic deprivation are covered thoroughly.

Book Synopsis Experimental Psychology Its Scope and Method: Volume VII (Psychology Revivals) by : Pierre Oléron
Download or read book Experimental Psychology Its Scope and Method: Volume VII (Psychology Revivals) written by Pierre Oléron and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in English in 1969, the book opens with a chapter by Pierre Oléron on intellectual activities. These fall into three groups: inductive activities (the apprehension of laws, relations and concepts), reasoning and problem solving. It describes typical methods and essential results obtained by relevant experiments. There are two chapters by Jean Piaget and his collaborator Bärbel Inhelder. The first, on mental images, breaks new ground: it describes original experiments carried out by Piaget and associates with children of various ages. Piaget examines the relations between images and motor activity, imitation, drawing and operations. He also classifies images according to their degree of complexity and show why children have inadequate images of some processes. The second chapter is on intellectual operations and Piaget gives a summary of the main findings of a number of his earlier books, on the child’s notions of conservation, classification, seriation, number, measurement, time, speed and chance. In the last chapter, Pierre Gréco discusses learning and intellectual structures. He describes the work of psychologists with rats in mazes and formulating theories of animal learning. Gestalt psychology and various other interpretations are examined and Greco also pays attention to Piaget’s view of ‘structural learning’ based on experience.
