Book excerpt: We are especially grateful to Dr. Philip Corfman and his colleagues of the Population and Reproduction Grants Branch of NICHD for making this Conference possible. The format of this volume follows in general the order in which the papers were presented during the Conference. The Conference was divided into four sessions, each of which was presided over by a capable and distinguished scientist. Each of these chairmen, Drs. T. H. Hamilton, G. A. Puca, R. L. Vande Wiele and H. G. Williams-Ashman provided valuable discussion and for their services we are most appreciative. The Editors are indebted to Mr. Robert Colligan for his help in organizing and in redacting the manuscripts. A special commen dation is also extended to Ms. Mary Jane Fowler who cheerfully and efficiently typed this entire volume. Finally, we express thanks to the individual participants of the Conference for their cooperation and prompt submission of the manuscripts and to the Plenum Press for ensuring the rapid publica tion of this volume. Anthony R. Means, Ph.D. Bert W. O'Malley, M. D.

Book Synopsis How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease by : United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General
Download or read book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease written by United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Book Synopsis Molecular Basis of Sex Hormone Receptor Function by : Hinrich Gronemeyer
Download or read book Molecular Basis of Sex Hormone Receptor Function written by Hinrich Gronemeyer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How sex hormone receptors and all the other members of the nuclear receptor superfamily do such a remarkable job has fascinated scientists for decades. A series of discoveries in the past few years has dramatically enlightened our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that govern nuclear receptor action. The elucidation of the 3D structures of several nuclear receptor ligand binding domains in the presence of agonists or antagonists has provided an allosteric concept of ligand action, and the discovery of a plethora of ligand-dependent protein interactions has linked this transconformation with the ability of nuclear receptors to act as transcriptional activators and repressors and the enzymatic modification of chromatin and factors of the basal transcriptional machinery.

Book excerpt: The Center for Population Research of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development began operations in August 1968 and is engaged in research dealing with health-related popula tion problems. We organize and support projects for the develop ment of new contraceptives and in the broad field of population research in the social sciences o The Center also supports a variety of projects dealing with the mechanism of action and medical effects of contraceptives now in use, particularly oral contraceptives and intrauterine devices. These studies were initiated several years ago at the specific direction of Congresso We were pleased, therefore, with the opportunity to help organize and support this important and timely conference on the "Metabolic Effects of Gonadal Hormones and Contraceptive Steroids," the subject of which forms an integral part of the Center's research program. April, 1969 Philip Ao Corfman Director Center for Population Research National Institute of Child Health and Human Development v PREFACE Progress in science is often associated with either a "sixth sense" or an inevitable timeliness. Both factors, perhaps, led the members of the Endocrinology Study Section of the National Institutes of Health to propose, in 1966, that an expanded view of the effects of gonadal hormones, in general, and the contra ceptive steroids, in particular. was needed. There had been ample evaluations of the clinical symptomatology, contraceptive efficacy, and effects on the reproductive system, but there was a dearth of information on their multiple systemic'metabolic effects.
