Book excerpt: Trapping surveys for the invasive green crab (Carcinus maenas) were undertaken in Eastern Nova Scotia and in the Bras d'Or Lakes in 1999-2000 and 2005. Interviews were also conducted with fishermen and other coastal inhabitants. Green crab were widespread throughout the sampling area and showed no change in range over the time period. Green crab abundance either decreased or did not change between 1999-2000 and 2005. Catch rates of green crab in the Bras d'Or Lakes were lower in 2005 than the earlier period. The decline in green crab abundance in Bras d'Or Lakes was not clearly linked to lower water temperatures. Outside of the Bras d'Or Lakes, there were no significant differences in green crab catch rate between 1999-2000 and 2005.--Abstract.

Book excerpt: The invasive green crab (Carcinus maenas) has increased in abundance and distribution among Oregon's estuaries. Its global success in establishing in new environments and tolerance for abiotic stressors, such as temperature, raises concern for C. maenas to negatively influence native crab species, especially given global climate change. To improve in predicting invasion impacts, this work analyzed the results from a controlled tank experiment at Portland State University and the field data on a population of C. maenas in South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (SSNERR). The aquarium experiment documented predation pressure on C. maenas across a range of temperatures (9° to 30°C) and predatory crabs Callinectes sapidus, Cancer productus, and, as a control C. maenas. The behavioral responses of prey C. maenas were observed across temperature and predator combinations. There were five categories of behavioral responses measured in time duration. The west Atlantic C. sapidus preyed heavily on C. maenas, especially at warmer water temperatures; however, east Pacific C. productus preyed much less on C. maenas and only at the cold temperatures, suggesting different trajectories of biotic resistance across the coasts as waters warm. Crab behavior aligned with the predation findings. For example, C. productus were most active at 9°C and all died at 27°C and higher. In tanks with C. productus, C. maenas were most aggressive at warm temperatures. In contrast C. maenas spent more time feeding at 9°C when in tanks with C. sapidus and, surprisingly, also with C. productus. Crab trap data from SSNERR was plotted on a map to identify surrounding habitat and bottom substrate of areas with high catch per unit effort (CPUE) of C. maenas in the last six years. Mean CPUE of C. maenas was below five throughout the SSNERR region with sites closest to the mouth of the estuary having the highest CPUE rates. Little structure was surrounding trapping sites; however, there was seagrass at sites with the highest CPUE of C. maenas. The mean CPUE difference of native species prior to (2002-2016) and following (2016-2021) C. maenas abundance increase in 2016 was compared to the mean CPUE of C. maenas in the last six years. Results indicated no correlation between the CPUE of C. maenas influencing the difference of CPUE of native crab species. The tolerance and predation avoidance demonstrated from prey C. maenas in warmer temperatures indicate their ability to acclimate and/or adapt in stressful climate change conditions of higher water temperatures. This is of concern due to the increasing potential to negatively affect Oregon native crab species, such as C. productus over time.

Book excerpt: The objectives of this study are to detect the presence of invasive European green crab Carcinus maenas in nearshore habitats at locations in southern Southeast Alaska, including Revillagigedo and Gravina Islands, targeted for potential suitability for establishment. Where the invasive crab is detected, additional surveys will be implemented to determine the magnitude of abundance and delineate distribution. ShoreZone is used to identify survey locations. Roadside and remote shoreline molt and trapping surveys will be conducted. Alaska Department of Fish and Game will use presence and absence data to understand the extent of the aquatic invasive species in southern Southeast Alaska and may inform future assessment.

Book excerpt: Environmental management is becoming more informed through the use of less conventional knowledge sources to understand environmental systems. Following this realization, our study accesses both local and scientific knowledge to improve understanding of which environmental factors drive local-scale distribution of an invasive species, the European Green Crab (Carcinus maenas L.). It also attempts to understand how C. maenas behaviour might differ in the South Shore area of Nova Scotia, Canada. We synthesized scientific knowledge through an extensive literature review, while interviewing local South Shore fishermen who have experience with C. maenas. While several environmental factors are delineated, our research also notes internal (i.e. age, sex, moult phase) and temporal (i.e. seasonal, tidal, diel) variables that affect local distribution patterns. Local knowledge of this species is still developing, however it may play a significant role in understanding the local distributions and movements of this species, especially as knowledge develops.

Book excerpt: Establishment of the European green crab (Carcinus maenas) on the west coast United States has led to concerns regarding loss of eelgrass beds and influence on marine communities. To begin examining whether predators can potentially buffer green crab expansion, I studied river otter (Lontra canadensis) diet from scat remains and estimated green crab abundance from removal trapping efforts. River otter scats on the Wa'atch and Tsoo-Yess rivers, Washington, USA, were collected during August-September 2018 and April-September 2019. Hard remains of prey were reported as percent frequency of occurrence, and green crab prey were compared to monthly catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE). Scats collected from the Tsoo-Yess River contained no green crab, perhaps due to the relatively low abundance of green crab compared to other crustacean and fish prey. River otters consumed green crab in the Wa'atch River, but its low occurrence in their diet (0.7-5.2%) suggests that they were not an important prey source. However, I hypothesize that if green crab numbers increase there will be a subsequent increase in consumption by river otters and, as such, suggest documenting the population status of green crabs in both rivers, and conducting additional predator-prey diet studies to gauge the potential for long-term biotic resistance of green crab populations.
