Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the anthropogenic pressures on the fresh water bodies and in particular, the Dal and Anchar Lake. As a result of climate change and global warming there is a likelihood that the glaciers which feed these water bodies may be lost. The lakes discussed in this volume can prove a vital source of information on water and biodiversity as well as the environmental features. The detailed examination of phytoplankton and zooplankton in this volume will prove a key factor for future studies in the field of biology and ecology. An in-depth analysis on the physical-chemical properties of the lakes' water is also presented.

At a time when the population is significantly increasing, with resources decreasing, this resource is directly relevant to helping communities understand and improve fishery production management in a sustainably way. Sections explore various scientific literature on the impact of community-based fishing, participatory management of water bodies, methodologies for studies on community-based fisheries management, and interviews of workers working on community-based fisheries. This information will be most useful to fish farmers, aquaculturists, fish and fishery scientists, research scholars and anyone else interested in this field. Based on 30 years of scientific research, this resource emphasizes the need for the management of resources through the involvement of the local community while also providing a framework for participatory collaboration. - Provides methods of data collection and statistical tools for data analysis - Presents the basic procedures necessary to conduct a CBFM study - Includes information on the impacts of climate change and economics

Book excerpt: Wetlands occur expansively all over the world in all the climatic zones and are appraised to harbour nearly 6.4% of the Earth’s surface, of which India domiciles about 18.4% of global wetlands and Gujarat 36% of country wetlands. As per Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA), wetlands deliver 45% of the world’s natural productivity and ecosystem services of which the benefits are estimated at $20 trillion a year. Thus, wetlands exhibit enormous diversity according to their genesis, geographical location, water regime and chemistry, dominant plants and soil or sediment characteristics. Wetlands directly and indirectly support millions of people in providing services such as food, fibre and raw materials, storm and flood control, clean water supply, scenic beauty and educational and recreational benefits. Apart from beneficiary contribution of wetlands to the ecosystem, biotic and abiotic components, and human inhabitants, the very subsistence of these unique natural resources is under intimidation due to developmental activities, population pressure, and anthropogenic stress. Globally, the areal extent of wetland ecosystems ranges from 917 million hectares (m ha) to more than 1275 m ha with an estimated economic value of about USD 15 trillion a year. Overall, 1052 Sites in Europe; 289 Sites in Asia; 359 Sites in Africa; 175 Sites in South America; 211 Sites in North America; and 79 Sites in Oceania region have been recognized as per international recognition for designation to be handled under protected areas. It gives us an immense pleasure in presenting this comprehensive book on Ecosystem Analysis of Two Tropical Community Reservoirs of India. This book covers an extensive research on two significant wetlands of national importance of Central Gujarat, India, listed in ‘Asian Directory of Wetlands’, highlighting point and non-point sources of pollution, nutrient budget and recycling of nutrients in surface water and bottom sediments, planktons as indicators and markers of pollution, macrophytes as indicators of quality of wetlands, suitability of habitat for waterfowl conservation, and conservation and site-specific management strategies for sustainable use of biotic resources with recommendations and mitigating measures. We hope that this book will be of a great help to students, teachers, scientists, wetland conservationists, policy makers and government authorities, in enhancing their knowledge in the field of wetland ecology, biodiversity, conservation, restoration, and management for sustaining prevailing abiotic and biotic resources for better future.

Book excerpt: In all the developing countries, the vast natural resource have great potentials for the production of fish. Natural water resource are categorized on the basis of altitude, temperature and salinity. The different fish species have adopted as per water ecosystem. Out of identified about 22000 fish species, only 10% belongs to freshwater. Only 107 species have been found suitable as culturable. Hence, major chunk of fish are not cultured by man but used by him as food or other uses. It is therefore, the natural fisheries is very important for human being and proper management and legislation are needed to have the sustainable production. The text of the book is written in simple language so as understandable by scientists, extension workers, students and farmers. Book excerpt: This edited book provides a comprehensive and a reliable source of information on all major areas of diatom research. It addresses research advances in the key areas of diatom biology, morphology, systematics, phylogeny and ecology along with their interdisciplinary applications. Diatoms are the world’s most diverse group of algae populating the freshwater and marine ecosystems of the world. They are unicellular, photosynthetic, eukaryotes having ornate silicified cell walls. Diatoms contribute around 25% of annual global carbon fixation, which is more than all of the terrestrial rainforests combined. Diatoms underpin major aquatic food webs and drive global biogeochemical cycles and have several ecological and interdisciplinary applications. This book targets a wide range of audience including researchers, academicians, teachers and students of varied disciplines such as biology, environmental sciences, ecology, evolution, nanotechnology and other related disciplines. It is useful read for beginners as well as advanced researchers.

Furthermore, a detailed description of the ecological structure and function of the ecosystem of reservoirs is given. This book summarizes more than 20 years of research and development in Israel where more than 200 of these reservoirs are in operation. It includes both theoretical developments and practical experience gained by designers, operators and farmers. Potential geographic areas for the use of these reservoirs are the whole Mediterranean region, the Pacific coasts of both South and North America, the Atlantic coasts of Africa, the Middle East, and other regions suffering water shortage.

Book excerpt: Anemonefishes, one of the most popular and recognizable of fishes in the world, are much more than film characters; they are also emerging model organisms for studying the biology, ecology, and evolution of coral reef fishes. They are a group of 28 species often employed to study patterns and processes of social organization, intra- and inter-specific competition, sex change, mutualism, dispersal and connectivity of fish populations, habitat selection, pigment pattern formation, lifespan and predator-prey interactions. This multi-authored book covers all these areas and provides an update on the research done with this model and the perspective it opens for the future. Key Features Contains basic and up-to-date information on an emerging fish model Allows non-specialist readers to grasp the relevance of a wide research area Provides accurate and easy to access information on each of the 28 species Includes guidance for establishing a breeding colony Documents that anemonefishes are useful model organisms for ecological, developmental and climate research
