Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New theoretical results are presented for the characteristics and performance of an rf-linac-driven XUV free-electron laser. These results fall into two categories: (1) the dependence of the small-signal gain upon the transverse phase-space distribution of the electron beam and the geometry of the optical resonator; and (2) the optical spectral bandwidth. Within (1) we discuss, and present 3-d numerical calculations of, the small-signal gains expected for different phase-space distributions. The gain also varies substantially with the Rayleigh range of the optical resonator. Thus, for maximum small-signal gain, the design of the resonator is coupled to the electron beam characteristics. Within (2), we discuss conditions under which there is a spectral broadening of the optical pulse due to the development of sidebands. The basis of these studies are 1-d finite pulse, and 3-d periodic boundary condition, numerical computer codes.

Book excerpt: In an rf-linac-driven xuv free-electron laser oscillator, the gain depends on the details of the shape of the electron beam's phase-space distribution, particularly the distribution of electrons in the transverse (to the direction of propagation) position and velocity coordinates. This strong dependence occurs because the gain in this device is inhomogeneously broadened. Our previous theoretical studies have assumed that the transverse phase space distribution is a product of uncorrelated Gaussian functions. In the present work, we shall present the results of a theoretical study of the gain for non-Gaussian phase-space distributions. Such distributions arise either from a better representation of the electron beam from an rf-linac or from an emittance filter applied to the beam after the linac.
Book Synopsis Three-Dimensional Simulations of an XUV Free-Electron Laser by : John C. Goldstein

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operation of free electron lasers at long optical wavelengths (> or = 600 nm) has now been successfully demonstrated at several laboratories. To operate a free electron laser at shorter wavelengths imposes constraints on the brightness of the electron beam which are difficult to achieve. Until recently, it was perceived that only an electron storage ring could satisfy these beam requirements. However, our previous 1 D theoretical calculations revealed that modest improvements in the emittance available from rf linear accelerators would be sufficient to allow operation of an FEL in the XUV spectral range. A new theoretical results is presented for the design of a linac driven XUV FEL derived from an improved simulation model. The model is fully three dimensional in its treatment of the undulator magnetic field, the optical radiation field, and the motion of electrons in a finite emittance beam. Furthermore, the model computes self-consistently the motion of the electrons and the amplification, diffraction, and the refraction of the light within the undulator magnet. Propagation of the optical beam and reflection at the mirrors of the optical resonator are incorporated in the model so that a complete laser oscillator solution can be generated. The computed performance parameters of a particular XUV FEL oscillator design will be compared with the output of synchrotron radiation sources.

Book excerpt: Use of an rf linear accelerator as the electron source for a free-electron laser operating in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength range from 100 nm to at least as low as 50 nm appears feasible. Peak and average power outputs of greater than 100 kW and 50W, respectively, are predicted.

Book Synopsis Free-Electron Lasers in the Ultraviolet and X-Ray Regime by : Peter Schmüser
Download or read book Free-Electron Lasers in the Ultraviolet and X-Ray Regime written by Peter Schmüser and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main goal of the book is to provide a systematic and didactic approach to the physics and technology of free-electron lasers. Numerous figures are used for illustrating the underlying ideas and concepts and links to other fields of physics are provided. After an introduction to undulator radiation and the low-gain FEL, the one-dimensional theory of the high-gain FEL is developed in a systematic way. Particular emphasis is put on explaining and justifying the various assumptions and approximations that are needed to obtain the differential and integral equations governing the FEL dynamics. Analytical and numerical solutions are presented and important FEL parameters are defined, such as gain length, FEL bandwidth and saturation power. One of the most important features of a high-gain FEL, the formation of microbunches, is studied at length. The increase of gain length due to beam energy spread, space charge forces, and three-dimensional effects such as betatron oscillations and optical diffraction is analyzed. The mechanism of Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission is described theoretically and illustrated with numerous experimental results. Various methods of FEL seeding by coherent external radiation are introduced, together with experimental results. The world’s first soft X-ray FEL, the user facility FLASH at DESY, is described in some detail to give an impression of the complexity of such an accelerator-based light source. The last chapter is devoted to the new hard X-ray FELs which generate extremely intense radiation in the Angstrøm regime. The appendices contain supplementary material and more involved calculations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The high scienti?c interest in coherent X-ray light sources has stimulated world-wide e?orts in developing X-ray lasers. In this book a particularly promising approach is described, the free-electron laser (FEL), which is p- sued worldwide and holds the promise to deliver ultra-bright X-ray pulses of femtosecond duration. Other types of X-ray lasers are not discussed nor do we try a comparison of the relative virtues and drawbacks of di?erent concepts. The book has an introductory character and is written in the style of a universitytextbookforthemanynewcomerstothe?eldoffree-electronlasers, graduate students as well as accelerator physicists, engineers and technicians; it is not intended to be a scienti?c monograph for the experts in the ?eld. Building on lectures by one of us (J. R.) at the CERN Accelerator School, and motivated by the positive response to a series of seminars on “FEL t- ory for pedestrians”, given by P. S. within the framework of the Academic Training Program at DESY, we have aimed at presenting the theory of the low-gainandthehigh-gainFELinaclearandconcisemathematicallanguage. Particular emphasis is put on explaining and justifying the assumptions and approximations that are needed to obtain the di?erential equations descr- ing the FEL dynamics. Although we have tried our best to be “simple”, the mathematical derivations are certainly not always as simple as one would like them to be. However, we are not aware of any easier approach to the FEL theory. Some of the more involved calculations are put into the appendices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent developments in accelerator technology and the optical guiding property of the Free Electron Laser (FEL) radiation indicate that the RF linacs may be a strong contender for driving high energy power FEL amplifiers. We discuss two RF linac driven FEL configurations: the Master Scillator Power Amplifier (MOPA) and the Single Stage Power Amplifier (SSPA). Our numerical results are obtained using the Source Dependent Expansion (SDE) method in the computer SHERA. The SDE method and the code SHERA are discussed and illustrations of the MOPA and SSPA configurations presented.
