Book excerpt: This important book provides up-to-date information on a series of topical issues relating to the approach to minimal residual disease in breast cancer patients. It first explains how the study of minimal residual disease and circulating and disseminated tumor cells (CTCs/DTCs) can assist in the understanding of breast cancer metastasis. A series of chapters then discuss the various technologies available for the detection and characterization of CTCs and DTCs, pinpointing their merits and limitations. Detailed consideration is given to the relevance of CTCs and DTCs, and their detection, to clinical research and practice. The role of other blood-based biomarkers is also addressed, and the closing chapters debate the challenges facing drug and biomarker co-development and the use of CTCs for companion diagnostic development. This book will be of interest and assistance to all who are engaged in the modern management of breast cancer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Normal and Malignant Cell Growth is a compendium of papers from the "Proceedings of the Third Cancer Training Grant" of the University of Chicago that deals with the processes associated with malignant neoplasia, as well as the cell proliferation kinetics of normal tissues. One paper presents the techniques used in the study on the proliferation kinetics of hemopoietic stem cells, suggesting that the hemopoietic stem cell population is not homogenous but consists of a "primitive pluripotential stem cell." A series of experiments at the Brookhaven National Laboratory investigates the relationship of cell survival, specifically that of stem cells, to the survival of the irradiated test animal. One result of the experiment shows a rapid migration of a number of stem cells from shielded marrow into unshielded marrow at the pressure of a rapid circulating pool. The numbers of stem cells are somewhat dependent on the dose given to the unshielded marrow, and are greater with the greater dose. Another paper also investigates the four methods that are used in the study of cellular kinetics in human tumors. This compendium can prove helpful for biochemists, micro-biologists, cellular researchers, and academicians involved in the study of cellular biology, physiology or oncology.

This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As was shown in the first two volumes of this series, great strides have been made in identifying many of the agents or classes of substances responsible for carcinogenesis and in delineating their interactions with the cell. Clearly, the aim of such studies is that, once identified, these agents can be eliminated from the environment. Yet, despite these advances and the elimination of some important carcinogenic agents, one major problem exists. It is a constant monitor of all oncologic study and diminishes the importance of every experiment and of every clinical observation. As we noted earlier, that problem is our inability to define the malignant cell. It is through studies of the fundamental biology of tumors that we seek this definition. A vast amount of information has been gathered which describes what this cell does and-to a lesser extent-how it does it. But the why evades us. We have been unable to define the malignant cell, save in broad terms by comparing it to its normal counterpart. The major problem appears to be that the malignant cell does so much. It is a chimera, mystifyingly composed of normal activities and structures, of phenotypic schizophrenia with embryonic, fetal, and adult charac teristics and, occasionally, a hint of an unclassifiable capacity unique to malignant cells.
