Book excerpt: Tests to date demonstrate that metallic fuel for advanced liquid metal reactors performs well, is easily reprocessed and refabricated and provides inherent reactor safety within an economic design. The behavior and performance of metallic fuel is key to the demonstration of the Integral Fast Reactor (IFR) concept at Argonne National Laboratory. Since 1985, more than 40 assemblies of experimental fuel in addition to the standard metallic driver fuel for Experimental Breeder Reactor 2 (EBR-2)have been irradiated; several more continue to be designed and fabricated. Results have characterized the influence of a wide range of fabrication, design and material variables upon irradiation behavior throughout the fuel lifetime under normal and upset conditions including operation with breached cladding. Results of test, both in- and out-of-reactor, indicate that metallic fuel is readily and economically fabricated, capable of achieving high exposure and long reactor residence times, and possesses unique and promising safety features. 9 refs., 6 figs.

Subsequently, the electrometallurgical treatment of this fuel was demonstrated. Advanced metallic fuels are now investigated for increased performance, including ultra-high burnup and actinide burning. Advances include additives to mitigate the fuel/cladding chemical interaction and uranium alloys that combine Mo, Ti and Zr to improve alloy performance. The impacts of the advances--on fabrication, waste streams, electrorefining, etc.--are found to be minimal and beneficial. Owing to extensive research literature and computational methods, only a modest effort is required to complete their development.

The addition of recently obtained swelling data on tubular fuel elements to the previously accumulated information has prompted a refinement to the swelling model. Analysis of data for the N-outer tube, the N-inner tube and the K-single tube geometries has led to separate empirical expressions for each of the three shapes in place of the single expression formerly used for all geometries. Within Metallic Fuel Development, the irradiation of thorium fuel continued. Three tubular elements containing 2.35 wt% U235 and 1 wt% Zr have reached an exposure of 5200 Mwd/ton in the ETR P-7 facility. Weight measurements indicate that the elements have undergone 0.8% volume increase. This figure is very close to the theoretical minimum volume expansion expected from fission product production.

The FFTF facility is converting to metallic fuel; however, FFTF also maintains a considerable US program in oxide fuels. In addition, generic programs are continuing in steam generator testing, materials development, and, with international cooperation, aqueous reprocessing. Design studies are carried out in conjunction with the IFR technology development program. In summary, the US maintains an active development program in Liquid Metal Reactor technology, and new directions in reactor safety are central to the program.
