Book Synopsis Solar and Space Physics by : National Research Council
Download or read book Solar and Space Physics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-08-26 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the interior of the Sun, to the upper atmosphere and near-space environment of Earth, and outward to a region far beyond Pluto where the Sun's influence wanes, advances during the past decade in space physics and solar physics-the disciplines NASA refers to as heliophysics-have yielded spectacular insights into the phenomena that affect our home in space. Solar and Space Physics, from the National Research Council's (NRC's) Committee for a Decadal Strategy in Solar and Space Physics, is the second NRC decadal survey in heliophysics. Building on the research accomplishments realized during the past decade, the report presents a program of basic and applied research for the period 2013-2022 that will improve scientific understanding of the mechanisms that drive the Sun's activity and the fundamental physical processes underlying near-Earth plasma dynamics, determine the physical interactions of Earth's atmospheric layers in the context of the connected Sun-Earth system, and enhance greatly the capability to provide realistic and specific forecasts of Earth's space environment that will better serve the needs of society. Although the recommended program is directed primarily at NASA and the National Science Foundation for action, the report also recommends actions by other federal agencies, especially the parts of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration charged with the day-to-day (operational) forecast of space weather. In addition to the recommendations included in this summary, related recommendations are presented in this report.

Book Synopsis Dynamics of the Sun and Stars by : Mário J. P. F. G. Monteiro
Download or read book Dynamics of the Sun and Stars written by Mário J. P. F. G. Monteiro and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-18 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are the proceedings of a meeting celebrating Michael Thompson's seminal work on solar and stellar physics, as well as his major contributions to the development of the National Center for Atmospheric Research. The meeting also marked Michael J. Thompson’s untimely death in October 2018. Michael played a key role in the development of helioseismology and its application to the study of the structure and dynamics of the solar interior, and he provided a strong foundation for the extension of seismic studies for other stars. After focusing for several years on more administrative activities, he was returning to leading the seismic studies of solar interior rotation and he was deeply involved in the understanding of the dynamics of the core of stars, when his life was tragically lost. The conference focused on dynamical aspects of the sun and stars, based on the large amount of data available on solar and stellar oscillations, and the extensive and detailed modelling now becoming feasible. Combining observations, seismic analysis, and modelling the meeting and this book serve as a fitting memorial to a close colleague and friend, much missed.
Book Synopsis Heliophysics by : Carolus J. Schrijver
Download or read book Heliophysics written by Carolus J. Schrijver and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the past few centuries, our awareness of the couplings between the Sun's variability and the Earth's environment, and perhaps even its climate, has been advancing at an ever increasing rate. The Sun is a magnetically variable star and for planets with intrinsic magnetic fields, planets with atmospheres, or planets like Earth with both, there are profound consequences and impacts. Today, the successful increase in knowledge of the workings of the Sun's magnetic activity, the recognition of the many physical processes that couple the realm of the Sun to our galaxy, and the insights into the interaction of the solar wind and radiation with the Earth's magnetic field, atmosphere and climate system have tended to differentiate and insularize the solar heliospheric and geo-space sub-disciplines of the physics of the local cosmos"--Provided by publisher.
Book Synopsis The Sun’s Surface and Subsurface by : Jean-Pierre Rozelot
Download or read book The Sun’s Surface and Subsurface written by Jean-Pierre Rozelot and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-01-11 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composed of a set of lectures and tutorial reviews, this book stems from a summer school devoted to the gravitational aspects of the sun and their geophysical consequences. Contribitions elaborate on the gravitational distortions of the sun which can be used to gain some knowledge of the sun's interior and surface phenomena but which also influences the sun's irradience and thus ultimately the earth's climate. Last but not least, it is shown that these small distortions constitute a formidable challenge to solar astrometry, and the final part of the book describes the observational difficulties in defining unequivocally the solar diameter.
Book Synopsis The Heliosphere through the Solar Activity Cycle by : A. Balogh
Download or read book The Heliosphere through the Solar Activity Cycle written by A. Balogh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding how the Sun changes though its 11-year sunspot cycle and how these changes affect the vast space around the Sun – the heliosphere – has been one of the principal objectives of space research since the advent of the space age. This book presents the evolution of the heliosphere through an entire solar activity cycle. The last solar cycle (cycle 23) has been the best observed from both the Earth and from a fleet of spacecraft. Of these, the joint ESA-NASA Ulysses probe has provided continuous observations of the state of the heliosphere since 1990 from a unique vantage point, that of a nearly polar orbit around the Sun. Ulysses’ results affect our understanding of the heliosphere from the interior of the Sun to the interstellar medium - beyond the outer boundary of the heliosphere. Written by scientists closely associated with the Ulysses mission, the book describes and explains the many different aspects of changes in the heliosphere in response to solar activity. In particular, the authors describe the rise in solar activity from the last minimum in solar activity in 1996 to its maximum in 2000 and the subsequent decline in activity.

Book Synopsis The Magnetic Universe by : Günther Rüdiger
Download or read book The Magnetic Universe written by Günther Rüdiger and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-03-06 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetism is one of the most pervasive features of the Universe, with planets, stars and entire galaxies all having associated magnetic fields. All of these fields are generated by the motion of electrically conducting fluids, the so-called dynamo effect. The precise details of what drives the motion, and indeed what the fluid consists of, differ widely though. In this work the authors draw upon their expertise in geophysical and astrophysical MHD to explore some of these phenomena, and describe the similarities and differences between different magnetized objects. They also explain why magnetic fields are crucial in the formation of the stars, and discuss promising experiments currently being designed to study some of the relevant physics in the laboratory. This interdisciplinary approach makes the book appealing to a wide audience in physics, astrophysics and geophysics.
