Book excerpt: The Status of the Interior Columbia Basin is a summary of the scientific findings from the Interior Columbia Basin Ecosystem Management Project. The Interior Columbia Basin includes some 145 million acres within the northwestern United States. Over 75 million acres of this area are managed by the USDA Forest Service or the USDI Bureau of Land Management. A framework for ecosystem management is described that assumes the broad purpose is to maintain the integrity of ecosystems over time and space. An integrated scientific assessment links landscape, aquatic, terrestrial, social, and economic characterizations to describe the biophysical and social systems. Ecosystem conditions within the Basin have changed substantially within the last 100 years. The status of ecosystems is described in terms of current conditions and trends under three broadly defined management options. The scientific information brought forward will be used in decision-making, and may potentially amend Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management plans within the Basin. The information highlighted here represents an integrated view of biophysical and socioeconomic elements at a scale never before attempted. The risks and opportunities are characterized in the broad context of the Basin for managers and the public to use as a foundation for discussion about future management.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Projecting Population Change in the Interior Columbia River Basin Management of ecosystems on Federal lands takes place within a social context that, like biophysical settings, is constantly changing. Impacts of potential alternative ecosystem management strategies will differ depending on the size, location, and expectations of the human population. Likewise, these characteristics are associated with the location, type, and intensity of impacts on biophysical components. Manage ment of ecosystems requires us to project the human population for a biologically significant timeframe, although doing so is fraught with uncertainty. By attempting to identify likely high and low population-change scenarios, we can avoid some of this uncertainty; and by indicating that we are primarily interested in orders of magnitude of change rather than precise figures, we focus discussion on possible futures rather than the accuracy of the projections. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews literature on the influence of nonmarket amenity resources on population migration. Literature reviewed includes migration and demographic studies; urban and regional economics studies of amenities in labor markets, retirement migration, and firm location decisions; nonmarket valuation studies using hedonic price analysis of amenity resource values; land use change studies; and studies of the economic development influence of forest preservation. A synthesis of the literature finds that the influence of amenities is consistently shown to be a positive factor contributing to population growth in urban and rural areas characterized by proximity to public forest lands. Beyond this broad finding, however, little research has been conducted at an appropriate scale to be directly useful in forest management and planning decisions. Areas for further research are identified.
