Book excerpt: Laboratory studies of sediment leaching are being conducted at the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. The purpose of these studies is to develop laboratory tests and data interpretation algorithms for predicting leachate quality in confined disposal facilities (CDFs) for dredged material. Leachate quality predictions are needed for evaluation of potential impacts of leachate seepage on foundation soils and groundwater. Two types of laboratory leach tests are under investigation, batch and column. A sequential batch leach test is being developed to provide a short-term laboratory test that describes the distribution of contaminants between aqueous and solid phases as sediment solids are exposed to increasing amounts of water. Column leach tests are being developed as laboratory-scale physical models of contaminant leaching in a CDF. Significant progress has been made in the development of the sequential batch leach test. Book excerpt: Contaminated dredged material is sometimes placed in confined disposal facilities (CDFs) where the potential for movement of contaminants to groundwater and surrounding surface water by leaching is an important environmental concern. Column leach tests have been developed as laboratory-scale physical models of contaminant leaching in a CDF that include advective-dispersive and other mass transfer effects. Column leach tests are recommended for predicting leachate quality in CDFs containing estuarine dredged material leached by low-ionic strength water. Under the influence of decreasing ionic strength, contaminant release from estuarine dredged material is complicated by destabilization of the sediment colloidal system. These effects are better predicted with the column leach test described in this report than with the sequential batch leach test previously recommended for leach testing of freshwater sediments. This report describes procedures for conducting column leach tests and provides guidance on interpretation of results for estuarine sediments. Mathematical formulation of sorption descriptors that account for salt washout effect is also described.

In addition, several tests were run using potassium chloride amendments to the contaminated sediment prior to capping to determine if this salt would be a suitable tracer. Dissolved oxygen depletion and ammoniumsion, orthophosphate-phosphorus release was also an effective tracer. Use of managanese or potassium chloride as tracers proved ineffective. The physical-chemical processes governing leaching were identified and described mathematically. Various approaches to describing contaminant transfer form the dredged material solids to the aqueous phase were considered, including equilibrium concepts, dissolution kinetics, intraparticle diffusion, and film effects. The approach recommended for application to dredged material uses an operationally defined distribution (partitioning) coefficient to relate aqueous phase concentration to solid phase concentration. This approach assumes equilibrium within the dredged material between solid and aqueous phases. The equilibrium approach assumes that interphase transfer kinetics are fast compared to the percolation rate of water through dredged material. A sequential batch leach test is recommended for obtaining distribution coefficients, and a pressurized column test using divided-flow (double-ring) parameters is recommended as a physical model of reduced scale for verifying the distribution coefficients obtained in batch tests. The design concepts for the laboratory tests are preliminary, and additional evaluation on the basis of actual test results will be needed before the procedures recommended can be adopted.

Emphasis is placed on explanation of basic concepts concerning, and factors influencing, sediment contaminant bioaccumulation and bioavailability. The paper presents several numerical methods for assessing bioaccumulation, including a simple method for estimating theoretical bioaccumulation potential (TBP) from sediment chemistry for neutral organic chemicals. Methods are also given for projecting contaminant concentrations in organism tissues when steady state is achieved, based on laboratory or field exposures to contaminated sediments. These assessments are presented in the context of the US Environmental Protection Agency's tiered testing approach for dredged material evaluation. The various numerical methods for bioaccumulation assessment are illustrated and compared using step-by-step example calculations with hypothetical and actual data.
