Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to curbing monopoly power in stock markets Engaging and informative, Regulating Competition in Stock Markets skillfully analyzes the impact of the recent global financial crisis on health and happiness, and uses this opportunity to put regulatory systems in perspective. Happiness is lost because of emotional and physical health deterioration resulting from the crisis. Therefore, the authors conclude that financial crisis prevention should be the focus of public policy. This book is the most comprehensive study so far on potential risks to the stock market, especially various forms of market manipulation that lead to mania and eventual crisis. Based on litigation cases from international stock markets, and borrowing multidisciplinary findings in the fields of finance, economics, accounting, media studies, criminology, legal studies, psychology, and medicine, this book is the first to provide thorough micro-level regulatory proposals rooted in financial reality. By focusing on securities trading, they apply antitrust measures to limiting monopolistic power that is used for the manipulation of investors' perception and monopolistic profit. These proposals are quantifiable, adjustable, inexpensive, and can be easily implemented by any securities regulating agency for real-time oversight and daily operations. The recommendations found here are intended to improve the fairness and transparency of the financial markets, thereby perfecting the market competition, protecting investors, stabilizing the market, and preventing crises Explores how avoiding crises can to contribute to a more scientific, health aware, and civilized economic and social development Written by a team of authors who have extensive experience in this dynamic field, including Nobel Laureate Lawrence R. Klein Since the founding of the first, organized stock exchange in Amsterdam 400 years ago, no systematic economic research results on stock markets have been implemented in stock market regulation around the world. Regulating Competition in Stock Markets aims to fill this void.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book underscores the complexity of the equity markets, the challenges they face, and the fact that they are still a work in process. Three interacting forces drive market change: competition, technology change, and regulatory change. The markets have one major objective in particular to achieve: the delivery of accurate price discovery for both traders and the broader market. Are we getting it? Are competition, technology, and regulation acting together to improve market quality, or are they adding to the complexity of the markets and making accurate price discovery harder to achieve? The difficulty of addressing these issues and reaching a consensus regarding public policy is reflected in the diverse opinions expressed in this book. From an institutional perspective, the volume’s contributors highlight the interconnectedness of all aspects of the internal and external environment within which exchange organizations act. Equity Markets in Transition underscores how technological evolution and recent regulatory changes have influenced the business, and how these developments have opened new possibilities for exchange organizations and for equity markets as a whole, including such issues as the impact of equity markets on job creation. The book combines both a theoretical and a practical approach. Part I presents a theoretical overview of the international equity market business, including an overall description of the value chain of stock trading that includes deep dives on every decisive step. Part II contains contributions from various business specialists who have specific practical and academic knowledge of the different steps. Equity Markets in Transition represents a unique combination of theoretical and practical analysis that offers first-hand insights on all relevant interactions and interrelations among the various parts of the exchange business, with an emphasis on facilitating analysis of the status quo and of emerging trends regarding business models, regulation, and the development of the competitor, customer and investor sides.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dramatic changes in information and telecommunications technologies have transformed U.S. financial markets in the 1980s and 1990s. This book examines the growth of mutual funds and derivatives markets and the decline of banks and explores implications of those developments for financial stability and regulatory policy. One of the book's central conclusions is that the current system of bank regulation is out of step with today's financial realities and needs to be substantially changed. Franklin Edwards asserts that the best way to increase the freedom of financial institutions to compete while making the financial system less vulnerable to excessive risk-taking by individual financial institutions is to adopt a system of collateralized banking. He shows how adopting such a system will result in a more stable financial system, both by reducing our reliance on government to maintain financial soundness and by enhancing the effectiveness of private markets in controlling institutional risk taking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. stock market has been transformed over the last twenty-five years. Once a market in which human beings traded at human speeds, it is now an electronic market pervaded by algorithmic trading, conducted at speeds nearing that of light. High-frequency traders participate in a large portion of all transactions, and a significant minority of all trade occurs on alternative trading systems known as “dark pools.” These developments have been widely criticized, but there is no consensus on the best regulatory response to these dramatic changes. The New Stock Market offers a comprehensive new look at how these markets work, how they fail, and how they should be regulated. Merritt B. Fox, Lawrence R. Glosten, and Gabriel V. Rauterberg describe stock markets’ institutions and regulatory architecture. They draw on the informational paradigm of microstructure economics to highlight the crucial role of information asymmetries and adverse selection in explaining market behavior, while examining a wide variety of developments in market practices and participants. The result is a compelling account of the stock market’s regulatory framework, fundamental institutions, and economic dynamics, combined with an assessment of its various controversies. The New Stock Market covers a wide range of issues including the practices of high-frequency traders, insider trading, manipulation, short selling, broker-dealer practices, and trading venue fees and rebates. The book illuminates both the existing regulatory structure of our equity trading markets and how we can improve it.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: MA, Yale University, language: English, abstract: International Finance Center (IFC) are an integral part of the modern international financial economy. One of its basic components is the availability of developed national financial markets, actively interacting with similar markets in other countries. As an example, the United States can lead the UK, Japan, in economic development which play an important role the financial markets, and the major cities of these countries (New York, London, Tokyo), are the major international financial centers. Cities can be seen as the gateway to the global economy. They are important for the functioning of both national and global economy, since they are concentrated huge financial, informational and intellectual resources, based most of the major industrial, commercial, financial and service companies, specialized credit and financial institutions and banks. In addition to traditional MFC in the last decades of the 20th century a number of new financial centers competing for the role of international. The acceleration of globalization and especially its financial component, led to an increase in strength and influence regional financial centers, in particular, such as Hong Kong (Hong Kong). The financial market of China, which is traditionally considered to be emerging financial markets have long been a mature international financial centers that have an impact not only on the regional economy, but also in the distribution of global capital flows. The study of the functioning of the MFC, their development trends is the most important area for the understanding of the new global economy, its characteristics and movement mechanisms. At the same time identifying new trends in the development of Asian financial centers, particularly their inclusion in the competition for international corporations have mastered the financial market, is both scientific and practical interest. This makes it possible to identify local features of financial globalization as a result of the connection and the active development of the Asia-Pacific Economic Space with new financial centers, show their role, prospects and competitiveness in the global economy. Of particular importance is the study of the development of Chinese financial market, especially given the fact that the IMF has recognized the yuan a freely usable currency, reflecting the expanding role of China in world trade, a significant increase in the use of the yuan in the international scale and the growth of operations with it.

Book excerpt: The structure and operations of the US equity markets have evolved dramatically in recent decades with the advent of major technology and regulatory changes. Nothing short of a groundbreaking shift has occurred in the securities industry as the transition has been made from predominantly manual, human intermediated trading to predominantly electronic trading. By many measures, commission, spreads and market impact costs have been dramatically reduced in recent years. But does that mean that market quality has improved? That is the key question addressed in this book, titled after the Baruch College Conference, “The Quality of Our Financial Markets: Taking Stock of Where We Stand.” Featuring contributions from a distinguished panel of practitioners, academicians, and regulators, this volume offers a penetrating and timely account of the most current issues in market quality, covering such topics as high-frequency trading; the Flash Crash of May 6th, 2010; dark pools; lit pools; fragmentation; disruptive and advanced technologies. And, very significantly, it takes a close look at the impact and influence of regulation. The Zicklin School of Business Financial Markets Series presents the insights emerging from a sequence of conferences hosted by the Zicklin School at Baruch College for industry professionals, regulators, and scholars. Much more than historical documents, the transcripts from the conferences are edited for clarity, perspective and context; material and comments from subsequent interviews with the panelists and speakers are integrated for a complete thematic presentation. Each book is focused on a well delineated topic, but all deliver broader insights into the quality and efficiency of the U.S. equity markets and the dynamic forces changing them.
