Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent American Socialism I have tried first to understand American socialism, and then to present it in such manner, that others may likewise understand it. I have endeavored to let the parties concerned speak for themselves, as far as possible. Newspapers and magazines are full Of arguments against socialism, but it is not plain that the foe is always known. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Socialism in the United States Since the first appearance of this book (October, 1903), four editions of it have been printed without any change in the text. But now, when my publishers are about to send it out into the world for the fifth time, I feel that the task of subjecting it to a thorough revision can no longer be delayed. There are several reasons why such revision should be undertaken at this time. The last six years have been years of uncommon interest and eventfulness for the socialist movement of this country, and no history of the movement can claim to be complete without at least a brief record of these events. The task of bringing the narrative down to date has made necessary the addition of an entirely new and somewhat extended chapter. An attempt has also been made in this edition to analyze the character of the American socialist movement and to forecast its probable future. When the "History of Socialism in the United States" was first written, socialism was only beginning to gain a foothold in this country, and the organized socialist movement was barely in its formative stage. The Socialist Party, which, to-day represents the bulk of all organized socialist activities in the United States, was only two years old. Its following was small, and its policy was somewhat unsettled. During the last six years, the party has almost doubled the number of its voters and trebled its enrolled membership. It has largely extended and perfected its organization, and has evolved more fixt and efficient methods of action. Since its organization in 1901, the Socialist Party has held three conventions and has passed through two national political campaigns. Its mission and place in the politics of the country have become more definitely settled. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: During the Cold War it became a dirty word in the United States, but "socialism" runs like a red thread through the nation's history, an integral part of its political consciousness since the founding of the republic. In this unapologetic corrective to today's collective amnesia, John Nichols calls for the proud return of socialism in American life. He recalls the reforms lauded by Founding Father Tom Paine; the presence of Karl Marx's journalism in American letters; the left leanings of founders of the Republican Party; the socialist politics of Helen Keller; the progressive legacy of figures like Chaplin and Einstein. Now in an updated edition, The "S" Word makes a case for socialist ideas as an indispensable part of American heritage. A new final chapter considers the recent signs of a leftward sea change in American politics in the face of increasing and historic levels of inequality. Today, corporations-like other rich "individuals"-pay fewer taxes than they did in the 1950s, while our infrastructure crumbles and the seas rise. The "S" Wordaddresses a nation that can no longer afford to put capital before people.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism and the American Spirit A noted author has urged the appointment in some leading university of a professorship of Amer ica. He would like to see there one man whose spe cial business it should be to teach the students that there is such a reality as American thought, that there are certain principles which belong to the Amer ican government, that there are certain feelings Which are experienced by none but an American, such cus toms as American customs, and that there has grown up a social order Which is distinctively Ameri can. Rev. Dr. Hale repudiates, of course, the no tion that science is one thing in Europe and another in the United States. American economics has no more existence than Belgian physics or Spanish chem istry. But the main point is beyond dispute. There is a social order which is distinctively American. It has been woven on the roaring loom of time by the American spirit. In these days When, as Mr. George J acob Holyoake has said, the social question is not only in the air, it fills the air, I have thought that a place is still open in an abundant literature for a discussion of the American answer to socialism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Communism in America 1/ In this sense, it might be suggested the subject would be more properly treated under the more comprehensive term Socialism, which leads to a further word concerning these two expressions, Communism and Socialism, partly in justification of the title of the present essay, partly to avoid sub sequent confusion. The Socialists themselves dep recate the application of the term Communism to their doctrines. While defending the word from the unjust odium usually attaching to it, they main tain (on what slender grounds will appear in the sequel) that they do not advocate any extinction of the right of private property in the communistic sense.
