Thanks to the advances in mathematical modeling, measurement devices and computer capabilities, well testing continues to be a growing subject. The information obtained from well testing is analysed with the purpose of obtaining important reservoir information useful for hydrocarbon field management. The intricate mathematical models developed from numerous researchers during past and recent years attempt to show the benefit of mathematics in well test interpretation. This book revolves around the TDS technique. This revolutionary method is strongly based in the logarithm pressure derivative versus time log-log plot. It is applied to specific regions, features and flow regimes, which can be easily identified in the pressure derivative curve so several analytical expressions are obtained for a practical, easy and exact way of conducting a well test interpretation. This tool is too powerful and also allows verifying most of the estimated parameters. All the known commercial software include it without referring to it as the original name. During several years of providing training to several engineers and companies in Latin America, the author has noticed that whoever knows and uses the TDS technique will take it as its favorite interpretation method. Then, they take the outcomes from TDS to computer software to set the bounds for a faster and less risky model. The book contains the latest applications of the TDS technique to several important reservoir/fluid scenarios. Several step-by-step examples are given for a better understanding of the interpretation methodology in such important scenarios as heavy oil, conductive faults, enhanced oil recovery, fractured wells and naturally fractured reservoirs, among others.

Book excerpt: The TDS technique is a practical, easy, and powerful tool for well test interpretation. It uses characteristic features and points found on the pressure derivative versus time plot, so that reservoir parameters can be easily calculated by using several analytic expressions. Most calculations can be verified more than once and applied to systems where the conventional straight-line method has no applications. This book deals with well tests run in elongated systems, partially completed/penetrated wells, multirate tests, hydraulically fractured wells, interference tests, and naturally fractured reservoirs. This technique is used in all commercial well-testing software. Its use is the panacea for well test interpretation and can also be extended to rate-transient analysis, although not shown here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once a natural gas or oil well is drilled, and it has been verified that commercially viable, it must be "completed" to allow for the flow of petroleum or natural gas out of the formation and up to the surface. This process includes: casing, pressure and temperature evaluation, and the proper instillation of equipment to ensure an efficient flow out of the well. In recent years, these processes have been greatly enhanced by new technologies. Advanced Well Completion Engineering summarizes and explains these advances while providing expert advice for deploying these new breakthrough engineering systems. The book has two themes: one, the idea of preventing damage, and preventing formation from drilling into an oil formation to putting the well introduction stage; and two, the utilization of nodal system analysis method, which optimizes the pressure distribution from reservoir to well head, and plays the sensitivity analysis to design the tubing diameters first and then the production casing size, so as to achieve whole system optimization. With this book, drilling and production engineers should be able to improve operational efficiency by applying the latest state of the art technology in all facets of well completion during development drilling-completion and work over operations. - One of the only books devoted to the key technologies for all major aspects of advanced well completion activities. - Unique coverage of all aspects of well completion activities based on 25 years in the exploration, production and completion industry. - Matchless in-depth technical advice for achieving operational excellence with advance solutions.

Book excerpt: This book is designed to be a technical reference for engineers and technicians who interpret well tests. For each case examined, it describes the most suitable interpretation methods, such as traditional methods, type curves, computer-generated type curves, and interpretation using derivatives. It cites the equations used to interpret results, while avoiding detailed mathematical discussions. Nevertheless, as numerous references are provided, those who wish to can trace the solutions back to their origins. The book also indicates the conditions under which different methods are useful, and is illustrated with a large number of figures and practical examples. The text shows how the interpretation of a well test varies according to the type of reservoir limits (e.g., faults, channels, secant faults, constant pressure limits, closed reservoir, etc.), the well reservoir configuration (e.g., partial penetration wells, inclined wells, artificially fractured wells, horizontal wells, injection wells, etc.), and the nature of more complex reservoirs (fissured reservoirs, two-layered reservoirs). It indicates which methods to use when the fluid in a well is a gas or a polyphasic fluid. Lastly, it deals with tests applied to multiple wells, including interference tests and pulse tests.Contents: Principle: 1. Principles of well testing. 2. Wellbore storage. 3. Skin. Book excerpt: In recent years, production decline-curve analysis has become the most widely used tool in the industry for oil and gas reservoir production analysis. However, most curve analysis is done by computer today, promoting a "black-box" approach to engineering and leaving engineers with little background in the fundamentals of decline analysis. Advanced Production Decline Analysis and Application starts from the basic concept of advanced production decline analysis, and thoroughly discusses several decline methods, such as Arps, Fetkovich, Blasingame, Agarwal-Gardner, NPI, transient, long linear flow, and FMB. A practical systematic introduction to each method helps the reservoir engineer understand the physical and mathematical models, solve the type curves and match up analysis, analyze the processes and examples, and reconstruct all the examples by hand, giving way to master the fundamentals behind the software. An appendix explains the nomenclature and major equations, and as an added bonus, online computer programs are available for download. - Understand the most comprehensive and current list of decline methods, including Arps, Fetkovich, Blasingame, and Agarwal-Gardner - Gain expert knowledge with principles, processes, real-world cases and field examples - Includes online downloadable computer programs on Blasingame decline type curves and normalized pseudo-pressure of gas wells
