Book excerpt: Selah, an obscure term in the Psalter and Habakkuk, has commonly been the subject of discussion regarding its meaning and use. Many 19th century scholars have spent countless hours, and devoted many pages, to remove Selah from obscurity. Only now have we revealed a previously undiscovered clue in Selah's use during the Second Temple period due to 20th century archaeological finds. The present work approaches each text with a "whole picture" perspective to examine each psalm and Selah occurrence in its immediate context. Many scholars believed that Selah was simply an instruction for the musical director, but new evidence from the Dead Sea Scrolls suggests that it was a live term in the Second Temple period.
Book Synopsis Judgment and Salvation by : Dustin G. Burlet
Download or read book Judgment and Salvation written by Dustin G. Burlet and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contends the text of the Noachian deluge narrative categorically underscores all God did to preserve life in spite of the disaster. Despite the picture of devastation that the narrative depicts, the prominent emphasis of the text is on deliverance and redemption, i.e., salvation, not judgment. The focus of the Genesis flood is acutely bent towards God's salvific rather than punitive purposes. The arc of salvation within the flood narrative can be broken down into two main ideas. Firstly, God's intention for creation is not thwarted, and, secondly, God commits himself to his intentions of creation. God's intention for creation can be stated thus: the establishment of order via covenant showing the sanctity of human life and the upholding of all life. This involves, in particular, humanity as his image bearers, including the lex talionis (life-for-life) principle.

Download or read book One LORD written by ray brown and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-01-13 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manuscript is birthed out of my personal Bible study and inquiry into the identity and characteristics of God, specifically what I sometimes call the plurality and the oneness nature of God. For he is indubitably both. This book attempts to objectively examine the primary doctrines that have plagued and fragmented Christianity, and especially the man-made dogma and tenets which divide Pentecostal Christianity. The emphasis throughout is explicitly upon God's desire for the unity of the Spirit and upon his own indivisible character and essence. A distinct significance is placed upon the high priestly prayer of the LORD Jesus Christ for all of Christianity: that we not only be made One with him in the Father (by the Holy Spirit) but that we be made progressively "perfect in One" (re. John 17:21-23). It is my hope that this work awakens an awareness in all of God's people of his grief and displeasure at our divisive posture and alienating attitudes toward those who believe differently than we do. Categorically, I address the doctrines of the oneness and trinity of God and the differences we have concerning water baptism that have so sorrowfully and shamefully separated us. My hope and my prayer for this book is that it be a unifying catalyst in the heart of the individual believer to draw us closer as the body of Christ, his Church, one Christian at a time. My aspiration in Christ is to accentuate the gravity and the urgency that the LORD Jesus Christ does not find us in such a state of glaring (and disgraceful) disunity at his coming. Someone has to say it, and this book, without apology, does just that.
Download or read book Disruptive Inclusion written by Jen Smith and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2024-03-31 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Christian adult learning? What questions are raised when Christian faith and learning meet? Many existing approaches primarily address issues such as curriculum content or teacher character. Building on the work of John Hull, Disruptive Inclusion approaches the intersection of theology and pedagogy suggesting that the christianness of Christian adult learning is best expressed by the posture adopted by learners, not only via what is taught and by whom. Specifically, Jen Smith claims that a key to Christian adult learning posture is how learners include the unexpected and disruptive in their learning. Drawing on key resources, such as the biblical narrative, Christian tradition, liturgy, community and her own experiences, Jen takes us on a deeply personal and practical journey into disruptive inclusion and invites us to re-imagine what effective Christian adult learning might look like in the classroom, pulpit and online learning settings.

Download or read book Follow the Way written by Lars Coburn and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-04-03 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Follow the Way is about how the virtues of humility, gratitude, and simplicity impact prayer and a relationship with God. We learn these virtues from the life of Jesus. Like the dust Jesus kicked up stuck to the sweaty disciples as they followed close behind, our habits and practices of listening, being, and seeing stick on those following us. Humility teaches us to listen. A relationship cannot be a one-sided conversation--humility reminds us to quiet our own voice enough to recognize the voice of God in our lives. Gratitude teaches us to be present. A relationship cannot be based solely on the past or the future--we need to recognize God in the present, in ordinary moments of life. Simplicity teaches us to see. A relationship cannot have clarity without each understanding the other--we need to clear out the noise and interference in order to recognize God's will and plan for our life. Humility, gratitude, and simplicity empower us to pray intimately and experience an intimate relationship where we truly know God, not just stuff about God.

Book Synopsis Women, Compulsion, Modernity by : Jennifer L. Fleissner
Download or read book Women, Compulsion, Modernity written by Jennifer L. Fleissner and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1890s have long been thought one of the most male-oriented eras in American history. But in reading such writers as Frank Norris with Mary Wilkins Freeman and Charlotte Perkins Gilman with Stephen Crane, Jennifer L. Fleissner boldly argues that feminist claims in fact shaped the period's cultural mainstream. Women, Compulsion, Modernity reopens a moment when the young American woman embodied both the promise and threat of a modernizing world. Fleissner shows that this era's expanding opportunities for women were inseparable from the same modern developments—industrialization, consumerism—typically believed to constrain human freedom. With Women, Compulsion, and Modernity, Fleissner creates a new language for the strange way the writings of the time both broaden and question individual agency.
