Book excerpt: Abstract: This study examined the effective school characteristics identified in the effective schools research and the degree to which they are present in urban school districts in the lower Southeastern United States. The intent of this study was to identify indicators or factors of effectiveness in the selected middle school that are consistent with the seven correlates of effective schools as delineated in the research of Lawrence Lezotte. The methodology was chosen specifically to garner critical information on the efforts of promoting student achievement as well as the instructional strategies and programs that have been utilized. Data was gathered using a teacher survey, individualized interviews, focus group interviews, observations, and retrieval of archival data. The results of the data from the instruments was synthesized and reported for each correlate. Since the exemplary middle school had made Adequate Yearly Progress for three consecutive years, it was expected that strength in some or all the identified correlates of effective schools would be demonstrated. Results indicated that strength was demonstrated in five of the seven correlates. Of all the correlates examined, clear school mission, strong instructional leadership, high expectations for all students, maximization of opportunities for learning and student time on task, frequent monitoring of student progress, and safe and orderly environment were predominant. The positive home and school relations correlate fell below the identified level of 60 percent and was not significant.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to discover why teachers choose to remain in at-risk middle school campuses in the Annabella-Christina Independent School District (a pseudonym district). Working at a middle school serving at-risk students brings not only the stressors of at-risk campuses but also the added stress of dealing with teenagers in some of their most difficult years. Studies have found that almost 50 percent of middle school teachers leave the middle school grades or leave education altogether within five years of starting their position (Colbert & Wolf, 1992; Darling-Hammond, 2003). Grissom (2011) stated that studies show at-risk campus teachers tend to get burned out more quickly because of the working conditions. The study takes place in a large suburban school district in the greater Houston area. The participants of the study were divided into two groups. Group one was made of five at-risk middle school principals. Group two, included 68 at-risk middle school teachers with at least two years experience on their current campus. The goal of the study was to expand the body of knowledge to help principals understand why teachers choose to remain in at-risk middle school campuses and what their campuses can do to help influence their teachers to return. The study was divided into three phases. The first phase of the study was to create a survey through an online survey gathering website. Phase two of the study was to have participants of the study complete the survey. Phase three of the study was to analyze the data and find themes that teacher's state as reasons they choose to stay in at-risk campuses and compare those responses to what their principals stated they believed were the factors that caused teachers to stay. The researcher found teachers who participated in the survey stated eleven reasons for returning. The researcher found that principals stated three reasons that they perceived teachers stayed. The researcher found the number one reason stated by participating teachers for returning was 'for their students'. The researcher also found that a majority of the principals that participated in the study believed the reason teachers returned to the same at-risk campus was the campus culture.

It introduces the notion that the approach to developing a curriculum appropriate for adolescents should be based on similarities of human learning at different ages, as well as the uniqueness of the adolescent. Chapter 1 highlights six fundamental notions about how the human brain learns, including intelligence as a function of experience and the impact of personality. Chapter 2 outlines how these notions can be implemented in the classroom and school to create a "brain-compatible" learning environment. Chapter 3 looks at the issue of curriculum and offers suggestions for a new "meme"-based curriculum. Chapters 4, 5, and 6 describe the steps necessary to complete the three stages in developing integrated curriculum: creating a yearlong theme with monthly components and weekly topics, identifying key points, and developing inquiries. Chapter 7 presents several tools for evaluating student learning in ways that are brain-compatible, consistent with goals of the authentic assessment movement, and that can also satisfy district needs for student and teacher assessment and accountability. Chapter 8 describes the possible stages in the transition to a fully integrated and brain-compatible integrated thematic instruction program for students. The chapter discusses each of five transition models, its structures and advantages, and tips and pitfalls to help teachers implement whichever model is selected. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.
