Indeed, geographical data is often obtained by an imperfect interpretation of remote sensing images, while people attach ill-defined or ambiguous labels to places and their properties. As another example, medical images are often the result of measurements by imprecise sensors (e.g. MRI scans). Moreover, by processing spatial information in real-world applications, additional uncertainty is introduced, e.g. due to the use of interpolation/extrapolation techniques or to conflicts that are detected in an information fusion step. To the best of our knowledge, this book presents the first overview of spatial uncertainty which goes beyond the setting of geographical information systems. Uncertainty issues are especially addressed from a representation and reasoning point of view. In particular, the book consists of 14 chapters, which are clustered around three central topics. The first of these topics is about the uncertainty in meaning of linguistic descriptions of spatial scenes. Second, the issue of reasoning about spatial relations and dealing with inconsistency in information merging is studied. Finally, interpolation and prediction of spatial phenomena are investigated, both at the methodological level and from an application-oriented perspective. The concept of uncertainty by itself is understood in a broad sense, including both quantitative and more qualitative approaches, dealing with variability, epistemic uncertainty, as well as with vagueness of terms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the world of data management, one of the most formidable challenges faced by academic scholars is the effective handling of spatiotemporal data within the semantic web. As our world continues to change dynamically with time, nearly every aspect of our lives, from environmental monitoring to urban planning and beyond, is intrinsically linked to time and space. This synergy has given rise to an avalanche of spatiotemporal data, and the pressing question is how to manage, model, and query this voluminous information effectively. The existing approaches often fall short in addressing the intricacies and uncertainties that come with spatiotemporal data, leaving scholars struggling to unlock its full potential. Uncertain Spatiotemporal Data Management for the Semantic Web is the definitive solution to the challenges faced by academic scholars in the realm of spatiotemporal data. This book offers a visionary approach to an all-encompassing guide in modeling and querying spatiotemporal data using innovative technologies like XML and RDF. Through a meticulously crafted set of chapters, this book sheds light on the nuances of spatiotemporal data and also provides practical solutions that empower scholars to navigate the complexities of this domain effectively.

The advantages of cloud computing and big data are leveraged to promote the categorization and customization of OERs micro learning context. For a micro-learning service, OERs are tailored into fragmented pieces to be consumed within shorter time frames.Firstly, the current status of mobile-learning, micro-learning, and OERs are described. Then, the significances and challenges of Micro Learning as a Service (MLaaS) are discussed. A framework of a service-oriented system is provided, which adopts both online and offline computation domain to work in conjunction to improve the performance of learning resource adaptation. In addition, a comprehensive learner model and a knowledge base is prepared to semantically profile the learners and learning resource. The novel delivery and access mode of OERs suffers from the cold start problem because of the shortage of already-known learner information versus the continuously released new micro OERs. This unique volume provides an excellent feasible algorithmic solution to overcome the cold start problem.
