This theory is built around two versions of "propriety" for topos maps, introduced here in a parallel fashion. The first, giving what we simply call "proper" maps, is a relatively weak condition due to Johnstone. The second kind of proper maps, here called "tidy", satisfy a stronger condition due to Tierney and Lindgren. Various forms of the Beck-Chevalley condition for (lax) fibered product squares of toposes play a central role in the development of the theory. Applications include a version of the Reeb stability theorem for toposes, a characterization of hyperconnected Hausdorff toposes as classifying toposes of compact groups, and of strongly Hausdorff coherent toposes as classifiying toposes of profinite groupoids. Our results also enable us to develop further particular aspects of the factorization theory of geometric morphisms studied by Johnstone. Our final application is a (so-called lax) descent theorem for tidy maps between toposes. This theorem implies the lax descent theorem for coherent toposes, conjectured by Makkai and proved earlier by Zawadowski.

Book excerpt: We employ recent advances in the theory of operator spaces, also known as quantized functional analysis, to provide a context in which one can compare categories of modules over operator algebras that are not necessarily self-adjoint. We focus our attention on the category of Hilbert modules over an operator algebra and on the category of operator modules over an operator algebra. The module operations are assumed to be completely bounded - usually, completely contractive. Wedevelop the notion of a Morita context between two operator algebras A and B. This is a system (A,B,{} {A}X {B},{} {B} Y {A},(\cdot,\cdot),[\cdot,\cdot]) consisting of the algebras, two bimodules {A}X {B and {B}Y {A} and pairings (\cdot,\cdot) and [\cdot,\cdot] that induce (complete) isomorphisms betweenthe (balanced) Haagerup tensor products, X \otimes {hB} {} Y and Y \otimes {hA} {} X, and the algebras, A and B, respectively. Thus, formally, a Morita context is the same as that which appears in pure ring theory. The subtleties of the theory lie in the interplay between the pure algebra and the operator space geometry. Our analysis leads to viable notions of projective operator modules and dual operator modules. We show that two C*-algebras are Morita equivalent in our sense if and only ifthey are C*-algebraically strong Morita equivalent, and moreover the equivalence bimodules are the same. The distinctive features of the non-self-adjoint theory are illuminated through a number of examples drawn from complex analysis and the theory of incidence algebras over topological partial orders. Finally, an appendix provides links to the literature that developed since this Memoir was accepted for publication.

Book excerpt: First the author introduces a generalization of the notion of (right)-exact functor between abelian categories to the case of non-additive functors. The main result of this section is an extension theorem: any functor defined on a suitable subcategory can be extended uniquely to a right exact functor defined on the whole category. Next those results are used to define various functors of generalized tensor induction, associated to finite bisets, between categories attached to finite groups. This includes a definition of tensor induction for Mackey functors, for cohomological Mackey functors, for p-permutation modules and algebras. This also gives a single formalism of bisets for restriction, inflation, and ordinary tensor induction for modules.

We discuss the general theory of pure-injective modules and concentrate on the isomorphism classes of indecomposable pure-injective modules which form the underlying set of this spectrum. The interplay between the spectrum and the category of finitely presented modules provides new insight into the geometrical and homological properties of the category of finitely presented modules. Various applications from representation theory of finite dimensional algebras are included.

Book excerpt: The main goal of this paper is to prove the following conjecture of Baues and Lemaire: the differential graded Lie Tlgebra associated with the Sullivan model of a space is homotopy equivalent to its Quillen model. In addition we show the same for the cellular Lie algebra model which we build from the simplicial analog of the classical Adams-Hilton model. It turns out that this cellular Lie algebra model is one link in a chain of models connecting the models of Quillen and Sullivan. The key result which makes all this possible is Anick's correspondence between differential graded Lie algebras and Hopf algebras up to homotopy. In addition we show that the Quillen model is a rational homotopical equivalence, and we conclude the same for the other models using our main result. Theconstruction of the three models is given in detail. The background from homotopy theory, differential algebra, and algebra is presented in great generality.

Book excerpt: We study the partially ordered set of quantum dynamical semigroups dominated by a given semigroup on the algebra of all bounded operators on a Hilbert space. For semigroups of *-endomorphisms this set can be described through cocycles. This helps us to prove a factorization theorem for dilations and to show that minimal dilations of quantum dynamical semigroups with bounded generators can be got through Hudson-Parthasarathy cocycles.

The longer paper in Part A obtains necessary and sufficient conditions for several types of codings of Markov chains onto Bernoulli shifts. It proceeds by replacing the defining stochastic matrix of each Markov chain by a matrix whose entries are polynomials with positive coefficients in several variables; a Bernoulli shift is represented by a single polynomial with positive coefficients, $p$. This transforms jointly topological and measure-theoretic coding problems into combinatorial ones. In solving the combinatorial problems in Part A, the work states and makes use of facts from Part B concerning $p DEGREESn$ and its coefficients. Part B contains the shorter paper on $p DEGREESn$ and its coefficients, and is independ

Book excerpt: We give a self-contained account of the results originating in the work of James and the second author in the 1980s relating the representation theory of GL[n(F[q) over fields of characteristic coprime to q to the representation theory of "quantum GL[n" at roots of unity. The new treatment allows us to extend the theory in several directions. First, we prove a precise functorial connection between the operations of tensor product in quantum GL[n and Harish-Chandra induction in finite GL[n. This allows us to obtain a version of the recent Morita theorem of Cline, Parshall and Scott valid in addition for p-singular classes. From that we obtain simplified treatments of various basic known facts, such as the computation of decomposition numbers and blocks of GL[n(F[q) from knowledge of the same for the quantum group, and the non-defining analogue of Steinberg's tensor product theorem. We also easily obtain a new double centralizer property between GL[n(F[[q) and quantum GL[n, generalizing a result of Takeuchi. Finally, we apply the theory to study the affine general linear group, following ideas of Zelevinsky in characteristic zero. We prove results that can be regarded as the modular analogues of Zelevinsky's and Thoma's branching rules. Using these, we obtain a new dimension formula for the irreducible cross-characteristic representations of GL[n(F[q), expressing their dimensions in terms of the characters of irreducible modules over the quantum group.

Book excerpt: If a black box simple group is known to be isomorphic to a classical group over a field of known characteristic, a Las Vegas algorithm is used to produce an explicit isomorphism. The proof relies on the geometry of the classical groups rather than on difficult group-theoretic background. This algorithm has applications to matrix group questions and to nearly linear time algorithms for permutation groups. In particular, we upgrade all known nearly linear time Monte Carlo permutation group algorithms to nearly linear Las Vegas algorithms when the input group has no composition factor isomorphic to an exceptional group of Lie type or a 3-dimensional unitary group.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A multi-interval quasi-differential system $\{I_{r},M_{r},w_{r}:r\in\Omega\}$ consists of a collection of real intervals, $\{I_{r}\}$, as indexed by a finite, or possibly infinite index set $\Omega$ (where $\mathrm{card} (\Omega)\geq\aleph_{0}$ is permissible), on which are assigned ordinary or quasi-differential expressions $M_{r}$ generating unbounded operators in the Hilbert function spaces $L_{r}^{2}\equiv L^{2}(I_{r};w_{r})$, where $w_{r}$ are given, non-negative weight functions. For each fixed $r\in\Omega$ assume that $M_{r}$ is Lagrange symmetric (formally self-adjoint) on $I_{r}$ and hence specifies minimal and maximal closed operators $T_{0,r}$ and $T_{1,r}$, respectively, in $L_{r}^{2}$. However the theory does not require that the corresponding deficiency indices $d_{r}^{-}$ and $d_{r}^{+}$ of $T_{0,r}$ are equal (e. g. the symplectic excess $Ex_{r}=d_{r}^{+}-d_{r}^{-}\neq 0$), in which case there will not exist any self-adjoint extensions of $T_{0,r}$ in $L_{r}^{2}$. In this paper a system Hilbert space $\mathbf{H}:=\sum_{r\,\in\,\Omega}\oplus L_{r}^{2}$ is defined (even for non-countable $\Omega$) with corresponding minimal and maximal system operators $\mathbf{T}_{0}$ and $\mathbf{T}_{1}$ in $\mathbf{H}$. Then the system deficiency indices $\mathbf{d}^{\pm} =\sum_{r\,\in\,\Omega}d_{r}^{\pm}$ are equal (system symplectic excess $Ex=0$), if and only if there exist self-adjoint extensions $\mathbf{T}$ of $\mathbf{T}_{0}$ in $\mathbf{H}$. The existence is shown of a natural bijective correspondence between the set of all such self-adjoint extensions $\mathbf{T}$ of $\mathbf{T}_{0}$, and the set of all complete Lagrangian subspaces $\mathsf{L}$ of the system boundary complex symplectic space $\mathsf{S}=\mathbf{D(T}_{1})/\mathbf{D(T}_{0})$. This result generalizes the earlier symplectic version of the celebrated GKN-Theorem for single interval systems to multi-interval systems. Examples of such complete Lagrangians, for both finite and infinite dimensional complex symplectic $\mathsf{S}$, illuminate new phenoma for the boundary value problems of multi-interval systems. These concepts have applications to many-particle systems of quantum mechanics, and to other physical problems.
