Which means that these days, with the right equipment, just about anyone can produce graphically sophisticated documents--or clumsy ill-conceived messes. To make sure you end up with the former, you need this comprehensive guide! Realizing that many of today's desktop publishers come to the task with no formal design or graphics training, authors David Blatner, Glenn Fleishman, Steve Roth, and Conrad Chavez, detail both the theory and practice of producing top-notch scans and halftones. Through tips, techniques, step-by-step instructions, and real-world examples, you'll learn how to scan, sharpen, and output your images as well as how to correct color and tone. Throughout, the emphasis is on not just how to perform a given task but why it makes sense to do so in a certain way. Filled with sure-fire techniques and practical discussions of today's software and hardware, when it comes to halftones and scans, this guide covers it all!

Book excerpt: The late 1980s, revolutionary advances in digital halftoning enabled inkjet printers to achieve much higher image fidelity. The rapid rate of progress has resulted in numerous breakthroughs scattered throughout the literature, rendering old technologies obsolete and renewing the need for a centralized source on the current state of the art. Entirely revised and updated, Modern Digital Halftoning, Second Edition provides an integrated and up-to-date treatment of stochastic halftoning and digital printing. Using full-color illustrations to enhance the text, this edition incorporates new topics as well as updated models, algorithms, and methods used to construct and improve the quality of green-noise, blue-noise, and multitone images. Following a review of various halftoning techniques, this edition now covers amplitude modulated dither arrays, adapting to human visual models, direct binary search, and handling stochastic moiré problems. It also presents a new chapter on lenticular printing, a means for printing color holographic images. An accompanying CD-ROM contains MATLAB® software files and illustrated examples employing algorithms, statistics, and other key concepts from the book. Documenting the development of digital printing since the first edition, Modern Digital Halftoning, Second Edition offers a well-rounded and accurate perspective on the technological capabilities of digital printing and provides all the necessary tools for continuing research in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first edition of this book was published several new developments have been made in the field of the moiré theory. The most important of these concern new results that have recently been obtained on moiré effects between correlated aperiodic (or random) structures, a subject that was completely absent in the first edition, and which appears now for the first time in a second, separate volume. This also explains the change in the title of the present volume, which now includes the subtitle “Volume I: Periodic Layers”. This subtitle has been added to clearly distinguish the present volume from its new companion, which is subtitled “Volume II: Aperiodic Layers”. It should be noted, however, that the new subtitle of the present volume may be somewhat misleading, since this book also treats (in Chapters 10 and 11) moiré effects between repetitive layers, which are, in fact, geometric transformations of periodic layers, that are generally no longer periodic in themselves. The most suitable subtitle for the present volume would therefore have been “Periodic or Repetitive Layers”, but in the end we have decided on the shorter version.
