Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume looks forward and re-examines present day education and pedagogical practices in music and dance in the diverse cultural environments found in Oceania. The book also identifies a key issue of how teachers face the prospect of taking a reflexive view of their own cultural legacy in music and dance education as they work from and alongside different cultural worldviews. This key issue, amongst other debates that arise, positions Intersecting Cultures as an innovative text that fills a gap in the current market with highly appropriate and fresh ideas from primary sources. The book offers commentaries that underpin and inform current pedagogy and bigger picture policy for the performing arts in education in Oceania, and in parallel ways in other countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Folk Songs Hawaii Sings is a sparkling compilation of melodies from the islands of Polynesia together with a variety of folk songs that countless Asian people have brought with them to their new home in the Hawaiian Islands. In one sense it is a musical picture of the renowned harmonious blend of people who reside in Hawaii today; in another, it is a colorful record of ties with the Eastern world and ancestral heritage in line with the same American tradition that saw songs of the soil and the sea brought to the United States from Europe in an earlier age. All the songs and more, whether from Hawaii or Samoa, China or Japan, the Philippines, Okinawa, or Mongolia, are melodic bearers of traditions and aspirations, or vehicles of simple pleasures that form the background of the people who today share the hospitable sun of the Hawaiian Islands with their Caucasian neighbors. These melodies and rhythms have found their way into the many festivals and musical presentations that are so much a way of life in the welcome addition to the American Union.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dancing from the Heart is the first study of gender, globalization, and expressive culture in the Cook Islands. It demonstrates how dance in particular plays a key role in articulating the overlapping local, regional, and transnational agendas of Cook Islanders. Kalissa Alexeyeff reconfigures conventional views of globalization’s impact on indigenous communities, moving beyond diagnoses of cultural erosion and contamination to a grounded exploration of creative agency and vital cultural production. Central to the study is a rich and textured ethnographic account of contemporary Cook Islands dance practice. Based on fieldwork, in-depth interviews, and archival research, it offers an engrossing analysis of how Cook Islands social life is generated through expressive practices. Dance is explored in a variety of settings, including beauty pageants, tourist venues, nightclubs and community celebrations at home and within Cook Islands communities abroad. Contemporary Cook Islands dance practices are also shaped by competing ideas about the past. Debates about precolonial traditions, missionization, and colonialism pervade discussions about dance and expressive culture. Alexeyeff shows how the politics of tradition reflect the competing moral, political, personal, and economic practices of postcolonial Cook Islanders. Throughout the work the stories and voices of individuals are brought to the fore. Their views are juxtaposed with scholarship on tradition, modernity, and social dynamics. Engaging and accessible, Dancing from the Heart illuminates specific and intimate aspects of Cook Islands social life while, at the same time, addressing fundamental questions within anthropology and indigenous, performance, and postcolonial studies.
