Book excerpt: In response to the needs of lecturers, the acclaimed Handbook of Organization Studies has been made available as two major paperback textbooks. In this, the first of a two-volume paperback edition of the landmark Handbook of Organization Studies, editors Stewart Clegg and Cynthia Hardy survey the field of organization studies. Studying Organization is an ideal textbook around which to build courses on organization theory and research methodology. Central to the enterprise has been a concern to reflect and honour the manifest diversity of the field, including recognition of the extent to which the very notion of a single field of organization studies is debated. Part One locates the study of organization by reviewing some of the most significant theoretical paradigms to have shaped our understanding. The second part reflects on the relationships between theory and research in organization studies.

Book excerpt: Organizational Theory in Higher Education offers a fresh take on the models and lenses through which higher education can be viewed by presenting a full range of organizational theories, from traditional to current. By alternating theory and practice chapters, noted scholar Kathleen Manning vividly illustrates the operations of higher education and its administration. Manning’s rich and interdisciplinary treatment enables leaders to gain a full understanding of the perspectives that operate on a college campus and ways to adopt effective practice in the context of new and continuing tensions, contexts, and challenges. Special features include: A unique presentation of each organizational model that includes both a theory chapter for contextual background and a case chapter illustrating the perspective in practice Coverage of eight organizational approaches, both traditional as well as those often excluded from the literature—organized anarchy, collegium, political, cultural, bureaucratic, new science, feminist, and spiritual. Consistent organizational elements across each theoretical chapter—including theoretical foundation, structure, metaphor, characteristics, and strengths and weaknesses—so that readers can better assess appropriate fit of theory to particular situations Questions for Discussion and Recommended Readings assist the reader to make connections to their practice and to develop an in-depth understanding of the organizational theories Organizational Theory in Higher Education provides a clear understanding of how organizational models can be used to elicit the most effective practice and to navigate the complexity of higher education today. Book excerpt: Plantation Politics and Campus Rebellions provides a multidisciplinary exploration of the contemporary university's entanglement with the history of slavery and settler colonialism in the United States. Inspired by more than a hundred student-led protests during the Movement for Black Lives, contributors examine how campus rebellions—and university responses to them—expose the racialized inequities at the core of higher education. Plantation politics are embedded in the everyday workings of universities—in not only the physical structures and spaces of academic institutions, but in its recruitment and attainment strategies, hiring practices, curriculum, and notions of sociality, safety, and community. The book is comprised of three sections that highlight how white supremacy shapes campus communities and classrooms; how current diversity and inclusion initiatives perpetuate inequality; and how students, staff, and faculty practice resistance in the face of institutional and legislative repression. Each chapter interrogates a connection between the academy and the plantation, exploring how Black people and their labor are viewed as simultaneously essential and disruptive to university cultures and economies. The volume is an indispensable read for students, faculty, student affairs professionals, and administrators invested in learning more about how power operates within education and imagining emancipatory futures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sino-African relations have evoked a great deal of geo-strategic interest in recent years. Most attention has focused on China’s assistance to and growing involvement in the economic development of several African nations. Far less emphasis has been placed on Africans in China, and on African actors’ involvement in the Chinese economy, despite the importance of both to genuinely bilateral economic relations. This is one of the first studies to focus on South African foreign direct investment (FDI) in Mainland China. The research aims to identify and specify the key institutional factors that have contributed to the effectiveness or otherwise of South African firms entering and operating within the Chinese market. The research also investigates the characteristics and processes that have effectively shaped South African firms’ business strategies to negotiate the current Chinese institutional environment. The study’s primary empirical contribution is ten real-life case studies drawn from a cross-section of South African business actors who have sought to penetrate the Chinese market. These case studies are interrogated conceptually by means of a three-dimensional institutional model which explores the role of formal and informal business processes and practices in influencing business success and failure in the Sino-South African context. It will be of value to researchers, academics, policymakers, Sino-African business practitioners, and advanced students in the fields of international business, political economy, strategy, and Asian and African studies.

Using an ecological model, however, Community over Chaos develops a common ground for ethical judgments about communication, thus countering the current theoretical climate of pessimistic cynicism toward the very possibility of ethics.
