Book excerpt: The Fourth Reader has been made essentially the book of myths and legends because it is held by the authors that these stories represent the next step in the development of the child's interests in literature. In this book the child reads eighteen of the best myths and legends, including some from Greek, Norse, German, Austrian, and American sources. The poetry is selected with the same care as in the earlier books, with special reference to the child's feeling for rhythm, love of animated nature, and enjoyment of fun. Includes 37 black and white illustrations.

This book was released on 2021-08-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An engaging introduction to the systems of the human body and the components of the environment that affect health. In the first half of the book the reader learns about the various systems that make up the body-digestive, respiratory, circulatory, and excretory, as well as the muscles, bones, and joints that allow it to move, the sense organs that enable it to interact with its environment, and the brain and nervous system that control it all. Over two dozen labeled illustrations are included that students can render in their own notebooks as part of the learning process. For further study the author recommends examination of animal organs, such as eye, heart, kidney, and brain that can be obtained from the butcher or purchased in a dissecting kit. The second half of the book deals with establishing habits conducive to healthy living, through choices in clothing, food, and home environment. Given that the choices were more limited a century ago when this book was written, the second half of this book is less useful than the first. The four color illustrations in the original edition are rendered in black and white in this edition. Visit the Yesterday's Classics website for a downloadable pdf of the four color illustrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the 2021 TWS Wildlife Publication Awards The Eagle Owl is one of the largest owls in the world, and is considered the most eclectic in terms of habitat, nest site and diet. An undisputed top predator, it can prey on a range of mammals up to the size of a fox, and almost every species of bird, reptile, amphibian and fish, as well as a wide spectrum of invertebrates. Surprisingly, this owl can breed almost anywhere, the female laying her eggs on a variety of natural and artificial structures over an array of altitudes. Despite being so adaptable, however, it is still a vulnerable species, and has suffered widely from persecution as well as other threats including electrocution on power lines, decreasing prey availability, the effects of pesticides and pollutants, and habitat alteration. Vincenzo Penteriani and María del Mar Delgado have studied this fascinating bird extensively across its vast Eurasian range. In this book, they detail its intriguing ecology, covering distribution, foraging and breeding behaviour, interspecific interactions, dispersal and conservation issues. The final two chapters provide a remarkable insight into vocal and visual communication. Scientists have long believed that owls and other crepuscular and nocturnal birds forgo the visual signals found in other avian species, but recent research on the Eagle Owl has suggested otherwise. Bringing together more than 30 years of research, The Eagle Owl tells a story rich in detail of one of the most thrilling and magnificent birds in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fourth volume in the series of Reading-Literature readers, whose purpose is to train children in reading and appreciating literature through the reading of literature. The Third Reader, while continuing with folk and fairy stories, introduces the wonder tale, which becomes the dominant note, while the fable gives place to more extended and more modern animal stories. The poetry begins with the group from Stevenson, whom the children have already learned to enjoy. Then follow selections from Lydia Maria Child, Lucy Larcom, Eugene Field, and a score of others dealing mainly with children's interests in animals and other forms of nature. With this series of books, besides merely learning to read, the child has the joy of reading the best in the language, and he is forming his taste for all subsequent reading. Attractive black and white illustrations are appealing to children. Suitable for ages 8 and up.

Book excerpt: A piercing, unforgettable love story set in Greenwood, Oklahoma, also known as the “Black Wall Street,” and against the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. Isaiah Wilson is, on the surface, a town troublemaker, but is hiding that he is an avid reader and secret poet, never leaving home without his journal. Angel Hill is a loner, mostly disregarded by her peers as a goody-goody. Her father is dying, and her family’s financial situation is in turmoil. Though they’ve attended the same schools, Isaiah never noticed Angel as anything but a dorky, Bible toting church girl. Then their English teacher offers them a job on her mobile library, a three-wheel, two-seater bike. Angel can’t turn down the money and Isaiah is soon eager to be in such close quarters with Angel every afternoon. But life changes on May 31, 1921 when a vicious white mob storms the Black community of Greenwood, leaving the town destroyed and thousands of residents displaced. Only then, Isaiah, Angel, and their peers realize who their real enemies are.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mary Poppins that many people know of today--a stern, but sweet, loveable, and reassuring British nanny--is a far cry from the character created by Pamela Lyndon Travers in the 1930's. Instead, this is the Mary Poppins reinvented by Disney in the eponymous movie. This book sheds light on the original Mary Poppins, Myth, Symbol, and Meaning in Mary Poppins is the only full-length study that covers all the Mary Poppins books, exposing just how subversive the pre-Disney Mary Poppins character truly was. Drawing important parallels between the character and the life of her creator, who worked as a governess herself, Grilli reveals the ways in which Mary Poppins came to unsettle the rigid and rigorous rules of Victorian and Edwardian society that most governesses embodied, taught, and passed on to their charges.

Book excerpt: Before the days of Schoolhouse Rock's jingles like “Conjunction Junction,” there was the playful primer "Grammar-Land," which has been teaching children (and adults in need of a refresher) the basic rules of English grammar since its first publication in 1878. In the allegorical world of Grammar-Land, the nine parts of speech—rich Mr. Noun, his useful friend Pronoun, little ragged Article, talkative Adjective, busy Dr. Verb and Adverb, perky Preposition, convenient Conjunction, and irksome Interjection—are brought to trial by Judge Grammar to settle disputes over the rules of language. Each part of speech is called in turn to take the stand, where they are questioned by Doctor Syntax and Sergeant Parsing. In the course of the amusing trial, the reader, perhaps without even realizing it, is exposed to the most important rules of grammar.
