Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reading Courses in American Literature Frequent inquiries by members of reading circles, by college students, and others, for a systematic course of reading in the American Classics have led the author to the publication of the following pages, originally prepared for use with his elective courses. The value of systematic reading need not be dwelt upon, and the inability of the average reader to select his own path needs no comment. These courses, which cover only a small fraction of the great mass of our literature, aim to present to the reader only the very best products of American belleslettres. The endeavor has been to include nothing in Course I which has not stood the test of time, and which has not been admitted by the general consent of critics to the select list of American Classics.
