Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains why some Korean high school students sleep during English classes in spite of the emphasized value of English in their society. It examines how this sleeping-in-class phenomenon can be understood by means of such marginalized students’ emic outlooks on themselves, the target language, their teachers, schools, and society/culture; and by means of the views of teachers who have experienced such in-class sleepers. To understand the phenomenon more holistically, it pursues a multi-disciplinary approach drawing on studies of demotivation and amotivation, psychological needs, and student experiences of schooling, as well as sociocultural theories of learning and agency and of interpersonal dynamics, among others. On the basis of a multi-modal analysis of interview data from the student and teacher participants, it theoretically interprets the phenomenon at the classroom (‘micro-’), school (‘meso-’) and society-culture (‘macro-’) levels. Taking a humanistic/existential approach to education, it subsequently presents a number of cultural actions that it advocates implementing in a situation-sensitive manner to help in-class sleepers and their educational institutions awaken from their chronic slumber. Lastly, it presents practical and theoretical implications for more humanistic pedagogy, and global studies of student disengagement, in English-as-a-foreign-language classes.

It builds skills gradually and introduces students to reading and briefing cases, gathering facts using various methods, drafting memoranda and client communications, and writing for the court. This book covers both predictive and persuasive writing in a way that is accessible to students. Students will also learn to edit their work and the work of others for style and substance. The text gives examples for students to use as models and has many interactive exercises through which students can test their newly acquired skills. The online text has links to the cases that students will need, definitions, videos, and exercises to help them hone their writing skills. In addition to learning about written documents and how to communicate in the U.S. common law system, the authors provide an international perspective. Students will learn about civil law traditions through the comparative exercises included in this text. The text also addresses ways to stay focused and reduce stress during law school and in legal careers through the concept of mindful lawyering. Examples in writing and on video showing how judges and lawyers stay focused and mindful are linked in the text. The second edition utilizes the CasebookPlus(tm) platform, providing your students with digital access to faculty authored self-assessments that provide helpful explanations and digital access to additional study resources, including Gilbert Law Dictionary. Students should enjoy working with this material and the online components of the text and will benefit from the unique features this interactive casebook offers.

Touching on issues that affect students both as individuals and as citizens, the readings and visuals invite students to join important civic "conversations" through their own writing. For each issue addressed, Conversations offers not just one or two selections, but several--reminding students that no issue has just one or two sides, but usually involves a wide range of voices. Frequently, selections comment on and argue with other selections, demonstrating that writing is a social exchange, and that writing is often prompted as a response to that which we read. The images included also remind students that we regularly "read"--that is interpret and respond to--not only words, but visual arguments found in photographs, artworks, cartoons, and advertisements. 0321881710 / 9780321881717 Conversations: Reading for Writing with NEW MyCompLab -- Access Card Package Package consists of: 0205835112 / 9780205835119 Conversations: Reading for Writing 020589190X / 9780205891900 NEW MyCompLab - Valuepack Access Card
