Book excerpt: This Text-book traces the evolution of the newspaper, documenting its changing form, style and content as well as identifying the different roles ascribed to it by audiences, government and other social institutions. Starting with the early 17th century, when the first prototype newspapers emerged, through Dr Johnson, the growth of the radical press in the early 19th century, the Lord Northcliffe revolution in the early 20th century, the newspapers wars of the 1930s and the rise of the tabloid in the 1970s, right up to Rupert Murdoch and the online revolution, the book explores the impact of the newspapers on our lives and its role in British society. Using lively and entertaining examples, Kevin Williams illustrates the changing form of the newspaper in its social, political, economic and cultural context. As well as telling the story of the newspaper, he explores key topics in detail, making this an ideal text for students of journalism and the British newspaper. Issues include: newspapers and social change the changing face of regional newspapers the impact of new technology development of reporting techniques forms of press regulation

Book excerpt: In the early 1800s Irish men and women, by the thousands, escaped the deepening poverty and hopelessness of their homeland. America offered prosperity and hope, and twelve-year-old John Gilmore made the lonely, treacherous ocean crossing to the new country. Aboard ship two older boys beat him mercilessly and a horrific storm nearly ended his search for a better life. New York City's "Hell Hole", Five Points, the Irish enclave, proved to be more dangerous and nearly as poverty-ridden as Ireland. Growing up Johnny sold newspapers and learned to survive on the city's vicious streets. A whirlwind love affair culminated in marriage and children. Five Points deteriorated further with the coming of shantytowns and street gangs. The Gilmore family escaped the city via the newly completed Erie Canal and made their way to Pekin (now Detroit), onto Fort Dearborn (now Chicago) and to the wild Illinois frontier. Although the Mississippi River valley had experienced settlements, the interior of Illinois was sparsely inhabited. Seventy-five miles from Chicago John met Zachariah Melugin the areas first settler, bought forty acres of land and began to farm. Roaming Indian bands, the Bandittis of the Prairies, squatters and the day-to-day hardships of the untamed frontier challenged their staying power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Printing and Painting the News in Victorian London offers a fresh perspective on Social Realism by contextualizing it within the burgeoning new media environment of Victorian London. Paintings labelled as Social Realist by Luke Fildes, Frank Holl and Hubert Herkomer are frequently considered to typify the sentimental Victorian genre painting that quickly became outdated with the development of modernism. Yet this book argues that the paintings must be considered as the result of the new experiences of modernity-the urban poverty that the paintings represent and, most importantly, the advent of the mass-produced illustrated news. Fildes, Holl and Herkomer worked for The Graphic, a publication launched in 1869 as a rival to the dominant Illustrated London News. The artists? illustrations, which featured the growing problem of urban poverty, became the basis for large-scale paintings that provoked controversy among their contemporaries and later became known as Social Realism. This first in-depth study of The Graphic and Social Realism uses the approach of media archaeology to unearth the modernity of these works, showing that they engaged with the changing notions of objectivity and immediacy that nineteenth-century new media cultivated. In doing so, this book proposes an alternative trajectory for the development of modernism that allows for a richer understanding of nineteenth-century visual culture.
