Book Synopsis Making a Scene in the Pulpit by : Alyce M. McKenzie
Download or read book Making a Scene in the Pulpit written by Alyce M. McKenzie and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can preachers ensure that their sermons continue to engage listeners in a world defined by visual media and the short, segmented delivery of information? Alyce McKenzie harnesses the element of drama and the human fascination with scenes to offer ministers a modern means of sermon development and delivery. McKenzie's core strategy is to invite listeners into scenes—whether from Scripture or contemporary life—and, once they are there, to point them toward the larger story of God's relationship with humankind. Creating such scenes unifies the whole process of preaching, she says, from the preacher's daily life observations to interpretation of scenes from Scripture, to sermon shaping, sequencing, and delivery. The process culminates in a specific understanding of the purpose of the sermon: to send listeners out into the scenes they'll play in their lives for the next week, equipped to act out their parts in ways that are kinder, more just, and more courageous than last week.
Book Synopsis Reach Beyond the Breach by : Mary Nell Green
Download or read book Reach Beyond the Breach written by Mary Nell Green and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To reach beyond the breach means to look beyond the trouble in your life by faith. In Hebrews 11:1, it says, "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." For example, a breach could be anything that comes against you. It may have happened six months ago; nevertheless, I'm hoping for what hasn't happened, and I'm sure that it will be manifested in my life. Therefore, I look beyond what the situation looks like and call those things that be not as though I already have it. Two years ago, I was diagnosed with melanoma cancer of the eye. That is a scary breach. Nevertheless, I put my trust and faith in God that my healing is already done according to his Word in 1 Peter 2:24. I encourage anyone who has a breach in your life to find the promise in God's Word and speak it daily and you will have what you say by your faith.

Book Synopsis Agony in the Pulpit by : Marc Saperstein
Download or read book Agony in the Pulpit written by Marc Saperstein and published by Hebrew Union College Press. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 1197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many scholars have focused on contemporary sources pertaining to the Nazi persecution and mass murder of Jews between 1933 and 1945--citing dated documents, newspapers, diaries, and letters--but the sermons delivered by rabbis describing and protesting against the ever-growing oppression of European Jews have been largely neglected. Agony in the Pulpit is a response to this neglect, and to the accusations made by respected figures that Jewish leaders remained silent in the wake of catastrophe. The passages from sermons reproduced in this volume--delivered by 135 rabbis in fifteen countries, mainly from the United States and England--provide important evidence of how these rabbis communicated the ever-worsening news to their congregants, especially on important religious occasions when they had peak attendance and peak receptivity. A central theme is how the preachers related the contemporary horrors to ancient examples of persecution. Did they present what was occurring under Hitler as a reenactment of the murderous oppressions by Pharaoh, Amalek, Haman, Ahasuerus, the Crusaders, the Spanish Inquisition, the Russian Pogroms? When did they begin to recognize and articulate from their pulpits an awareness that current events were fundamentally unprecedented? Was the developing cataclysm consistent with traditional beliefs about God's control of what happened on earth? No other book-length study has presented such abundant evidence of rabbis in all streams of Jewish religious life seeking to rouse and inspire their congregants to full awareness of the catastrophic realities that were taking shape in the world beyond their synagogues.

Book Synopsis How to Reach More People by : Jerry Wilkins
Download or read book How to Reach More People written by Jerry Wilkins and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do we need better communication skills? It’s the question many church leaders are asking; “What can our church do to reach more people?” The question arises from two convictions. First, we are commanded to compel people into the Kingdom and we are to be witnesses of Jesus and the gospel to everyone. But we have a haunting sense that we have not yet completed this “great commission”. The second conviction is that our church will die if we don’t reach more people. A changing world is putting our message and method to the test. How can we be true to the message and, at the same time, use all the tools, resources, and skills we now have available? Jerry believes God gives the increase and people don’t come to the Father unless the Spirit convicts and draws them. But, he focuses on the part we must play in the process. God’s word says we must “plant” and “water” the seed of the gospel. He says we are to proclaim His truth and compel people into the Kingdom by always communicating the reason for our faith. Jerry believes we are inviting but not compelling! This book gives clear direction as to how we should word our message and how to use every communication method available to us, and in the best possible way. He has given us a clear and practical plan for a more effective, yet practical strategy of church communication. Jerry Wilkins has his B.A. in marketing and has his Masters from Southwestern Seminary. He has studied and applied marketing and communication skills first as a Pastor and then as a denominational leader for thirty years. He is respected as a church communication strategist. He has authored several books including Marketing Your Sunday School, Smooth Sailing: Avoiding Storms in Your Ministry, and Resolving Conflict God’s Way. Jerry resides in Alabama with his wife of 50 years and has two grown children and one granddaughter.
