India and Australia as nation states emerge from the shared lineage of being part of the British Empire, which has characterized the nature of their respective journeys as modern nation states. Juxtaposing case studies from India and Australia reveals that although both locations differ in their particular historical and social contexts, both contend with similar challenges and compulsions, characteristic of modernity. Employing a multi-scalar and interdisciplinary approach, this work examines issues of nature, nation and development within the context of modernity. While India and Australia have radically different historical imaginations, their paths now increasingly intersect, so that the task of making sense of their very different social imaginaries becomes vital to reimagining the dynamics between nations and nature. In this context, there is much to learn from their respective historic experiences and much that they have in common which demands attention in facing up to the major socioecological challenges of the twenty-first century. This book contributes towards trying to understand the ways in which nations are constantly imagined and find new ways of thinking about nature.

Book excerpt: The thesis examines two societies, India and Australia, through the symbolic matrixes of nation, heritage, development and the public intellectual. Using case studies from both countries, I show how cultural formations are both embedded in and evolve as imaginaries that cohere, overlap and diverge within and across societies. Itrace the course of two rivers, the Narmada and the Snowy, side by side with the changing stories of imagining nations to understand the micro-narratives of the 'nation'. The next chapter looks at the trope of heritage, as the present's selective engagement with the past to unravel the dissonances within different forms of heritage, be it national or world heritage, through the two water ecologies of Ningaloo and the Sundarbans. The enduring sustainability of the rhetoric of hope in the promise of development as a progressing movement in time is inquired into with Tasmania and Kerala as case studies in the following chapter. The role of writers as public intellectuals, involved in four of the case studies, is explored by analyzing creative texts and their creator's role with regard to the text and the world in both India and Australia. The cultural formations, examined vis-à-vis the two societies, emerge as both alternative and analogous social imaginaries, with similar and dissimilar internal contradictions, which reveal the many points of convergence, and the usefulness and the need for embarking on transnational studies of society.
