Book Synopsis Risk Levels in Coastal and River Engineering by : I. D. Mockett
Download or read book Risk Levels in Coastal and River Engineering written by I. D. Mockett and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 2002 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cost of ever more freguent floods, landslides and erosion on coastal and fluvial structures is considerable. Through more detailed consideration of the risks and their acceptability, the engineering community could make a 5% saving in the whole-life costs of coastal and fluvial engineering projects, amounting to 250 million annually in the UK alone. This book sets out to provide clear guidance on the process of setting acceptable risk levels. It illustrates the importance of involving all stakeholders in the setting of acceptable risk levels and throughout the deisgn process.

Book Synopsis Advanced Polymer Composites and Polymers in the Civil Infrastructure by : L.C. Hollaway
Download or read book Advanced Polymer Composites and Polymers in the Civil Infrastructure written by L.C. Hollaway and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-07-12 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the fabrication technologies for the production of advanced polymer composites have been revolutionised by sophisticated manufacturing techniques. These methods have enabled polymer composite materials to produce good quality laminates with minimal voids and accurate fibre alignment. This book familiarises and provides a background to the understanding and use of advanced polymer composites in the civil infrastructure; numerous examples have been provided to illustrate the use and versatility of the material. Furthermore, the book discusses the current fabrication techniques, design methods and formulae for the design of structural composite systems. In addition it discusses the fundamentals of geosynthetics used in geotechnical engineering. The book introduces the fibres and matrices that are used to manufacture composites, their mechanical and in-service properties and their long term loading characteristics; all these properties are specifically associated with the construction industry. The chapters then discuss the design aspects for 'all composite' units, as well as systems used for the renewal of civil infrastructure. Finally, the book demonstrated the unique possibilities of combining composites with conventional materials to form units in which the various materials making up the unit are loaded in the mode that specifically suits their mechanical characteristics.
Book Synopsis Reliability-Based Design of Engineered Wood Structures by : J. Bodig
Download or read book Reliability-Based Design of Engineered Wood Structures written by J. Bodig and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reliability-based design (RBD) procedures for engineered structures are being developed and quickly gaining acceptance by cade agencies throughout the world. Numerous organizations are involved in the development of national or regional cades without the benefit of interchange of ideas and methodologies. Harmonization and coordination of these activities is absolutely essential if the ever-increasing international commerce is to flourish. This NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) was organized to bring together, for the first time, experts on RBD and related subjects from various countries to assess the current knowledge and recommend new developments. Further, due to their unique nature and great economic significance in most parts of the world, special emphasis was placed on engineered wood structures. For example, in North America more wood products are used in construction than ali other materials (steel, concrete, brick, etc.) combined. However, the wood industry segment, historically, receives less attention and smaller financial support for new developments than other construction materials. RBD developments are being conducted in Similar, but largely independent, Europe, North America, New Zealand and Australia. Experts from these regions were brought together to exchange information on current work, propose new developments and to provide means of international coordination. Thus, this ARW provided an opportunity to advance the cause of RBD of engineered wood structures.

Book Synopsis Methods of Structural Safety by : H. O. Madsen
Download or read book Methods of Structural Safety written by H. O. Madsen and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncertainties about analytical models, fluctuations in loads, and variability of material properties contribute to the small but real probability of structure failures. This advanced engineering text describes methods developed to deal with stochastic aspects of structural behavior, providing a framework for evaluating, comparing, and combining stochastic effects. Starting with the general problem of consistent evaluation of the reliability of structures, the text proceeds to examination of the second-moment reliability index methods that describe failure in terms of one or more limit states. It presents first-order reliability methods for computation of failure probabilities for individual limit states and for systems; and it illustrates identification of the design parameters most affecting reliability. Additional subjects include a self-contained presentation of extreme-value theory and stochastic processes; stationary, evolutionary, and nonlinear aspects of stochastic response of structures; a stochastic approach to material fatigue damage and crack propagation; and stochastic models for several natural and manufactured loads.
Book Synopsis Bridge Collapse Frequencies versus Failure Probabilities by : Dirk Proske
Download or read book Bridge Collapse Frequencies versus Failure Probabilities written by Dirk Proske and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides a comparative study between failure probabilities and collapse frequencies in structural bridge engineering. The author presents techniques to resolve and extend the limitations of both parameters, taking also into account the time dependency of both parameters. The book includes available data and case studies and thus presents patterns to identify potential weaknesses and challenges in bridge maintenance. The target audience primarily comprises practicing engineers in the field of bridge engineering, but the book may also be beneficial for academic researchers alike.

Book Synopsis Structural Reliability Theory and Its Applications by : P. Thoft-Cristensen
Download or read book Structural Reliability Theory and Its Applications written by P. Thoft-Cristensen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural reliability theory is concerned with the rational treatment of uncertainties in struc tural engineering and with the methods for assessing the safety and serviceability of civil en gineering and other structures. It is a subject which has grown rapidly during the last decade and has evolved from being a topic for academic research to a set of well-developed or develop ing methodologies with a wide range of practical applications. Uncertainties exist in most areas of civil and structural engineeri'1.g and rational design decisions cannot be made without modelling them and taking them into account. Many structural en gineers are shielded from having to think about such problems, at least when designing simple structures, because of the prescriptive and essentially deterministic nature of most codes of practice. This is an undesirable situation. Most loads and other structural design parameters are rarely known with certainty and should be regarded as random variables or stochastic processes, even if in design calculations they are eventually treated as deterministic. Some problems such as the analysis of load combinations cannot even be formulated without recourse to probabilistic reasoning.
