This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its profound insights, over three hundred chapters and more than four thousand scripture references in its eight books the Rationale Divinorum Officiorum (Rationale for the Divine Offices) stands in a class of its own. Written towards the end of the thirteenth century, the original, which was published in Latin, is the inspired opus of William Durandus, a highly regarded bishop of the time. Now, after more than seven centuries, it is possible for the English reader to discover the entire work of eight books along with an extensive index in seven volumes. However this work should not be regarded as a historical relic as the Ecclesiastical Offices have seen little change and most importantly, the spiritual foundations on which they rest are immutable. Furthermore, this work remains a primary authority on Western liturgies. Volume One of this translation contains the Author's Preface and Book One of this work. In his Preface Durandus points to the importance of the clergy having a sound understanding of the Offices and explains the various levels of spiritual interpretation the work presents. In Book One his focus is on the symbolic meaning of the church building and its parts. Here he examines not only the building but also at its contents and then cemeteries and other sacred and religious places. Durandus then moves on to examine the dedication of both church and altar. He concludes with a general consideration of the nature of the sacraments. The translator of this work, Janet Gentles, has spent over forty years exploring the spiritual foundations of both Christianity and Judaism as both assist in gaining an understanding of the profound teachings of the Bible. Her publication the Rationale Divinorum Officiorum, provides a substantial contribution to such understanding.

Book excerpt: Volume Two of this translation of the Rationale Divinorum Officiorum contains Books Two and Three of this work. Having dealt with the church and its parts in Book One Durandus moves on in Book Two to look at the ministers and orders of the Church and their obligations. The ten ministries he examines are those of the chanter, psalmist, usher, lector, exorcist, acolyte, subdeacon, deacon, priest, and bishop. In Book Three Durandus explains the vestments of priests, bishops and other officials. As with so much else in the Rationale Divinorum Officiorum the author shows the extensive degree to which the origin of these things can be found in the Old Testament. In these books, as throughout the entire work, Durandus continues to provide spiritual insights which may well be regarded as having been overlooked for too long a time.

Book excerpt: Volume Six of this translation of the Rationale Divinorum Officiorum contains Books Seven and Eight, which are the final two of this work. Book Seven presents a number of holy days and solemn feast days and while some of these are seldom marked in the Church today others are annually observed. In this book Durandus presents an extensive chapter on the Office for the Dead and here the reader will discover an early understanding of many practices which are still found today. Book Eight provides instruction on the nature of the calendar which was undoubtedly of considerable use in its time. Today the methods used are obsolete, nevertheless one can gain an understanding of how the civil and Church calendars were formed. It is also perhaps surprising that the methods of computation used in and before the thirteenth century, and which seem primitive to us today, were nevertheless accurate. The translator of this work, Janet Gentles, has spent over forty years exploring the spiritual foundations of both Christianity and Judaism as both assist in gaining an understanding of the profound teachings of the Bible. The Rationale Divinorum Officiorum provides a substantial contribution to such understanding.

Book excerpt: Volume Five of this translation of the Rationale Divinorum Officiorum contains Book Six of this work. Here consideration is given to the Offices of Sundays and their services, ember fasting, and other festivals. Through one hundred and forty-three chapters Durandus carries his readers through the liturgical year. In doing so he opens the door for his readers to a comprehensive understanding of the significance of the various parts of the annual Church cycle. This book provides an excellent companion as one journeys through the year. Indeed, its scope is so extensive a single year may well prove insufficient to fully absorb and appreciate all it contains. The translator of this work, Janet Gentles, has spent over forty years exploring the spiritual foundations of both Christianity and Judaism as both assist in gaining an understanding of the profound teachings of the Bible. Book excerpt: William Durand (c. 1230-Nov. 1, 1296), Bishop of Mende, France, was unquestionably the most renowned liturgical scholar of the later Middle Ages. His encyclopedic allegorical exposition of the rites and worship services of the Latin Church, the Rationale divinorum officiorum, or Rationale for the divine offices, is the best known medieval work in its genre. Divided into eight books of varying length, the Rationale is exhaustive in its treatment of a wide variety of subjects: the church building and liturgical art; the ministers of the church and their functions; liturgical vestments; the Mass and the Divine Office; the Church's calendar and its feast days.Modern scholarship has clearly shown that Durand's Rationale superseded all previous liturgical commentaries within only a few years of its publication (c. 1292-1296). By the end of the fifteenth century, it had become one of the most widely disseminated treatises of its kind in western Europe.Book 4, Durand's lengthy and detailed commentary on the Mass, has never been translated into English. The present volume makes this important text available for modern students of liturgy, musicology, theology, and art history for whom the original Latin text is not accessible. The present translation also provides extensive annotation and explanation of Durand's sometimes cryptic etymologies, while bringing to light important source material embedded within his commentary. The source text of this volume appeared in Corpus Christianorum Continuatio Mediaeualis as Guillelmus Durantus - Rationale divinorum officiorum IV (CCCM 140). References to the corresponding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation.

Book excerpt: Exploring processes of religious change in early-modern Scotland, this collection of essays takes a long-term perspective to consider developments in belief, identity, church structures and the social context of religion from the late-fifteenth century through to the mid-seventeenth century. The volume examines the ways in which tensions and conflicts with origins in the mid-sixteenth century continued to impact upon Scotland in the often violent seventeenth century, while also tracing deep continuities in Scotland's religious, cultural and intellectual life. The essays, the fruits of new research in the field, are united by a concern to appreciate fully the ambiguity of religious identity in post-Reformation Scotland, and to move beyond simplistic notions of a straightforward and unidirectional transition from Catholicism to Protestantism.

Book excerpt: Giovanni Andrea Gilio’s Dialogue on the Errors and Abuses of Painters (1564) is one of the first treatises on art published in the post-Tridentine period. It remains a key primary source for the discussion of the reform of art as it unfolded at the time of the Council of Trent and the Catholic Reformation. Relatively little is known about Gilio himself, a cleric from Fabriano, Italy. He was evidently familiar with Cardinal Alessandro Farnese’s lively court circle in Rome and dedicated his book to the cardinal. His text—available here in English in full for the first time—takes the form of a spirited dialogue among six protagonists, using the voices of each to present different points of view. Through their dialogue Gilio grapples with a host of issues, from the relationship between poetry and painting, to the function of religious images, to the effects such images have on viewers. The primary focus is the proper representation of history, and Michelangelo’s Last Judgment fresco in the Sistine Chapel is the exemplary case. Indeed, Michelangelo’s painting is both praised and condemned as an example of the possibilities and limits of art. Although Gilio’s dialogue is often quoted by art historians to point out the more controlling view of art and artists by the Roman Catholic Church, the unabridged text reveals the nuanced and provisional debates happening during this critical era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every Sunday around the world, Christians offer money and in-kind gifts to the church, traditionally known as alms. For communities that celebrate the Eucharist regularly, bread and wine, traditionally known as oblations, often accompany these gifts. What does it mean theologically for Christians to offer gifts to God, who first offered the greatest gift of Jesus Christ? This question regarding the role of alms and oblations in the liturgy was among the most controversial questions of the English Reformations in the sixteenth century. While the eucharistic prayer proper has often been the site of this theological controversy, the offertory rite has also received great attention. The 1552 English Book of Common Prayer excised all references to oblation in the offertory rite, but oblationary language and actions, such as the offertory procession, returned in full force by the twentieth century. The movement from the near elimination of oblation in the offertory rite to its widespread usage in the churches of the Anglican Communion is a remarkable liturgical and theological development. Using liturgical theology's tools of historical, textual, and contextual analyses, this book explores how this development occurred and why it is important for the church today.

The wealth of enameling preserved from the Treasury of the abbey of Grandmont, just outside Limoges, is due chiefly to the Plantagenet patronage of Henry II and his queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine. Enamels created during their reign resonate with the elegant style of the court, and the dramatic history of Henry's monarchy is evoked by such works as the.
