Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rigorous introduction to calculus in vector spaces The concepts and theorems of advanced calculus combined withrelated computational methods are essential to understanding nearlyall areas of quantitative science. Analysis in Vector Spacespresents the central results of this classic subject throughrigorous arguments, discussions, and examples. The book aims tocultivate not only knowledge of the major theoretical results, butalso the geometric intuition needed for both mathematicalproblem-solving and modeling in the formal sciences. The authors begin with an outline of key concepts, terminology, and notation and also provide a basic introduction to set theory, the properties of real numbers, and a review of linear algebra. Anelegant approach to eigenvector problems and the spectral theoremsets the stage for later results on volume and integration.Subsequent chapters present the major results of differential andintegral calculus of several variables as well as the theory ofmanifolds. Additional topical coverage includes: Sets and functions Real numbers Vector functions Normed vector spaces First- and higher-order derivatives Diffeomorphisms and manifolds Multiple integrals Integration on manifolds Stokes' theorem Basic point set topology Numerous examples and exercises are provided in each chapter toreinforce new concepts and to illustrate how results can be appliedto additional problems. Furthermore, proofs and examples arepresented in a clear style that emphasizes the underlying intuitiveideas. Counterexamples are provided throughout the book to warnagainst possible mistakes, and extensive appendices outline theconstruction of real numbers, include a fundamental result aboutdimension, and present general results about determinants. Assuming only a fundamental understanding of linear algebra andsingle variable calculus, Analysis in Vector Spaces is anexcellent book for a second course in analysis for mathematics, physics, computer science, and engineering majors at theundergraduate and graduate levels. It also serves as a valuablereference for further study in any discipline that requires a firmunderstanding of mathematical techniques and concepts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to find sufficient conditions under which a non-commutative version of the polynomial ring in two variables exists. The non-commutative rings we construct are non-commutative symmetric algebras over a two-sided vector space. After reviewing the definition of a two-sided vector space and giving some examples, we briefly recall the theory of simple two-sided vector spaces. We then assume k is a field of characteristic zero and t is transcendental over k and we find sufficient conditions under which a simple k-central two-sided vector space V over k(t) has left and right dimension two. Given such a V, and letting *V and V* denote the left and right duals we find conditions under which (Vi*, V(i+1)*, V(i+2)*) has a simultaneous for all i, i an integer. This condition implies the non-commutative symmetric algebra over V can be constructed. We conclude by exhibiting a five-dimensional family of simple k-central two-sided vector spaces over k(t) of left and right dimension two who non-commutative symmetric algebras exist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most basic algebraic varieties are the projective spaces, and rational varieties are their closest relatives. In many applications where algebraic varieties appear in mathematics and the sciences, we see rational ones emerging as the most interesting examples. The authors have given an elementary treatment of rationality questions using a mix of classical and modern methods. Arising from a summer school course taught by János Kollár, this book develops the modern theory of rational and nearly rational varieties at a level that will particularly suit graduate students. There are numerous examples and exercises, all of which are accompanied by fully worked out solutions, that will make this book ideal as the basis of a graduate course. It will act as a valuable reference for researchers whilst helping graduate students to reach the point where they can begin to tackle contemporary research problems.

Book excerpt: Abstract Algebra: A Gentle Introduction advantages a trend in mathematics textbook publishing towards smaller, less expensive and brief introductions to primary courses. The authors move away from the ‘everything for everyone’ approach so common in textbooks. Instead, they provide the reader with coverage of numerous algebraic topics to cover the most important areas of abstract algebra. Through a careful selection of topics, supported by interesting applications, the authors Intend the book to be used for a one-semester course in abstract algebra. It is suitable for an introductory course in for mathematics majors. The text is also very suitable for education majors who need to have an introduction to the topic. As textbooks go through various editions and authors employ the suggestions of numerous well-intentioned reviewers, these book become larger and larger and subsequently more expensive. This book is meant to counter that process. Here students are given a "gentle introduction," meant to provide enough for a course, yet also enough to encourage them toward future study of the topic. Features Groups before rings approach Interesting modern applications Appendix includes mathematical induction, the well-ordering principle, sets, functions, permutations, matrices, and complex nubers. Numerous exercises at the end of each section Chapter "Hint and Partial Solutions" offers built in solutions manual

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique text provides a geometric approach to group theory and linear algebra, bringing to light the interesting ways in which these subjects interact. Requiring few prerequisites beyond understanding the notion of a proof, the text aims to give students a strong foundation in both geometry and algebra. Starting with preliminaries (relations, elementary combinatorics, and induction), the book then proceeds to the core topics: the elements of the theory of groups and fields (Lagrange's Theorem, cosets, the complex numbers and the prime fields), matrix theory and matrix groups, determinants, vector spaces, linear mappings, eigentheory and diagonalization, Jordan decomposition and normal form, normal matrices, and quadratic forms. The final two chapters consist of a more intensive look at group theory, emphasizing orbit stabilizer methods, and an introduction to linear algebraic groups, which enriches the notion of a matrix group. Applications involving symm etry groups, determinants, linear coding theory and cryptography are interwoven throughout. Each section ends with ample practice problems assisting the reader to better understand the material. Some of the applications are illustrated in the chapter appendices. The author's unique melding of topics evolved from a two semester course that he taught at the University of British Columbia consisting of an undergraduate honors course on abstract linear algebra and a similar course on the theory of groups. The combined content from both makes this rare text ideal for a year-long course, covering more material than most linear algebra texts. It is also optimal for independent study and as a supplementary text for various professional applications. Advanced undergraduate or graduate students in mathematics, physics, computer science and engineering will find this book both useful and enjoyable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume shows how it is possible to further develop and essentially extend the theory of operators in infinite-dimensional vector spaces, which plays an important role in mathematics, physics, information theory, and control theory. The book describes new mathematical structures, such as hypernorms, hyperseminorms, hypermetrics, semitopological vector spaces, hypernormed vector spaces, and hyperseminormed vector spaces. It develops mathematical tools for the further development of functional analysis and broadening of its applications. Exploration of semitopological vector spaces, hypernormed vector spaces, hyperseminormed vector spaces, and hypermetric vector spaces is the main topic of this book. A new direction in functional analysis, called quantum functional analysis, has been developed based on polinormed and multinormed vector spaces and linear algebras. At the same time, normed vector spaces and topological vector spaces play an important role in physics and in control theory. To make this book comprehendible for the reader and more suitable for students with some basic knowledge in mathematics, denotations and definitions of the main mathematical concepts and structures used in the book are included in the appendix, making the book useful for enhancing traditional courses of calculus for undergraduates, as well as for separate courses for graduate students. The material of Semitopological Vector Spaces: Hypernorms, Hyperseminorms and Operators is closely related to what is taught at colleges and universities. It is possible to use a definite number of statements from the book as exercises for students because their proofs are not given in the book but left for the reader.
