Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rational Theology and Christian Philosophy, Vol. 1 of 2: In England in the Seventeenth Century My aim in these volumes has been to describe a movement hitherto imperfectly understood. In depicting the great struggle of the seventeenth century in England, our historians have very much confined their view to the two chief parties betwixt whom it may be said to have been fought out. The religious forces of the time, which influenced so deeply the national history, have been roughly classified as Prelatical on one side, and Puritan on the other. In point of fact these forces were extremely various and complicated; and we still wait an adequate account of them - a great history of this great period, which shall do justice to all the impulses then moving the national mind, and the powerful characters which they called forth. We may have to wait long. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative and Rational Christian ScienceIf God should select you to deliver a message to his people, -what would you do with the message? Would you give it to the people as instructed, or keep it your self and copyright it, and sell it to the good people who thirst after Truth, charging them exorbitant prices? When you find. Any cult claiming to have a special reve lation, which is the only truth that God has given his people, it is pretty safe to class them with impostors, but if you discover that they are using religion as work ing capital for accumulating wealth, then you can very easily render a decision. People who have never in vestigated the laws and power of suggestion are often misled when they learn of cures being effected by the different cults. The author will aim to prove, that cures are no proof whatever concerning the genuine ness of the philosophy advocated by the promoters of these cults. He will also aim to show how thousands of people who are suffering from mental and physical ailments, can be greatly relieved without surrendering their good common-sense to any false doctoring.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Infinite and the Old Theology The following pages have been written under the stress of that conviction, which the intervening years have but deepened and confirmed. Rational theology is a legitimate and venerable member of the great family of spiritual enterprises of man: natural science, philosophy, jurisprudence, religion, art, mathematics, theology. These are all of them children of one great passion: the imperious craving of the human spirit for an inner ideal adjustment of life to the tragic limitations of life in a flowing world. The distinctive problems of rational theology are regarded as in a special sense originating in what may be called the supernalizing tendence or power of the human mind. This propensity or power, so strange and so famil iar in every category of the understanding, ever and everywhere manifesting the pres ence of a kind of divine energy in the world, is a 'natural' agency, being at once a human faculty and a cosmic force, deeper than will; and so rational theology is con ceived to be a species of 'natural' science that branch of it which has for its special task to study and to appraise the phenomena of Idealization. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Philosophy, Vol. 1 Christian philosophy is necessarily founded upon conceptions of the nature of God, of the origin and nature of the universe, and of the relation of God to the universe and to man. In our time, the greatest con fusion exists, even within the precincts of the Christian chui ch, with regard to these fundamental ideas and conceptions which contradict each other are recognized, either from an external eclecticism, or from an internal inversion by the Destructive Reason with the view to confound opposite ideas in the interest of a nihilistic or of a pantheistic philosophy. This perversion and inver Sion of Christian thought are produced by transcendental philosophy (german in origin) and by evolutionary sci ence (english in origin), which work together to establish in the Church an Antichristian, materialistic, and panthe istic philosophy. There is, in our century, and extending to all departments of intelligence, a renaissance of Pagan thought quite analogous to that effected in the fifteenth century and onward, and our period, equally with that, calls for a new birth or regeneration of Christian thought from a more universal insight into the fundamental ideas of Christianity. From 'the very need of it, therefore, we may look for a new dogmatic form of Christian theology that shall iflcorporate the fundamental and primitive ideas of Christianity, as an historical institution, in forms of imaginative thought which Shall correspond to that more internal condition of the Reason and of the Re.
