Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spinoza in English,/i is the first bibliography to document the entire 300-year record of books, monographs, dissertations and articles in English on Benedict Spinoza, as well as all translations of his works into English. Arranged alphabetically by author or editor, and internally cross-referenced in the case of anthologies and 'replies', this bibliography cites its own sources where appropriate and, in many cases, provides details on how to obtain out-of-print titles and unpublished dissertations. Additionally, it restores or corrects a good deal of earlier bibliographic detail and, beginning with titles from the mid-1800s, presents the citations in a uniform style. This second edition adds hundreds of citations, including dozens of titles hitherto overlooked, thus bringing the total to nearly 2700 on the main level (with hundreds of secondary references to later editions and reprints). It also provides an index and, occasionally, an abstract when the author's title inadequately describes the contents. As the only source of its kind, this bibliography is an indispensable reference tool for research libraries and individual scholars concerned with the life and works of Spinoza. Wayne Boucher's introduction is augmented by a preface by Professor Manfred Walther. --the most complete bibliography of works in English on Spinoza --enlarged, corrected and improved from first edition with numbered entries --uniquely comprehensive, current and authoritative --numbered entries and subject/title index for easy reference

Book excerpt: This is the first collection of Spinoza studies that deals exclusively with the language, style, and the transmission and editing of his texts. It includes investigations into the authorship of some minor texts, Spinoza’s Latinity, the Hebrew passages in the Tractatus theologico-politicus, his way of handling quotations and his use of the first person singular. It contains a full concordance of the Tractatus de intellectus emendatione, an inventory of the copies of Spinoza’s Posthumous Works in the Netherlands and an account of the editions produced in the nineteenth century. In addition, there are essays on the life and thought of Spinoza’s publisher Jan Rieuwertsz, on the question of who printed his books, and on principles and choices in editing. Contributors include: Fokke Akkerman, Wout Jac. van Bekkum, Michelle Beyssade, Eugenio Canone, Johan Gerritsen, Iiro Kajanto, Jelle Kingma, Jacqueline Lagrée, J.H. Leopold, Clasina G. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The 17th century philosopher Spinoza faces a contemporary panel of fourteen philosophers. Spinoza’s Ethics, Politics, and his philosophy of mind are examined in the first half of this singular critique. The second half, devoted to Spinoza’s epistemology and metaphysics, completes the array of his ideas. Spinoza has always provoked strong reaction. He was driven from the Temple in Amsterdam for his heretical views. The next century extolled him as the savior of rational religion. Here, the 20th century begins to come to terms with this most disturbing philosopher. Stuart Hampshire, William Frankena and Frederick C. Copleston are among the modern thinkers who clarify and do battle with Spinoza’s major concepts. This is a crucial and exciting work in which living philosophy makes use of its past to reach out to new ideas. The scholarly bibliography complements this unique presentation, making it an invaluable asset for students.”- Publisher

Spinoza's moral philosophy, in particular, points to a radical way of understanding how human beings can become free and enjoy supreme happiness. And yet, there is still much disagreement about how exactly Spinoza's recipe is supposed to work. For long time, Spinoza has been presented as an arch rationalist who would identify in the purely intellectual cultivation of reason the key for ethical progress. Andrea Sangiacomo offers a new understanding of Spinoza's project, by showing how he himself struggled during his career to develop a moral philosophy that could speak to human beings as they actually are (imperfect, passionate, often not very rational). Spinoza's views significantly evolved over time. In his early writings, Spinoza's account of ethical progress towards the Supreme Good relies mostly on the idea that the mind can build on its innate knowledge to resist the power of the passions. Although appropriate social conditions may support the individual's pursuit of the Supreme Good, achieving it does not depend essentially on social factors. In Spinoza's later writings, however, the emphasis shifts towards the mind's need to rely on appropriate forms of social cooperation. Reason becomes the mental expression of the way the human body interacts with external causes on the basis of some degree of agreement in nature with them. The greater the agreement, the greater the power of reason to adequately understand universal features as well as more specific traits of the external causes. In the case of human beings, certain kinds of social cooperation are crucial for the development of reason. This view has crucial ramifications for Spinoza's account of how individuals can progress towards the Supreme Good and how a political science based on Spinoza's principles can contribute to this goal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Treatise on the Emendation of the Intellect etc., which we give you here, kind reader, in its unfinished [that is, defective] state, was written by the author many years ago now. He always intended to finish it. But hindered by other occupations, and finally snatched away by death, he was unable to bring it to the desired conclusion. But since it contains many excellent and useful things, which--we have no doubt--will be of great benefit to anyone sincerely seeking the truth, we did not wish to deprive you of them. And so that you would be aware of, and find less difficult to excuse, the many things that are still obscure, rough, and unpolished, we wished to warn you of them. Farewell.
