Book excerpt: Two methods are presented for the analysis of tunnel support loading caused by rock failure. In the first part closed-form solutions are used; in the second, numerical techniques. Emphasis is put upon the statical indeterminacy of the problem and upon the necessity for considering the relative displacements between ground and support. From this follows the need for a realistic calculation of the stiffness of ground and support, as well as the need to consider the sequential development of the interaction between these two elements. It is assumed that the rock mass behavior during failure is softening and dilatant. Interface problems between ground and support that can strongly influence the effective support stiffness are discussed.

Book Synopsis Notes on Numerical Modeling in Geomechanics by : William G. Pariseau
Download or read book Notes on Numerical Modeling in Geomechanics written by William G. Pariseau and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to numerical analysis in geomechanics and is intended for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate study of the mechanics of porous, jointed rocks and soils. Although familiarity with the concepts of stress, strain and so on is assumed, a review of the fundamentals of solid mechanics including concepts of physical laws, kinematics and material laws is presented in an appendix. Emphasis is on the popular finite element method but brief explanations of the boundary element method, the distinct element method (also known as the discrete element method) and discontinuous deformation analysis are included. Familiarity with a computer programming language such as Fortran, C++ or Python is not required, although programming excerpts in Fortran are presented at the end of some chapters. This work begins with an intuitive approach to interpolation over a triangular element and thus avoids making the simple complex by not doing energy minimization via a calculus of variations approach so often found in reference books on the finite element method. The presentation then proceeds to a principal of virtual work via the well-known divergence theorem to obtain element equilibrium and then global equilibrium, both expressed as stiffness equations relating force to displacement. Solution methods for the finite element approach including elimination and iteration methods are discussed. Hydro-mechanical coupling is described and extension of the finite element method to accommodate fluid flow in porous geological media is made. Example problems illustrate important concepts throughout the text. Additional problems for a 15-week course of study are presented in an appendix; solutions are given in another appendix.

Book Synopsis Sustainable Design and Construction for Geomaterials and Geostructures by : Behzad Fatahi
Download or read book Sustainable Design and Construction for Geomaterials and Geostructures written by Behzad Fatahi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents recent research findings and critically reviews the existing literature related to assessment of geotechnical structures under complex and extreme loading conditions such as cyclic, seismic and blast loads. Special emphasize is given to experimental assessment of behaviors of soils and rocks in tunneling , while advanced numerical modelling techniques are utilized for modelling and accurate predictions in emerging construction projects such as tunneling and embankments. The book is in line with current trends in civil engineering which are moving towards sustainable design and construction addressing the energy and material challenges. Papers were selected from the 5th GeoChina International Conference 2018 – Civil Infrastructures Confronting Severe Weathers and Climate Changes: From Failure to Sustainability, held on July 23 to 25, 2018 in HangZhou, China.
