It investigates linearly combined motion comp- sated signals and generalizes the well known superposition for bidirectional prediction in B-pictures. The number of superimposed signals and the sel- tion of reference pictures will be important aspects of the discussion. The application oriented part of the book employs this concept to the well known ITU-T Recommendation H.263 and continues with the improvements by superimposed motion-compensated signals for the emerging ITU-T R- ommendation H.264 and ISO/IEC MPEG-4 (Part 10). In addition, it discusses a new approach for wavelet-based video coding. This technology is currently investigated by MPEG to develop a new video compression standard for the mid-term future.

Book excerpt: One of the most intriguing problems in video processing is the removal of the redundancy or the compression of a video signal. There are a large number of applications which depend on video compression. Data compression represents the enabling technology behind the multimedia and digital television revolution. In motion compensated lossy video compression the original video sequence is first split into three new sources of information, segmentation, motion and residual error. These three information sources are then quantized, leading to a reduced rate for their representation but also to a distorted reconstructed video sequence. After the decomposition of the original source into segmentation, mo tion and residual error information is decided, the key remaining problem is the allocation of the available bits into these three sources of information. In this monograph a theory is developed which provides a solution to this fundamental bit allocation problem. It can be applied to all quad-tree-based motion com pensated video coders which use a first order differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) scheme for the encoding of the displacement vector field (DVF) and a block-based transform scheme for the encoding of the displaced frame differ ence (DFD). An optimal motion estimator which results in the smallest DFD energy for a given bit rate for the encoding of the DVF is also a result of this theory. Such a motion estimator is used to formulate a motion compensated interpolation scheme which incorporates a global smoothness constraint for the DVF.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rate-Quality Optimized Video Coding discusses the matter of optimizing (or negotiating) the data rate of compressed digital video and its quality, which has been a relatively neglected topic in either side of image/video coding and tele-traffic management. Video rate management becomes a technically challenging task since it is required to maintain a certain video quality regardless of the availability of transmission or storage media. This is caused by the broadband nature of digital video and inherent algorithmic features of mainstream video compression schemes, e.g. H.261, H.263 and MPEG series. In order to maximize the media utilization and to enhance video quality, the data rate of compressed video should be regulated within a budget of available media resources while maintaining the video quality as high as possible. In Part I (Chapters 1 to 4) the non-stationarity of digital video is discussed. Since the non-stationary nature is also inherited from algorithmic properties of international video coding standards, which are a combination of statistical coding techniques, the video rate management techniques of these standards are explored. Although there is a series of known video rate control techniques, such as picture rate variation, frame dropping, etc., these techniques do not view the matter as an optimization between rate and quality. From the view of rate-quality optimization, the quantizer is the sole means of controling rate and quality. Thus, quantizers and quantizer control techniques are analyzed, based on the relationship of rate and quality. In Part II (Chapters 5 and 6), as a coherent approach to non-stationary video, established but still thriving nonlinear techniques are applied to video rate-quality optimization such as artificial neural networks including radical basis function networks, and fuzzy logic-based schemes. Conventional linear techniques are also described before the nonlinear techniques are explored. By using these nonlinear techniques, it is shown how they influence and tackle the rate-quality optimization problem. Finally, in Chapter 7 rate-quality optimization issues are reviewed in emerging video communication applications such as video transcoding and mobile video. This chapter discusses some new issues and prospects of rate and quality control in those technology areas. Rate-Quality Optimized Video Coding is an excellent reference and can be used for advanced courses on the topic.

Book excerpt: The object of this dissertation is to investigate rate-distortion optimization and to evaluate the prospects of adaptive vector quantization for digital video compression. Rate-distortion optimization aims to improve compression performance using discrete optimization algorithms. We first describe and classify algorithms that have been developed in the literature to date. One algorithms is extended in order to make it generally applicable; the correctness of this new procedure is proven. Moreover, we compare the complexity of the aforesaid algorithms, first implementation-independent and then by run-time experiments. Finally, we propose a technique to speed up one of the aforementioned algorithms. Adaptive vector quantization enables adaption to sources with unknown or non-stationary statistics. This feature is important for digital video data since the statistics of two subsequent frames is usually similar, but in the long run the general statistics of frames may change even if scene changes are neglected. We examine combinations of adaptive vector quantization with various state-of-the-art video compression techniques. First we present an adaptive vector quantization based codec that is able to encode and decode in real-time using current PC technology. This codec is rate-distortion optimized and adaptive vector quantization is applied in the wavelet transform domain. The organization of the wavelet coefficients is then made more efficient using adaptive partition techniques. Moreover, the main adaptability mechanism of adaptive vector quantization, the so-called codebook update, is studied. Finally, a combination of adaptive vector quantization and motion compensation is taken into consideration. We show that for very low bitrates adaptive vector quantization performs on prediction residual frames better or at least as well as discrete cosine transform coding.

Book excerpt: The goal in video compression is to remove the redundancy in a video sequence while preserving its fidelity. Motion estimation can significantly improve video coding efficiency by reducing temporal redundancy. In this thesis we focus on new methods for motion estimation with applications in low complexity video compression. In this thesis we study the performance of low complexity video coding. Theoretical rate-distortion performance is derived and evaluated for both low complexity video coding and conventional motion-compensated prediction (MCP) based video coding. Based on our analysis of sub-pixel and multi-reference motion search methods used to improve low complexity video coding efficiency, we propose a new refined side motion estimation method to better extract motion information at the video decoder. Motion side estimation methods in general assume a motion model in a video sequence and use computationally intensive motion search. In this thesis we propose a novel side information estimation method based on universal prediction. Our method does not assume an underlying motion model. Instead, it makes predictions based on its observation of the past video information. The experimental results show that this new method can significantly reduce the computational complexity while achieving comparable performance for many video sequences. Lossy image and video compression is often accompanied by annoying artifacts. In this thesis we present a transform domain Markov Random Field model to address the artifact reduction. We present two methods, which we denote as TD-MRF and TSD-MRF, based on this model. We show by objective and subjective comparisons that transform domain post processing methods can substantially reduce the computational complexity compared with conventional spatial domain method and still achieve significant artifact reduction.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part 10 of MPEG-4 describes the Advanced Video Coding (AVC) method widely known as H.264. H.264 is the product of a collaborative effort known as the Joint Video Team(JVT). The final draft of the standard was completed in May of 2003 and since then H.264 has become one of the most commonly used formats for compression [1]. H.264, unlike previous standards, describes a myriad of coding options that involve variable block size inter prediction methods, nine different intra prediction modes, multi frame prediction and B frame prediction. There are a huge number of options for coding that will tend to generate a different number of coded bits and different reconstruction quality. A video encoder is challenged to minimize coded bitrate and maximize quality. However, choosing the coding mode of a macroblock to achieve this is a difficult problem due to the large number of coding combinations and parameters. Rate Distortion Optimization is an effective technique for choosing the 'best' coding mode for a macroblock. This thesis presents two features of an H.264 encoder, multi frame prediction and B frame prediction. Additionally, a Rate Distortion Optimization scheme is implemented with the features to improve overall performance of the encoder.

Within the last 5-10 years, the demand for multimedia applications has increased enormously. Like many other recent developments, the materialization of image and video encoding is due to the contribution from major areas like good network access, good amount of fast processors e.t.c. Many standardization procedures were carrried out for the development of image and video coding. The advancement of computer storage technology continues at a rapid pace as a means of reducing storage requirements of an image and video as most situation warrants. Thus, the science of digital video compression/coding has emerged. This storage capacity seems to be more impressive when it is realized that the intent is to deliver very high quality video to the end user with as few visible artifacts as possible. Current methods of video compression such as Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) standard provide good performance in terms of retaining video quality while reducing the storage requirements. Many books are available for video coding fundamentals. This book is the research outcome of various Researchers and Professors who have contributed a might in this field. This book suits researchers doing their research in the area of video coding. The understanding of fundamentals of video coding is essential for the reader before reading this book. The book revolves around three different challenges namely (i) Coding strategies (coding efficiency and computational complexity), (ii) Video compression and (iii) Error resilience. The complete efficient video system depends upon source coding, proper inter and intra frame coding, emerging newer transform, quantization techniques and proper error concealment. The book gives the solution of all the challenges and is available in different sections.

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Video has become a key part of our daily digital lives. An increasing number of people are using video to document their lives and share their experiences through , sites such as YouTube and Facebook. Due to this ever increasing quantity of video content, it is clear that more efficient and robust video compression algorithms are needed. In this thesis video compression and transmission are investigated, specifically focused on High Definition (HD) video coding and wireless transmission. Unfor- tunately, the techniques relied upon for efficient compression are the same tech- niques that hinder robustness. This is because conventional video compression relies on inter-frame prediction (motion estimation), intra frame prediction and variable- length entropy encoding to achieve high compression ratios but, as a consequence, produces an encoded bitstream that is inherently sensitive to channel errors. There- fore, in order to ensure reliable and robust delivery over lossy channels, it is necessary to invoke various additional error detection and correction methods. In this thesis a technique called Pyramid Vector Quantisation (PVQ) is investig- ated. In contrast to the other methods, Pyramid Vector Quantisation has the ability to prevent error propagation through the use of fixed length codewords. This thesis introduces an efficient Rate Distortion Optimisation (RDO) algorithm for intra- mode PVQ which offers similar compression performance and visual quality to intra H.264/ AVC, intra VC-I, VC-3 and Motion JPEG 2000 while offering outstanding inherent error resilience. The results are reported for a range of representative 1080p HD video sequences. The error resilience performance of the enhanced PVQ codec is then evaluated for HD content in the context of a realistic (IEEE 802.11n) wireless environment. The impact of both uncorrelated and correlated channel errors is investigated. It is shown that PVQ provides high tolerance to corrupted data compared to the state-of-the- art H.264/ AVC while obviating the need for complex encoding tools. PVQ (without explicit error resilience tools and without error concealment) is able to significantly outperform H.264/ AVC (with error resilience tools and with error concealment) by up to I3.3dB PSNR for the same wireless simulation scenario. The benefit obtained by employing a Gaussian Markov Random Field (GMRF) based wavelet domain error concealment algorithm to post process erroneously re- ceived PVQ bitstreams is also investigated. It is shown that this algorithm leads to a further 2.5dB performance gain thus outperforming H.264/ AVC by up to 15.8dB PSNR. Overall, it is hoped that the results of this thesis demonstrate PVQ's feasib- ility for in-home HD video coding and transmission.
