Book Synopsis The Lichens of British Columbia by : Trevor Goward
Download or read book The Lichens of British Columbia written by Trevor Goward and published by Ministry of Forests Research Program. This book was released on 1994 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual provides illustrated keys to all leaf and scale lichens known to occur in British Columbia. In total, 327 species are included, while 19 taxa are excluded from earlier accounts of the flora. Accompanying the keys are approximately 350 line drawings. The manual briefly summarizes the ecology, distribution, and frequency status of the province's foliose and squamulose lichens. Each genus account provides a common name, a short description, pertinent references, notes on the derivation of the common name, and notes on global status and distribution, taxonomy, chemistry, and/or similar genera. Each species account provides species and author citation, distribution maps, common names, habit, and lichen distribution in B.C.

Download or read book Status Report on the Cryptic Paw Lichen, Nephroma Occultum, in Canada written by Trevor Goward and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nephroma occultum (Cryptic Modest Lichen) is a member of the Nephromataceae (or Peltigeraceae) known to occur in Canada only in the humid, primarily old growth forests of British Columbia. It is a rounded, loosely appressed, foliose (leaf) lichen. This report provides species information such as description, biological and economic significance, distribution, environment and habitat characteristics, population biology, population ecology, land ownership and management responsibility, management practices and experience, evidence of threats to survival, and legal or other formal status. It goes on to offer an assessment of the status for the species and information sources.
Book Synopsis An Effective Detection Strategy and Determining Critical Habitat Characteristics for Boreal Felt Lichen (Erioderma Pedicellatum) in Newfoundland, Canada by : Patrick Lauriault
Download or read book An Effective Detection Strategy and Determining Critical Habitat Characteristics for Boreal Felt Lichen (Erioderma Pedicellatum) in Newfoundland, Canada written by Patrick Lauriault and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boreal felt lichen (Erioderma pedicellatum) is a rare lichen that is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN. On the island of Newfoundland, Canada, the Central Avalon Forest Ecoregion is a hotspot for this species. The population in this region is relatively abundant, providing an opportunity to study its habitat requirements. I used occupied and unoccupied plots (each 5 m radius) to test critical habitat for boreal felt lichen. To ensure I effectively detected lichens in our plots, I developed a decoy lichen experiment to test the detection probability of these lichens. I applied the results from the decoy experiment to the habitat study. Although I could not consider time in the study, I discussed how the shortened lifespan of the host tree may constrain the temporal niche of boreal felt lichen. I identified critical habitat for boreal felt lichen, which will contribute to informed land use to help protect this population.
Book Synopsis Lichens of North America by : Irwin M. Brodo
Download or read book Lichens of North America written by Irwin M. Brodo and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 838 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lichens are a unique form of plant life, the product of a symbiotic association between an alga and a fungus. The beauty and importance of lichens have long been overlooked, despite their abundance and diversity in most parts of North America and elsewhere in the world. This stunning book--the first accessible and authoritative guidebook to lichens of the North American continent--fills the gap, presenting superb color photographs, descriptions, distribution maps, and keys for identifying the most common, conspicuous, or ecologically significant species. The book focuses on 805 foliose, fruticose, and crustose lichens (the latter rarely included in popular guidebooks) and presents information on another 700 species in the keys or notes; special attention is given to species endemic to North America. A comprehensive introduction discusses the biology, structure, uses, and ecological significance of lichens and is illustrated with 90 additional color photos and many line drawings. English names are provided for most species, and the book also includes a glossary that explains technical terms. This visually rich and informative book will open the eyes of nature lovers everywhere to the fascinating world of lichens.

Book Synopsis Status Report on Lichens at Risk in Canada by :
Download or read book Status Report on Lichens at Risk in Canada written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pseudocyphellaria rainierensis, or oldgrowth specklebelly lichen, occurs in humid, oceanic, old growth forests at low to moderate elevations in western North America. In Canada, it has a distinctly restricted distribution, being found at only a few localities on the Pacific coast, Queen Charlotte Islands, and Vancouver Island. This report describes the species and reviews its geographic distribution, biological and economic significance, biogeographic and phylogenetic history, general environment and habitat characteristics, population size and trends, general biology, factors limiting the survival and spread of the species, population biology and ecology, and reproductive ecology. Finally, the current status of the species is assessed along with its future prognosis, and a conservation status ranking is recommended.
