This book was released on 2016-05-25 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by Alfred Russel Wallace was originally published in 1858 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'On the Tendency of Varieties to Depart Indefinitely From the Original Type' is a short article on variation and evolutionary theory. Alfred Russel Wallace was born on 8th January 1823 in the village of Llanbadoc, in Monmouthshire, Wales. Wallace was inspired by the travelling naturalists of the day and decided to begin his exploration career collecting specimens in the Amazon rainforest. He explored the Rio Negra for four years, making notes on the peoples and languages he encountered as well as the geography, flora, and fauna. While travelling, Wallace refined his thoughts about evolution and in 1858 he outlined his theory of natural selection in an article he sent to Charles Darwin. Wallace made a huge contribution to the natural sciences and he will continue to be remembered as one of the key figures in the development of evolutionary theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making and Unmaking Ancient Memory explores the way in which ancient Greeks and Romans represented their past, and in turn how modern literature and scholarship has approached the reception and transmission of some aspects of ancient culture. The contributions, organised into three sections – Political Legacies, Religious Identities, and Literary Traditions – explore case studies in memory and reception of the past. Through studying the techniques and strategies of ancient historiography, biography, hagiography, and art, as well as their effectiveness, this volume demonstrates how humanity has inevitably conveyed memory and history with (sub)conscious biases and preconceived ideas. In the current age of alternative facts, fake news, and post-truth discourses, these chapters highlight that such phenomena are by no means a recent development. This book offers valuable scholarly perspectives to academics and scholars interested in memory, historiography, and representations of the past in the ancient world, as well as those working on literary traditions and reception studies more broadly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This modestly-entitled work by a former member of the Bengal Civil Service is in fact more like a well-researched essay than a miscellaneous collection of notes. It pays considerable attention to Java's history, though its coverage is rather patchy by modern standards, and many names are mis-spelled. It has a few interesting insights on the situation at the time of the author's visit (1889), such as the prosperous appearance of the Javanese, especially the children, the domination of trade by women, and the absence of any sign of Islam. But its main interest is the author's favorable opinion of the economic management of Java by the Dutch, as compared with the British in India. He particularly commends the Dutch refusal to introduce individual property rights to land. He does predict however (correctly) that the growth of Java's population will lead to economic problems in the future. He is also unusual among British colonial administrators of the 19th century in suggesting that the Western way of doing things is not invariably the best one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brice Marden's art is deceptively austere. Within the seemingly narrow color range of his paintings and drawings, he orchestrates remarkable thematic variations of color, light, scale and mood. His monochromatic gray palette of the 1960s, expressing a "vocabulary of ambiguities,'' gave way to limpid motions and a neoclassical exploration of color-and-light relationships. Kertess, a curator at New York City's Whitney Museum, links the elemental grace of Marden's more recent works to this American artist's summer sojourns on Hydra, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. In Marden's organic, cellular structures, Kertess sees the influence of Chinese calligraphy and Marden's trips to the Far East. Illustrated with 158 plates (133 in color), this handsome monograph follows Marden's metamorphosis from a pure abstractionist to an artist seeking to objectify the spiritual, as he does in his Annunciation series and in the Elements, which are symbolic paintings rooted in medieval alchemy.
