Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Historical Documents 1000-1904 NO final history of the United States of America has been written, or is likely to be written. Research is constantly bringing to light new facts that correct details or modify the traditional view Of larger ques tions; and the most impartial historian is subject to personal 01 sec tional bias which leads to his works being regarded as imperfect by another generation, or as unfair by the people Of parts Of the country other than his own. In such a series as the present, then, it is unwise to represent the story of the growth of this nation by the summary of any one scholar. The alternative has been to place before the reader a selection Of the most important documents which record in contemporary terms the great events in the history of the country. Beginning with the personal records of the earliest discoverers of the continent, the selection goes on to present the first attempts at organizing a machinery of government made by the first settlers Of the New England colonies; proceeds to the landmarks of the struggle for independence and the formation of the Constitution; Shows the laying Of the foundation of national policies and of the interpretation of the Constitution; indicates by the texts of the treaties themselves the acquisition of each successive increase of terri tory; and reveals by the original state papers the main causes and effects Of the wars in which the country has from time to time been engaged. Read in succession, these documents afford a condensed view of the politiml progress Of the American people; freed from any prejudice save that which swayed the makers of the history themselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamentals of American Government: Including the Great Documents on Which Its Institutions Are Founded and the Statutes Relating to Naturalization and Expatriation, With an Introduction and Explanatory Notes The title of the book shows what it is, or, at least, what it is intended to be. It is prepared primarily for the information of foreigners intending to become Ameri can citizens; but it is hoped that it will also be useful to experienced citizens, and to native Americans coming into citizenship. The chief purpose of the book is the presentation in convenient form of the four great docu ments which compose the foundation of our government, namely, Magna Charta, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution of the United States. These have been preceded by a gen eral introduction, in which I have tried to set forth, as briefly as practicable, the elements of our system of gov ernment, the relations sustained by the states to one another and to the nation, and also some Observations on the rights, privileges, immunities, and duties of citizens. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Government Documents: State and City Arrangement - In any but the very largest libraries, that not only preserve collected editions but duplicate these with separate departmental editions, government documents will be shelved like any other books. A separate room, alcove, or shelf for such books is not necessary. Whether single volumes or continuing sets, they will be classified with other books on the same subjects on the safe principle that all the material in a library on the same subject should be in the fewest possible different places. In the largest libraries, which keep practically all govern ment documents, the matter of arrangement presents too many different aspects for consideration in a pamphlet of this Size. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New American History and Government Outlines History is the study of the life of a people. "History is the biography of a society." "History is the essence of innumerable biographies." "Through the ages one increasing purpose runs." "The present is the fruit of the past and the germs of the future." "History knows not if, and might have been is a form of words unwritten in her book of phrases." - Ridpath. Europe Before the Discovery of America Peoples supposed to have visited America before 1492: Chinese, Egyptians. Phoenicians and Greeks. Northmen, 1000. Events hindering further visits: Invasions of Goths, Vandals and Huns, 350 to 476. Establishment of new nations. Conquest among nations. Lack of geographical knowledge. Causes leading to a revival of interest in new lands: Commercial ambition. Religious zeal. The crusades. The renaissance. What ancient Europe sent to the East: Metals, wood, pitch, woolen cloth, linen, black lead, wine and glassware. What ancient Europe brought from the East: Silks, cotton cloth and other fine dry goods. Dye woods and drugs. Precious stones and ivory. Spices and perfumes. Cities which controlled trade with the East: Venice, by way of the Mediterranean, the Red Sea and the Indian ocean. Genoa, by way of Bosporus and Black Sea, and then by caravan to the East. Antioch, by way of Euphrates valley and Persian gulf. What changed trade routes: In 1453 the Turks captured Constantinople and refused to let the ships of other nations pass through the Bosporus. This closed Genoa's route, gave Venice a monopoly and made a new route desirable. New routes tried: Passage around Africa by Diaz, a Portuguese sailor, who succeeded in sailing around the south cape, which he named Cape of Storms, but the name was changed to Cape of Good Hope by King John of Portugal. Columbus' plan: To sail west until he reached China or India. "The great canon of history is its continuity." This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to the Archives of the Government of the United States in Washington The indexing of the records varies also with different file-rooms. In general the indexes make any particular letter or paper easily accessible, but do not aid in finding the papers of any one class or on any particular subject, and hence are of slight service in preparing a general description of the records. The older indexes are of little value for any purpose what soever; and the index-books that were in general use until a few years ago are so complicated that their use by the uninitiated is extremely difficult. The system of indexing by means of cards is, however, rapidly coming into use. Another difficulty encountered was the inconvenient or even inaccessible location of a part of the material. In several offices the earlier records are boxed up and stored in vaults or attics; in others they are hidden behind piles of lumber or large cases. In still other offices, while the records are actually accessible, considerable physical discomfort is attendant upon an examination of them. The mere mass of these records of the government is well-nigh appalling. It is impossible to form an estimate of the aggregate space occupied by them; in a single office of the Treasury Department, for example, they cover over ten miles of shelving; the volumes of diplomatic and consular correspondence in the State Department are to be numbered by thousands; a few years ago the Adj utant-general reported that in addition to several tons of Confederate records already described there were over ten tons of books and papers, the character of which had not as yet been ascertained. In some departments entire buildings are rented for no other purpose than that of filling them from cellar to attic with records and files that are not in immediate demand in the prosecution of current work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Documents on Federal Relations: The States and the United States; Number II., State Rights and the War of 1812; 1809-1815 Now the State of Louisiana lies without those limits; and on this distinction the whole question of constitutional right depends. The power, assumed by Congress, in passing this act for the admission of Louisiana, if acquiesced in, is plainly a power to admit new States into this Union, at their discretion, without limit of place or Country. Not only new States may be carved, at will, out of the boundless regions of Louisiana, but the whole ex tent of South America, indeed of the globe, is a sphere, within which it may operate without check or control, and with no other limit than such as Congress may choose to impose on its own dis cretion. [here follows a detailed examination of the Constitution in refutation of the constitutionality of annexation and admission of new States. This book was released on 2018-04-28 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Partial List of Bibliographies in the Congressional Set of U. S. Government Documents The fact that there is a large number of bibliographies con tained in the U. 8. Government publications is probably known to the scholar, but not to the general reader. These bibliographies differ greatly in subject and scope and though not always purporting to be complete show a careful selection of authorities. The use of these bibliographies is lessened by the fact that there is no list of them.available. The government indexes make note of some of them, but they cannot all be found here. Several of the U. S. Govern mental bodies have issued lists of their publications in which one may find a list of the bibliographies published by them, such.bodies are the Smithsonian institution and the Geological survey, but the majority of bodies in whose publications appear bibliographies of more or less importance have no record of these; hence much valuable material is not accessible. This list contains those bibliographies found in the Congres sional set of the U. 8. Government documents in the University of Illinois library, the file being nearly complete from 1841 to date; Cong. 27, sess. L to date. The arrangement is alphabetical by spe cific subjects with frequent cross'references; each subject being followed by the author of the bibliography, title, date and number of pages.
